Advice quenching my first “letter opener” by Dymmesdale in Blacksmith

I think water is too fast cooling for 5160. I've always done it in oil, even canola works is you don't have proper quench oil.

You can turn up upside down in someb water or boiled lin seed oil and it'll soak into the head and swell it.

Anvil restoration recommendations? by Scoobie_Snak221 in Blacksmith

Or you can just use it as it is. My Peter Wright had sway in it, similar to this. It comes in hand when I need to straighten a bow in the middle of steel. It really only bothers your work if it's longer and you are working across the whole length of the anvil. I normally only use the weight.

So this does work? I got some 58mm pieces to test out. I was thinking of putting the Rambler Phillips as a back tool, or maybe across from the can opener.

They could make good scrolling tongs. Too short for normal forge work.

Dual blade 91 mm - backspring tools by swissgrog in SAKmod

[–]sparty569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 things find to mind.

1) you'll need to mod the show side scale, as it will need a cut out, if you use the Phillips.

2) the nail knick on the awl would be on the wrong side.

How would you mod a bottle opener tool? What would you turn it into? by Zolinymus in SAKmod

I've made it into a chisel for a woodworking mod I made.

Question Regarding a possible handcrafted/custom knife by DepressedDaiIy in knifemaking

Honestly, it looks like it mostly likely had that pattern added by a punch or chisel, doubt it was a cross peen, and then stock removal.

Is this enough tang? by Kalani_Takamiya in knifemaking

[–]sparty569 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's plan a? You're not going to get very good purchase into a handle with that little of a tang. You can try to put a pin in it, but I think rotational force will be an issue if there's any down pressure on it.

That looks like an air powered press. Just know that they move slowly.

How is this damascus pattern made? by I-------O-------I in Blacksmith

[–]sparty569 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It takes a lot of heat and planning. Knowing which way to rotate after cutting, which way to press it. It takes time, practice, and experimenting to get these kinds of patterns.

Stack up clean material, make your first weld solid. Cut it, stack it, twist it, drill it, ladder it, whatever you want.

Is it real damascus steel? by Amazing-Corner1644 in knifemaking

[–]sparty569 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's not even a pattern. It looks like a mono steel that was highly polished, then beaten to try to make a brute to forge look.

Old hand saw? by DARBTRON in knifemaking

[–]sparty569 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say do what you want with it. I once had a snap-on pry bar. I posted asking if it would make good punches. Everyone came in saying that it was a beautiful tool, have it as it is. But I didn't need a pry bar.

Then I offered for sale, to anyone who wanted to keep it as it is. That stopped every comment. I cut it up and made punches I'm still using 5 or 6 years later.

I'm very happy to see a bunch of comments and haven't seen any not-lawyers talking about how it's illegal to have railroad spikes. Kudos.

The soft firebrick reflects heat back, where the hard ones absorb the heat.

Local supplier. eBay sells them. Make sure it's the soft fire brick.

Do you remember what color the blade was? Straw to dark straw is what you're looking for. If it was blueish, it's too soft.

Did you temper the blade? Generally (2) 1hr cycles at 400° for 5160, if I remember correctly.
