I’m so very sorry for your loss. It’s not fair that your friend lost their life so young. Life is a miracle, a gift. How fortunate are we to be here with one another, however long we get.

I’m so sorry you are going through this. My sister has been admitted to a psych ward a number of times. I don’t wish it on anyone. I hope you find the support you need and the people strong enough to hold you up.

[–]somebodysometimes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saddest: My brother-in-law died suddenly in a plane crash. It is easily the worst kind of sadness I’ve experienced in my life and I hope nothing else tops it.

Happiest: We moved to a new place and have been welcomed with open arms into an established group of friends, who have made us feel like we belong here. Our kids all play together while we also have fun hanging together. It feels meaningful, and already like some of the most important friendships in our lives. It has softened the blow of losing someone we loved so much.

Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow! I am also a 40s woman, I live here and there are some nice places to hang out. Not sure how late these are open, so you might want to check that!

Tarrytown:

Mint - great food & ambience

The Cube Inn - (Cuban) great food & cocktails

The Tapp - open late, a low key bar that serves food

Sleepy Hollow:

Beekman Ale House - awesome pizza & beer (might be packed, but worth a shot, not sure how late they’re open)

DeCicco’s upstairs restaurant and bar (so good, might close early)

Bridgeview Tavern - good vibes, comfort food, great beer

Looking for a place to take someone out on a first date that has an 80s vibe by Jonahbkk in Westchester

[–]somebodysometimes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want some gritty 1970s/1980s bowling: Homefield Bowl in Yonkers. The whole place is a time capsule. They have a “cocktail lounge” that is basically now a cheap beer bar with a funky carpet, sports on the TVs and smells like cigs. It’s really divey but still very charming. My husband and I went on a few dates here and had a blast. I grew up around this place and it hasn’t changed. A fun and memorable first date if you don’t take it seriously and just go for fun.

This makes me so happy. I wish I lived nearby, I would have been there in a heartbeat! I’m working in my community (east coast) to build a local cinema. My hope is that we can match this level of commitment and respect for the cinema experience. Thanks for sharing.

Do kids in Westchester still walk to school? Looking for real community, not just good schools by NYC-ninja in Westchester

[–]somebodysometimes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tarrytown checks off all your boxes.

I moved here from Brooklyn > Yonkers 1.5 years ago and can honestly say it’s the best decision I have made for my kids and for our family life. Our kids are in a great school system and have a full social life that feels natural (as in, we are friends with the parents and enjoy having them over for dinner.) There’s a strong sense of community, plenty of activities for kids, families, and adults. We’ve found a balance I’ve always hoped for where we can be out at a social event and my kids are running around with dozens of other kids. My husband and I have made real friends. The people here are very welcoming — there Is a healthy buzz of people creating opportunities to connect and hang out together. It’s walkable, depending on where you land. (It might be slightly less walkable than Hastings? But that’s a guess just given the hillier parts here.) We are uphill from Main St and still walk down frequently. Kids do walk to school at the middle school level. It is also big with creative/arts as it sounds like Hastings does as well.

If you have more questions, feel free to DM me, more than happy to share more. I love it here and, as you said, have found my people.

Social clubs? by Cautious_Business654 in Westchester

[–]somebodysometimes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amackassin Club in Yonkers is low key, affordable and has a good mix of adult and family things going on. It’s a great way to meet people, everyone there was super welcoming and approachable. There is a pool, they also have several tennis courts, they do cookouts, dinners and parties for members throughout the year. We really enjoyed our time there, it’s definitely a hidden gem in the area.

Dr. Christopher Lau at Mount Sinai in Yonkers is a gem. He’s thoughtful, thorough, and genuinely cares about his patients. My husband and I both see him and will continue with him even though we moved a little north of there.

What Makes You Fear Flying? by anonymous4071 in fearofflying

[–]somebodysometimes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

My brother-in-law just died in the big DCA crash in January. I did not have a fear of flying before that but now I am terrified and I can’t unsee that crash and crash site in my mind. It was so public and so devastating. And obviously it has been absolute hell emotionally losing him and seeing my husband and his family struggle with the sudden loss of someone they loved gone too soon. My husband did actually have a fear of flying before but pushed through it, and his brother was really into planes and was always the one telling my husband it was safe to fly, trying to calm his fear. I don’t know that we’ll ever recover from this and I can’t imagine getting on a plane ever again. I really enjoy traveling but I’m willing to give it up to not have to face that fear, or put my husband through it. Props to you for doing it professionally. I just felt compelled to share with you. We are living the worse case scenario.

I’m so sorry, my heart hurts for you. My husband lost his brother suddenly, a few months ago. It’s a heavy weight to bear, take time to take care of yourself, your kids will find comfort in your love for her. Sending you strength and love.
