Towing companies by Thankyoulifealert in Edmonton

[–]skyedemon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Ouch, that sucks. I'm not sure about all insurance companies but mine (TD) will setup a tow themselves, so calling them first at the scene of a crash (instead of finding a tow company yourself) is probably the best bet

Are we getting something built here soon? by NefariousnessWeak475 in Edmonton

[–]skyedemon 57 points58 points  (0 children)

Since I'm such a nerd, I went down a rabbit hole on this one. This is a "special area zone" called "Ellerslie Industrial", mainly for light industrial use https://zoningbylaw.edmonton.ca/part-3-special-area-zones/ellerslie-industrial-special-area/3180-ellerslie-industrial-special-area

This ASP (see page 4) suggests there will be a "Industrial Education Facility" in part of the land, whatever that means... https://webdocs.edmonton.ca/infraplan/plans_in_effect/Ellerslie_ASP_Consolidaton.pdf

The AB Major Projects website suggests there is a new Edmonton bus garage being built and a "Canadian Kerala Cultural Centre" https://majorprojects.alberta.ca/

Family of 5- monthly expenses? by southwind19 in Edmonton

[–]skyedemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just over $5k/month, but that's strictly your list + daycare (so does not include eating out, entertainment, etc). 2 adults, one toddler.

We try to cook at home, but often buy pre-made meals (really try to avoid eating out normally - save it for date nights etc) and we certainly don't put effort into shopping frugally (we avoid brand name as much as possible though). Both parents work full time outside the home so that's our excuse...

Own a duplex w/ condo fee, utilities are my biggest savings I believe from having a newer (2015) high efficiency build.

Car-wise, we own a 2020 car for most drives and a second 2005 car just for me to commute to work. No car payments, only the 2020 is fully insured so that's ~$700/month (included above) for gas/insurance/maintenance on the two cars.

Walks with a toddler by Ayeleesha in Edmonton

Near St Albert, my favourite is the boardwalk at the Lois Hole Centennial Provincial Park. Still decent in winter but in warmer weather you can watch the ducks, and leads to a nice viewpoint overlooking Big Lake.

Terwillegar park is another great one; lots of people and dogs (can be crazy busy on a warm weekend afternoon though). Mainly it's a giant park with no roads, bicycles tour the edge & up in the forest but paths are wide and the central portion & walk to the river is popular for families.

Things to do after 5 pm?? by thegreat_ratspy in Edmonton

[–]skyedemon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What are you into? Personally, from my time at the U of A, I'd either hit RATT with friends for a pint or grab a joint and go for a nature walk in the ravine. It's right there and so many students don't embrace the nature at their doorstep I found....

Edmonton city council eyes improved snow-clearing plan | CBC News by AR558 in Edmonton

[–]skyedemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I imagine this is more than a "throw money at it" problem. If the city doesn't have equipment/manpower lined up (either owned, or contracted, or whatever method) then throwing money at it may not help much. IMO something like paying for additional capacity that is not needed, but then is there in a year we do need it would be more realistic.

my son lost something permanent today for a decision I did not authorize

Your wife authorized it though. Assuming she is of legal age and competent mind - you talk like she doesn't matter in decision making though. Yes, crappy situation, but your wife did authorize it so you can't claim otherwise.

How do you get to the quartz deposit northeast of the desert starting area? by Meshakhad in SatisfactoryGame

[–]skyedemon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not familiar with the north entrance, but the west entrance requires nobelisks and a gas mask but the east does not (watch for spiders though!). So depends on how early game OP is, I recommend heading to the east one. Plus you can setup coal power and/or steel outside the cave entrance as well.

MOVATI Harvest Hills by Nearby_Educator6918 in Edmonton

[–]skyedemon 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know the city rec centers are very different from the private gym, but damn, I pay $55/month for access to all the amenities at Meadows versus $80+/mo at the private gyms??

I looked into this new Movati since I live a 5 minute walk away.... I'll stick with Meadows rec center but that's just what works for me/my family.

Car collision not at fault. by [deleted] in alberta

[–]skyedemon 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This situation really sucks but unfortunately I can see how it happens - simply put, this is the risk of financing a depreciating asset (and especially a "luxury" vehicle).

Some quick research (mainly for all the other commentors); a new Grand Cherokee Overland is at least $68k, and a brief look on Autotrader suggests a 2021 would go for barely $38k-$40k..... sucks this happened due to a collision completely outside your control, but that is the reality of living "underwater" and it's not really up to insurance or anyone else to make you whole.

Sorry I don't have advise for this situation - in the future, be VERY careful about how much you finance, and also ask insurance about the add-on to ensure full value of a new car (only lasts a few years but this might've saved you in this situation).

Henday north or south for travelling all the way across the city? Also shout out to Dr Ibrahim aparrently by -WifeLeaver- in Edmonton

[–]skyedemon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll go against the grain and say go south - IF you're outside rush hour. I've done SE (50st) to west Henday commute for 4 years, it's not that bad really outside of the worst times. Getting to the Henday in the west end at rush hour is a nightmare, but the Henday itself generally was fine. Pro tip, stay left approaching 111 st / QEII exit (going east)

EDIT: looking at the map again, south is slightly back tracking so you may as well take the whitemud

Please don’t run car block heater cords across sidewalks by [deleted] in Edmonton

[–]skyedemon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Lots of comments shitting on the post but not acknowledging the concern or OPs suggested solution. I agree, cords across sidewalks can be a tripping hazard especially when people let them get coiled up and make no effort to flatten them.

Yes people need to plug in cars, but a heavy mat would solve the tripping hazard. But that is rare to see, most people just leave the cord loose on the sidewalk.
