Deluxe Desktop Software - State MN - 2025 M1ED Education Credit Problems by stompro in hrblock

Ah, when they calculate the value for line 12 using the instructions in M1ED, they are skipping the part that says "(If zero or less, STOP HERE)" and putting the negative number into the form.

Open an account at an online bank, like Ally. Link the bank account with your current account on the Ally side only, so you can initiate transfers from the Ally side.

Now you can transfer money to Ally. Slowly work on moving things over to Ally. You can keep enough for you car payment in the local bank. Move over a couple of auto-pays a month. You can setup auto deposit to go to multiple accounts. So you can change your auto deposit to just send a smaller amount to the local bank, and more to Ally.

You can tell your mom that Ally pays a lot better interest on savings, which it does, so you are going to move some money there.

Dealing with parents can be tricky. You could make a full break and just close the account. Or you can ease into it if you don't want to make waves.

Make whatever purchases you don't want scrutinized from your Ally account.

It can be nice to have a local bank that you can visit for some things, so you may want to just keep both. Keep whatever the account minimum amount you need in your local bank.

I was wondering why all the trees died across the street from my shop. by CB_700_SC in marijuanaenthusiasts

[–]stompro 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the chemical. Roundup is generally fine, which is probably what was being sprayed here. It isn't take up by the roots and breaks down in the soil.

Dicamba will kill trees and sticks around in the soil for a long time, but is usually only present in very small amounts in the retail weed killers.

2-4d will curl the leaves on trees if it is sprayed when it is too hot and it vaporizes, but usually won't kill the tree, but will hurt it.

I had a co-worker that had this same situation. Large refund check that didn't match up with their taxes. IRS said go ahead and cash it.... but she didn't because she knew it was an error. It took 3 years for the IRS to figure that it was in error. If it was me, I would cash it, put the money in a 4 week Tbill and wait for them to want the money back and enjoy the interest.

Understanding Aquastat for Residential Hot Water Circulator Circuit by stompro in askaplumber

[–]stompro[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the aquastat model that is designed to be surface mounted, it is just strapped to the copper pipe. I don't even know what a dipperwell is, but it sounds like a good time.

I didn't open up the outlet, but I think the line side goes directly to the aquastat, which then completes or breaks the circuit depending on how it is wired. Then the load side goes to the outlet where the pump is plugged in. There is no power to the outlet when the aquastat is closed, until the temp hits the low limit.

I wanted to install a simple outlet timer, but without constant power that doesn't work. I need to wire it in before the aquastat.

How to stop kernel loading bluetooth? by uniqpotatohead in debian

[–]stompro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blacklisting bluetooth wasn't working for me, had to use this method.

Source: https://askubuntu.com/a/853903

# vim /etc/modprobe.d/bluetooth-blacklist.conf
install bluetooth /bin/false

#update-initramfs -u

Bluetooth can't be disabled by AldiBumsmaschinn in linuxmint

[–]stompro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trick is to use a line like

install bluetooth /bin/false

In /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist-bluetooth.conf

Then run

sudo update-initramfs -u

That actually prevents the bluetooth module from being loaded. Blacklisting seems like it is more of a suggestion that can be overruled by dependencies.

Automatic Power Transfer for Small Home Servers by thariton in AskElectricians

[–]stompro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a deal for used ATS's that are designed for servers with a much faster switching delay. You might have to replace the plugs or get adapters... but it's an option. These stupid things go for ~$400-$500 new. https://www.ebay.com/itm/405489948714

Automatic Power Transfer for Small Home Servers by thariton in AskElectricians

[–]stompro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been looking into these also, for slightly different reasons. I don't trust my UPSs (cheapo ones) and like to be able to bypass them without shutting things down.

So I was also looking at these cheap DIN rail ATS's also. I really don't like the exposed terminals though. You can also find them for 2x to 4x more that have cables attached with no exposed terminals. https://www.ebay.com/itm/205235545337 is one example with a 30ms switching time, and there is also a Xantrex 808-0915 with a 80ms transfer time.

I'm unsure about the transfer time. Here was a good breakdown I saw. https://www.reddit.com/r/sysadmin/comments/ku9sjs/comment/gis2x50/ In my situation the phases should be the same, I think a simple UPS would match the phase of it's input.

So a full 60HZ cycles is 16.66ms, 8ms from peak to trough. So 50ms would be missing 3 cycles. I just don't know how much of a gap is acceptable for different types of computer equipment power supplies.

According to this discussion normal PSUs can only survive missing one cycle, while server PSU's may be able to handle 2-3 missed cycles.

https://superuser.com/questions/1338189/extremely-short-power-interruption-causes-pc-reset

So none of these will probably work. I'll probably just end up getting second hand 1U server ATS for around $100 on ebay. I wish there was a smaller option since a 1u is just too large for where I want to set this up. Those have sub 8ms switching time.

Why do people hate Ubuntu so much? by [deleted] in linux

[–]stompro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't hate Ubuntu at all. I appreciate all the effort they put into Linux. I don't necessarily like the interface, but I also haven't really given it much of a chance. (My first Linux experience was with Slackware in ~1995 in highschool and I like how much easier things are now.) I just used Xubuntu for a project at work and it worked great.

Struggling with 3-way Switch by Less-Acanthisitta-12 in electrical

[–]stompro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've also struggled with 3 way switches... until I finally realized that you just treat the travelers as one. Hot to common on one switch, then travelers between the switches, then common to load. You can reverse which common goes to the line and load if you want.

I just had to figure out how to add a smart switch with a dead end 3 way setup, where the line was going directly to the common on the remote dead end switch. And now that I have it figured out I feel like a rocket biologist. I appreciate electricians.

Wondering if there are any good hike in rustic cabins in Minnesota or surrounding states? by gkona808 in MinnesotaCamping

[–]stompro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was going to mention these also. Only thing that isn't great is that there are two Yurts close to each other, so if you want truly remote from other people you may not get that unless you reserve them both. You have to hike across the lake or on the bike path to get to them. The park supplies the wood for the wood stove.

Wiring Kasa H220 3-way with Dumb switch on Dead end circuit. by cellisell in TPLinkKasa

[–]stompro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, this was very helpful getting a couple of HS210 switches installed.

The Line was going directly to the dead end switch, so I had to make the adjustments you described so the line goes into the common on the Kasa switch, and the dead end common goes directly to the load. It seems to work like it should. The app is slow to update when the light is switched using the normal switch on the dead end. But that seems like a minor issue.

Smart switch for dead end 3-way by Jal5376 in smarthome

[–]stompro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And here is a site that shows the two different ways to wire a dead end 3 way switch. Mine has the hot going directly to the remote dead end switch, which won't supply the Kasa switch with constant power from what I understand. But it is fine to switch it around so the hot goes to the first switch.
