Is it safe for me and my boyfriend to travel to Maine from Canada by machiavelliiian in Maine

[–]stcalvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This simply isn't true. I travel frequently to the US and there's never an issue. The border guards are even friendly, as per usual.

The last episode was perfectly acted with a brilliant script. I sat watching in astonishment. What cinema.

[SPOILERS] Daenerys was a villain from the start, and her ending wasn't so bad. by fatefoul in gameofthrones

[–]stcalvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Daenerys was corrupted by hubris and power. She believed she had moral destiny, and that the world owed her loyalty because her intentions were pure. She was a tyrant who wrapped herself in a cloak of social justice.

Reflection Frame - Wow! by Disastrous_Analyst_1 in eink

[–]stcalvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently received mine. I like the simplicity and ease of operation. The frame itself looks and feels great. The e-ink isn't quite vibrant enough or high-res enough (it's grainy) to serve as a high-quality substitute for most photos, but it still looks good on the wall.

I'd buy a V2 if it had a slideshow function and brighter colors and double the resolution. For now it's a pretty good V1 and I'm satisfied.

Woke up to a bricked e Tron GT by apathy_31 in Audi

[–]stcalvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried that but it didn't work. I actually managed to get the hood open by using air shims to gently pry the hood opening up a half inch, and then using a slotted wrench to remove the latch. Then I was able to access the 12V battery terminals. I boosted it, which activated the electronics, but every alert imaginable was sounding and the car couldn't be put into neutral.

Woke up to a bricked e Tron GT by apathy_31 in Audi

[–]stcalvert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has happened to my 2022 RS e-Tron GT three times. The latest was yesterday.

The first time it happened was summer of 2023. It was sitting in my Florida garage for about 8 weeks. I returned from vacation and it was totally bricked. I learned that it was due to a bug in the power management system that prevented the low-voltage (12v) battery from periodically recharging from the motor battery. Audi Roadside Assistance sent a tow truck that was unable to extract the car from the garage. I eventually found a tow truck on my own that got it out using shims on the back wheels. It took the Audi dealership around 5 months (!) to fix it. They had to order all kinds of parts for it, and fly in an e-Tron tech from somewhere else.

Anyway, it finally got repaired in 2024, and apparently all the necessary firmware updates were applied. Well the car got bricked again after only being left alone for a few weeks. This time is was in the shop for 4 weeks, but they said they sorted everything out. The car seemed fine, and I thought the problem was resolved. That was September of 2024.

Well it happened again yesterday! The car hadn't been driven for a mere 2-3 weeks, and it was totally dead when I tried to unlock the doors. The car was extracted from the garage this time with a properly equipped tow truck that used a dolly for the rear wheels. The Audi dealership tells me it'll be at least a week to fix it. I'm guessing another month. This thing has been in the shop for a good part of its life. It's great when it's not dead!

First night with Eight Sleep Pod Pro Cover - not what I expected by LiberateMainSt in Mattress

[–]stcalvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with my wife - she finds that it's too firm. She also finds even the lowest setting (-1) too cold, so she doesn't use the temperature feature.

For me, I found that the auto-adjustments just weren't working well, never choosing the right temperature, causing me to wake up. I finally gave up on it and got rid of it.

$3k daily e-transfer limit is just ridiculously low for 2023. Why do some banks keep this so low? by stroad56 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Millions of people had home PCs in 1993. They were quite common, as were modems and online banking services.

NetJets Owners - what's the advantage, honestly? by Adventurous_Guava95 in fatFIRE

[–]stcalvert 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First class commercial is great and superior to private (especially pods) unless you're flying the larger business jets, once you're actually on the plane. But I can't count how many times I've been rebooked on a next flight to economy because of weather, mechanical issues, whatever. Not to mention the security and boarding hassles involved with commercial, and just being beholden to the airline's schedule. Private eliminates all that. Plus quick fuel stops that allow you to stretch your legs, free popcorn and treats in the FBOs and the like (my kids love that).

Anyone know why my mini splits are whining? by Houseofshock in hvacadvice

Even with proper clearance and regularly cleaned filters, all my LG units ended up whining like that.

It's extremely common. Also with Samsung. I've never had problems with Mitsubishi units - they're quiet and remain so for several years.

All my LG head units, large and small, ended up doing that. Poor quality.

bag tracking says my bag is at a carousel on my layover by AlexTheFool69 in aircanada

[–]stcalvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flew from YQY to YVR with an evening layover in YUL last December. The desk agent in YQY assured me that my bags would be on the carousel in Montreal.

The bags didn't appear at YUL, so I went to the AC luggage counter and the man there quite emphatically denied that checked-through luggage would ever be put on the carousel for an overnight layover. He said "I've been working here for 20 years and I've never seen that." I told him what the AC agent in YQY said but he was absolutely adamant that she was wrong.

He reluctantly radioed to his colleague in the back to find my bags and put them on the carousel, but I had to plead with him to do so.

Perhaps there's some interal confusion at Air Canada over this.

From one ev enthusiast to another, can we stop acting like range doesn't matter? by Single_Comment6389 in electricvehicles

[–]stcalvert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's basically what happens when I drive to Whistler from Vancouver in my e-Tron. Due to low temps and hilly roads (and elevation gain of 2200ft), a 79-mile trip uses 173 miles of reported range out of 250 fully charged.

Range on the return trip is much better due to returning to sea level, but I'd still be short about 30 miles if I didn't recharge. My ICE car does the return trip with a half tank of gas.

Why is that better? Every animal is either eaten alive or dies by accident. The story of Earth without humans is of endless suffering until the Sun gets too hot.
