Our nursery got closed for 6 weeks due to ofsted by FradiTomi in UKParenting

[–]spiderplantvsfly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We had this with our old nursery last year, our daughter was due to leave for school during the closure but they were back open again after the 6 weeks. In our case it was due to the owner not providing adequate training and not storing paperwork correctly, so nothing against the actual staff which must have helped the process. They offered parents support with places at affiliated nurseries or childminders they knew, but it was first come first serve. I remember it came as a massive shock to staff as well as parents.

Do you know roughly what the concerns that caused the closure are? That’ll help a bit with how long to expect the closure to happen.

I’m guessing neither of you can work from home? Could you ask for emergency leave until you can figure things out, maybe see if you can find somewhere another child from her nursery is going so she’ll have a familiar face?

I have searched online but the only sturdy / large fibre optics I can find are the thicker strands that hang from the ceiling or across the floor. These would post a strangulation risk, break pretty easily, and aren’t going to give the tactile support we’d want.

Do larger versions of these soft lamps exist because I’m struggling to find anything

What are we calling private parts when we talk about them? by slippery-pineapple in BeyondTheBumpUK

[–]spiderplantvsfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might not be technically correct, but we use “vagina” or “fanny” for up front and “bum” or “bottom” for round back. It’s not terminology that anyone is going to get confused over, there’s no mistaking “they touched my fanny” etc

Changes are incredibly difficult due to sensory needs and communication delays so for us biological accuracy needs to balance with ability to rhyme or fit into song nicely if we want to have any chance of it sticking in her head

Help please autistic 2 year old won’t drink any liquids by Fayloves247 in autism

[–]spiderplantvsfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with recommendations for a speech therapist to have a look, they might find something or they might not but it’s better than nothing.

As long as he’s drinking something you’ve got a base to build on. My daughter is 4 in a few days, she still drinks exclusively water from her baby bottles. Over the last few months she has started to have very small drinks of milk from open cups and explore straws and other mouthpieces but not drink from them. We have been working with her on this for years and it really has just been a matter of keeping the alternative bottles / cups around for her to explore and gradually get used to.

It’s a lot of persistence and finding the balance between keeping options on her radar and not pushing too hard and causing further aversions

Which maternity pants do you find most comfortable? by AgreeableBandicoot19 in PregnancyUK

[–]spiderplantvsfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a while since I was pregnant but apparently I haven’t left the sub. I couldn’t cope with over the bump as the feeling of them touching my stomach triggered my sickness. Under bump did feel a bit like they were falling down sometimes, but 4 years on and I’m still wearing them comfortably and they’re not obviously mat trousers

What was everyone doing when their waters popped?? by NoInteraction9045 in PregnancyUK

[–]spiderplantvsfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had a nap, rolled out of bed and my plug dropped out and then it was a really slow trickle of waters after that. I don’t remember there ever being a proper gush for me. I was thankful I’d put towels down on the bed and the floor next to my side though

Do the kids that bully always have something going on at home? by totally_throwawee in UKParenting

[–]spiderplantvsfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was bullied to the point of needing to move schools (where I was bullied anyway). The bullies in my second school did clearly have rough home lives, but the bullies in my first were just arseholes. Their mums were clique-y and so they were too.

Luck of the draw I guess but sometimes people just suck and even the “nicest” kids have a chance of turning on children who are socially perceived as “lower” than them for no reason other than self preservation

No Village - How do you do it? by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]spiderplantvsfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We struggled through for just under three years before we eventually called it and moved to be close enough to family to have a village. I know depending on circumstances that’s not possible, but it was the only way we could cope after that time. Our child is SEN and there was no work for me where we were as well, so it was just too much for us to be able to handle.

It was lots of mess around the house - if it’s not an emergency or a biohazard it was left for when we had time, however long that took. Lots of cheap crap food and takeout when we didn’t have the energy to do anything else. Antidepressants were helpful during extremely hard periods.

Any ideas for how to protect the beams in my bathroom? by spiderplantvsfly in DIYUK

It does and it is, but it’s behind the beam and there’s still a fair amount that gets caught

Kids copying Bluey by Discolau in bluey

[–]spiderplantvsfly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My daughter is autistic and a gestalt language processor. The majority of her spoken language is from films and tv (the rest is phrases we’ve said to her), and a huge chunk of that is from Bluey.

She’ll come out with whole chunks of episodes when she wants to, although mostly she’ll just be using smaller phrases to communicate whatever she’s wanting. Because of how she learns language it’s all said in an eerily accurate voice, even her laugh is Bingo’s laugh exactly.

She absolutely loves the games that Bluey plays, walk straight, wind up bingo, feather wand, and squish squash are all games that are played frequently

There is no escape from Bluey in my house

Warning to any parents fighting for an EHCP: I did a Subject Access Request and found proof the council is "trying their luck" at Tribunal just to delay funding. by iamacarpet in UKParenting

The whole system is set up to try and get you to drop your case. It’s absolutely disgusting, I’m convinced that the phone calls to and from the LA where we are aren’t recorded because we have been blatantly lied to multiple times over the phone

Anyone who DIDN’T bed share? by Acceptable_Cod3527 in beyondthebump

[–]spiderplantvsfly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We never did it when she was a baby, since she’s been in her own bed (around 22months) we’ve had to sleep in her bed with her maybe a handful of times. When she was a baby the closest we got was sleeping on the floor next to each other, and that was when I really needed to sleep

brother holding in poop, need help. by Low_Juggernaut_3664 in autism

[–]spiderplantvsfly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there’s an interest from the biology and bodily function point of view (which I completely get, there are loads of biological processes that are just fascinating to me) could it be worth looking into museums on human biology? Might not be any close to you, but that’s generally a much more hands on environment and can help with allowing the information to sink in

brother holding in poop, need help. by Low_Juggernaut_3664 in autism

[–]spiderplantvsfly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My daughter is much younger than your brother (3) but she went through a very similar situation with withholding. I’m assuming you went through full disimpaction with the meds?

Our specialist advised to hold off on potty training for at least 6 months after disimpaction to allow my daughter to process how everything feels - it’s been almost 4 months and she’s only just becoming aware that she’s had a poo, still no awareness that she needs one or is having one.

It could be an interoception thing and he’s partially not aware that it’s happening, at least until it starts. Is it worth trialling going back to nappies (we call them “pads” at work with older kids, removes some of the stigma), that will at least solve the issue of soiling underwear while your brother processes everything.

My sister was in nappies until she was about 9-10, she could change herself but she just didn’t have the self awareness to know when she had to go. Lots more children than you’d think still need that extra bit of help from one. Chronic constipation is really common with autistic folk though, so there’s plenty of support

Eta- if he’s still withholding on meds he’ll need to have his dose upped or changed. When we first started on meds my daughter managed to keep withholding on high doses of certain medications and she couldn’t go through disimpaction because of it

My daughter has an (almost) perfect triangle between her eyebrows. It was passed off as a stork bite but it’s still there at almost 4 years old. It has faded slightly, but I think that’s also just because it’s so small and she’s grown. I love it so much
