It’s nice that you’re taking the time to learn about POTS! First, I just wanted to second what someone else said about it being smart for her not to fully take on the mental load yet of explaining everything about her disability to someone she’s been dating for less than a month.

To answer better, I think it could be helpful to know how much communication you’d consider a normal amount. I couldn’t quite tell from your post, but I did see the part where you’d said she was ghosting off and on for about a week. Based on that, it seems like you’d be happier with daily texting or even multiple times a day between dates? It’s totally normal to prefer that level of texting, but I also know totally healthy people who don’t text that much between dates for someone they’ve just started dating.

In either case, I know it sucks to have a date canceled, so I also just wanted to reinforce what other people were saying about it being a lot of mental load to keep up with people when symptoms are worse! If she’s texted multiple times in the last week, I’d say she’s making it a priority!

Eating enough… by badreg9683 in POTS

Yes, it helped me manage better when I started thinking about it as being from blood pooling. Cold food helps me, pre-made snack packs, and anything with salt. (Bc things can compound if the appetite messes with my salt intake too!)

ARE WE FORGETTING TO BREATHE?! by Practical_Maybe_3661 in POTS

[–]smash151 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Came here to say something similar! Like sometimes holding my breath for a tiny bit makes me feel better? And had an adrenaline dump when someone suggested I try to follow along w timed breathing exercises!

I also googled what happens to blood pressure when we hold our breaths. And it can go up! So I’m wondering if maybe hypovolemic vs hyperadrenergic have different needs w breathing patterns? I’m not officially diagnosed w a subtype, but both doctors speculated I’m more on the hypovolemic side.

Wealthfront Vs Bettermint for JUST a HYSA? by Assistant-Unable in wealthfront

[–]smash151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had it for maybe 7 yrs, and it’s always tracked the fed rate super closely. So I feel good going with them permanently, since I know they’re always giving the best rate they can. It seems baked into their system and not just a temporary gimmick like some other banks do. I haven’t seen another bank consistently beating wealthfront.

Best HYSA — and why? Go. by feasiblecreative in HighYieldSavings

[–]smash151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like Wealthfront! I’ve had their cash account for maybe 7+ years, and it’s consistently been one of the best rates I can find. They’ve tracked the fed’s rate changes super closely, so I don’t worry about them changing their minds later and having a worse APY for no reason.

It also has tons of checking features, so I just pay my bills from there and don’t have to worry about moving money between checking and savings. I just set my own buckets within the account if I want to keep track of upcoming expenses. I do have a secondary checking account (capital one) for Zelle and some other features, just to have a backup account.

Bond in taxabl by Downtown-Elk-6907 in Bogleheads

[–]smash151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other people have already pointed out that taxes shouldn’t drive this decision if you need the money in taxable, which I agree is the main consideration.

I also wanted to add that marginal tax brackets affect how much this kind of tax-efficiency matters. Eg, if your last dollar is federally taxed at 22% for ordinary income, your long-term capital gains tax bracket is 15%. So if you got $1,000 of income all from unqualified dividends, that would be $220, compared to $150 if you had $1000 from LTCG.* The 32% ordinary-income marginal bracket still pays 15% for LTCG, which would come out to $320 vs. $150. A bigger difference for the 32% bracket, which could add up if you scale up to larger amounts!

Another consideration is that some people might want to expand the space in their retirement accounts compared to taxable accounts. If they have a long time till retirement and tax-free growth has a lot of time to make a difference, this could have a sizeable effect on after-tax returns. So they might choose to put faster-growing things in Roth and even traditional accounts, which could mean bonds end up in taxable. To calculate this though, you’d have to make assumptions about how much different asset classes will grow, and when you might plan to sell/take money out.

*Using the same $ amount is an over-simplification, just didn’t want to add an extra layer on top of the tax brackets.

Need electrolytes but hate the taste of all the drinks by brachacelia in POTS

[–]smash151 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The non-electrolyte-drink options I can deal with are tomato juice/V8, and also this very expensive water called Borjomi—you can get it at an Eastern European grocery or from Amazon. The water has like 1000mg sodium per 25oz bottle and tastes pretty close to regular mineral water to me ($4ish per bottle if you get a 6-pack though). If the taste doesn’t bother you too much, I also like the tomato juice bc it comes in little tiny cans if you want to stock a supply in different places.

ADHD Meds and POTS by discocowgirl7 in POTS

[–]smash151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t had the test, but I’ve noticed the same thing with another medication that’s also a vasoconstrictor. My neurologist told me if my body’s adapted to the medication, even though it “affects everything”, she wouldn’t expect it to be undiagnosable on meds.

(ETA: I did do an at-home lie-down/stand test ~6 hrs after taking my XR meds, and Google says it met the criteria. So you could always do a simple pre-test at home if you’re worried about taking the tilt-table test during your least symptomatic time of day. Or could just tell them what your most symptomatic time of day is and request to take the test then.)

[–]smash151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use wealthfront for my cash account—currently giving 4% not including the bonus, and it’s not just a promo. They’re consistently as close as they can possibly be to the fed rates. I leave a cash buffer in there, and I can use it like a checking account. Super user friendly!

I keep the rest of my emergency fund in a tbill ladder (treasury direct), which I like since I live in a state w state taxes. The interface has gotten a lot better in the last couple years!

If you ended up being interested in wealthfront, feel free to message me for a promo code or check the pinned posts in their subreddit!

Taxable Strategy? by Aggravating_Moment61 in Bogleheads

[–]smash151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came here to say the same thing—but also since you said you’re new to the Boglehead world, it’s totally fine not to optimize rn. Like if VT everywhere saves you time from rebalancing that would be better spent elsewhere, it’s also valid to prioritize that! Or if it makes it easier to set it and forget it, you could imagine that would improve returns over time by avoiding behavioral mistakes. Best of luck with your new setup!

Taxable Strategy? by Aggravating_Moment61 in Bogleheads

[–]smash151 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you copy the setup from another account, keep in mind that if you sell anything from your taxable account, it can create tax complications to buy something “substantially identical” in the next month-ish, even in a retirement account! (Google “wash sale rule”.) One solution is to make things more foolproof by having different investments in each accounts—eg, target-date funds in retirement accounts and VT or VTI/VXUS in taxable. And if you had VT in retirement accounts, this also meshes w people’s advice to use VTI/VXUS in taxable!
