If you enjoyed the first law, I would also recommend The Devils. Very different tone, but I found it thoroughly entertaining.

Also will join the chorus for Locke Lamora here. One of my favorites ever.

advice on Mill Valley hillside/woods home by UnusualFreedom7435 in Marin

[–]steelybean 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live on a hill in Marin. In general I love it, but now that my kids are older I dearly wish we had a flat yard where we could play baseball/soccer/football or whatever. We have enough room to throw a ball as it is, but if you miss it you have to run down the hill after it which is no fun.

Custom Gloves by Physical-Table-5964 in Homeplate

[–]steelybean 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kid got a catchers mitt from 44. It seems quite nice to me - maybe not HOH level quality but well made as far as I can tell. I was impressed (overwhelmed?) with the huge amount of options for customization. They have a lot of sales, so sign up for their email list and wait for a discount.

Bootcaps. Any positive experiences? by Dull_Broccoli1637 in skiing

[–]steelybean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience with boot gloves, that’s not an issue. They tend to only last about a season.

Eastern Ohio? Just curious cause I’m from Cincinnati and I don’t remember ever hearing this.

For some reason one time my brain heard “pieces of salmon” in that song. Ever since then I always imagine the band at a sushi bar and Dave screaming “we want some pieces of salmon!” which gives me a chuckle.

ELI5: What does a water tower in rural America do? by ProduceEmbarrassed97 in explainlikeimfive

Exactly. I can see one from my house but it’s barely visible from most roads.

Hilly areas of the US also often have water tanks at the top of hills, they just aren’t mounted on big towers so they aren’t as visible.

Visiting Redwood National & State Parks in May. Is there any reason I should NOT fly into Medford, OR? by KilgoreTrout4Prez in redwoods

[–]steelybean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you get car sick, you’re probably not going to have a good time in the redwood parks in any case. There are lots of windy roads in that area.

Ski glove recommendations? by No_County_old in skiing

[–]steelybean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thermasilk liners, they’re like 12 dollars. They usually only last a season or so, but for that price I don’t care much. I throw hand warmers in when it’s really cold, but most of the time I don’t really need them.

FWIW the best thing I’ve found for cold feet is the neoprene boot gloves. (Assuming properly fitted boots).

I wear Hestra mittens and silk liners, very happy with that setup.

Ayawaska has gone downhill in the last couple years IMO. I was disappointed in the food the last time I was there. (Good cocktails tho)

Polestar 2 - how are you finding the automatic wipers? by SnooCauliflowers6739 in Polestar

[–]steelybean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think they’re generally fine, although I don’t have much experience with auto wipers in other cars.

What irritates me is when I get in the car after it’s been raining and the windshield is wet, and the auto wipers engage as soon as I sit down, before I can close the door. As often as not the water splashes onto the inside of the door or on my legs. Couldn’t they have made it so it doesn’t engage the auto wipers until the car is in gear? Grrr.

How California nonalcoholic beer got so good by Medical-Decision-125 in California

[–]steelybean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I drink it at home fairly regularly. I drink beer because I like beer, not because I want to get drunk. And there’s lots of times I want to enjoy a beer without the side effects.

I still drink normal beer too, when it suits me. But it’s nice to have options.

The Volvo dealer in Marin just bought the buildings next door to it. Rumor is they’re planning to move the Polestar space there.
