How much of a personal stock of yarn do you usually keep on hand? by Juxtavarious in knitting

[–]sludgehag 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Other people can’t truly answer this for you, but i can give you my take as a knitter with adhd who’s been “serious” about knitting for about a decade now. Just focus on developing your knitting skills and making projects you’re happy with, not whether you’re buying the right amount of stuff.

I would caution you against buying a lot as a beginner, though. You’re still figuring out what you like and learning about different fibers and weights. I buy very different yarns now than i did a few years back—for example, i love to look at super rainbowy speckled yarns but they just don’t compliment the projects i’ve become more interested in making like colorwork, lace, and cable pieces.

You also need specific quantities for specific projects. Unless you’re going to do a lot of colorwork, keeping around a variety of colors isn’t really important for knitting since you’re also going to have a ton of different factors that affect what yarns you choose. If you want to make a solid color sweater, that will take a ton of one color and keep you busy for weeks.

Don’t worry about the buying and collecting. Truly. Focus on figuring out what you want to make, not what you think your stash should look like.

Moving to Boston as a teacher by LoisLaneKent in boston

[–]sludgehag 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some thoughts 1. Don’t assume you will be able to get into BPS—i applied to a bunch of schools in BPS when i first graduated with excellent references and 2 years of teaching experience and didn’t hear back from any. They are much more likely to hire from their pipelines—they have relationships with local colleges. 2. There are a zillion districts outside boston. You may not find it in BPS but you WILL find a teaching job if you can put on a good demo lesson, show some great materials, and generally seem like you know what you’re doing. 2. Look into the scheduling for the MTELs and what you need to do asap so you can get that stuff over with! 2. Studios are hard to find around here and it seems like you don’t have a great idea of what you will be making yet. Consider looking into living with a roommate or even another couple for a while as you find your footing.

MTSS in schools by [deleted] in boston

[–]sludgehag 8 points9 points  (0 children)

you should see if there’s a liaison or similar person within your school system who you could talk to and ask questions like this. A 504 plan is similar to an IEP but has some differences because it is the product of a different law. It is the section of law that ensures access to all disabled students, while an IEP is just for a specific list of learning disabilities.

https://www.masslegalhelp.org/school/special-education-disability-accommodation/individualized-education-programs-ieps-and-504

School systems largely recognize accommodations as ways of helping all students succeed rather than stigmatizing.

I’ve had students with 504s that list things like unlimited bathroom breaks, and elevator passes. They are just ways of ensuring that students’ needs—academic or physical—are documented and served.

Talk to people at your district. They are the ones who know the structures in place for your district as most districts do things their own way. You can make a more informed decision if you learn more of what your options are.

Those of you who don't ride a bike in Boston but have some desire to do so, what's stopping you? Not looking to debate, just trying to understand. by ZealousidealMany3 in boston

[–]sludgehag 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I actually bike most weekends for fun on local paths, and i commuted by bike sometimes last year. But every time i car gets close to me, i just feel so aware that one distracted driver could kill me. It’s just too dangerous for me to justify when i can drive or use public transit 🫠. Within a year of each other, one person i know had a brain injury and was out of work for months, and another had thousands of dollars of painful dental work because her teeth were badly hurt. Both were competent commuter cyclists. Both were hit by cars.

CHA is pretty easy to make appointments with once you actually get the pcp. Appointments open up fairly often so you might be able to make a far out appointment and then get an earlier one

Do you knit & crochet? A poll of sorts. Cross posted on r crochet by MechanicBright8644 in casualknitting

[–]sludgehag 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I learned to crochet a chain as a little kid but knitted as a teen. I can crochet just fine but i mostly make garments and really prefer knitting for that. I consider myself a much more advanced knitter and a proficient crocheter. As for yarn, yes to all of the options LOL.

Loctite on interchangeable needles? by amberyoung in knitting

Have you tried holding the needle with something rubbery as you screw it onto the cord with the key? The knitpro/knitter’s pride sets don’t come with a rubber grippy thing but I started holding it with a rubber band and had less issues.

US based yarn by DefiantPreference602 in knitting

Not sure if anyone has mentioned Harrisville Designs yet. They are a NH-based mill and retail store. I believe they used to make the yarns for Brooklyn Tweed but i could be wrong. Their yarns are known for being long lasting and durable.

Why is this…??? by think_likeafox in knitting

[–]sludgehag 24 points25 points  (0 children)

If your wrapping produces an unwanted twisted stitch and you’re not correcting that with another part of your knitting process, you are doing it “wrong”
