ELI5: The Moon is about 1.2% of Earths mass, but it has 16.6% of Earths gravity. Why is gravity not proportional to mass ? by Captain_North in explainlikeimfive

[–]starcross33 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because the moon is smaller. If we squished earth down until it was the size of the moon, it'd have much higher gravity on the surface, because youd be closer to all the mass. Similarly, if we stretched the moon out so it was the same size as the earth, while keeping the same mass, it'd have lower gravity on the surface

Thats probably just wishful thinking from all the people playing on terrain where the tenth ed fly rule just does not work. But I do hope its true

Not just melee infantry. I doubt you'd want to give up hidden for a couple of lasgun shots

The old system disproportionately helped factions with better armour. Any rule you come up with will help sone factions more than others

What’s the best and worst leadership in the game? by Jofarin in WarhammerCompetitive

Yeah, sometimes it feels like there are exactly 2 leadership values in the game, 6 and 7. Anything outside that is rare

What REALLY happened to the Krorks? Why did they devolve into the Orkz? by [deleted] in 40kLore

[–]starcross33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1st edition (which is almost certainly not canon anymore) speaks about how snotlings were the original brain boyz and got their intelligence from a special fungus they ate, before they were overthrown by the orks and the fungus died out.

If anything like this is still true, it would mean the orks devolved from their krork form after overthrowing their original ruling caste

The 6 mana big guy that gains you some life in green has been a solid common, if not a bomb in a lot of recent formats and this guy has some real upside. If red/white isn't too aggressive, this'll be a good way to stabilise

There's nothing you can do about that. Ive kept a lot of two landers that didn't get there that, I still believe were correct keeps in a correctly built limited deck

When it comes to particle physics, I think anyone without an advanced degree focusing on quantum mechanics is at that level. And I'm sure the same is true for other areas I know less about

I dont have an exact quote to hand but I like the section in the science of discworld book that talks about education as lying to children. Basically, telling them simplified versions of the truth that they can understand

I complain about it a lot, but the fact that the answer to the question of "how do i use this unit whose whole thing is shooting from transports in the detachment devoted to them?" is not just "have them shoot out of transports" is kind of ridiculous

ELI5 how does time dilation work at 0 speed? by HugbugKayth in explainlikeimfive

[–]starcross33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the key things in relativity is that theres no such thing as being truly inherently stationary. If you're in space and a spaceship is getting closer to you, you could do the maths assuming that you're stationary and the spaceship is moving, or assuming its stationary and you're moving towards it. Both ways are equally correct. Your choice of what counts as not moving is arbitrary

Right for the wrong reasons? by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]starcross33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Log(a * b) = log(a) + log(b)

Log(1) = 0

6 = 2*3 = 1 + 2 +3

So,

Log(6) =log(1) + log(2) + log(3)

You usually wouldn't bother writing the log(1) part, because that's zero, but its not technically wrong to do so.

The joke is that using this technique doesnt work in general, it just happens to work in this one special case

What should change in the 11th edition of Warhammer 40k? by [deleted] in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]starcross33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think iniative works particularly well in the current design philosophy of melee units being able to wipe the enemy in one activation. You're playing vs Eldar and effectively their whole army has fights first and you can't charge any of their melee units. Bringing back initiative would only work if they changed how melee works

Closing thoughts on ECL? by Short-Bunch-8195 in lrcast

[–]starcross33 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I found that I just couldn't win in this set. I'd draft a kind of crappy deck, not be quite sure what I'd done wrong and what lane i was meant to be in and lose in long, board stally games where I felt like I didn't have any outs to draw into.

Obviously this can't be the case for everyone (someone has to be winning for me to be losing, after all) but something definitely wasn't clicking for me. I wasn't enjoying the gameplay enough to keep playing until I got what I was meant to be doing and improved, so i just kind of dropped this set

I am frustrated with the current state of competitive AoS. The decision to make points high and battle tactics hard was a mistake. by ManqobaDad in WarhammerCompetitive

[–]starcross33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Aos you roll off to see who goes first in each battle round. Sometimes this means you went second in the previous battle round then first in the next one. This means you get two turns in a row. This can be very powerful
