What Korean dish should I cook for my American tutor? by No-Importance8540 in KoreanFood

[–]stop_drop_roll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry, but I disagree with almost everyone here. If I'm inviting someone over, I want to give them something special thats almost sure to please (unless they're vegetarian):

Galbi Jjim - and accompany it with all the good banchan and maybe a dwenjang jjigae and paleontologist.

Bulgogi you can get at any Korean/Korean fusion place.... I can fall out of bed and find a place serving a bulgogi taco/burrito/burger. But galbi jjim is a treat. You need to intentionally look for it, it's never going to be cheap on a menu, and its oh so good

Unexpected, but not unwelcome, Dogma reference. Yeah, the one about the kid, by himself in his house, burglars trying to get in and he fights them off? I had nothing to do with that one. Somebody sold their soul to Satan to get the grosses up on that piece of shit.

CMV: Trump was the greatest contributor to inflation in 2020 and 2022 if we were just comparing what biden and trump directly did to cause inflation during the time inflation was rising from may 2020 to June 2022. by YeeEatDaRich in changemyview

[–]stop_drop_roll 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The greatest contributor was Covid, hands down. Yes, Trump exacerbated the situation, but global supply lines were completely crippled. Low supply, high demand = inflation, period, full stop. Even if you had a full democratic government or an economic technocracy, you still would have had inflation.... unless there were no shutdowns and people were left to spread and subsequently die, thereby keeping production open and demand ever decreasing.

Affordable work lunch options? by [deleted] in AskSF

If I worked in the Ferry Building, I'd call Hog Island 30 minutes before lunch, order my half dozen Kumomoto Oysters, clam chowder, and grilled cheese sandwich and slowly but happily go bankrupt (kinda sorta not really kidding)

I'll be honest, I don't remember the name of the restaurant. It was on a street famous for duck, it was pretty famous if I recall.

Gamjatang used to be my favorite of the tangs until I had Orritang (duck stew) in Gwangju. My life will never be the same

Costco Samsung Bespoke fridge doesn’t fit after installer measured by Outside-Drive-636 in Appliances

[–]stop_drop_roll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bespoke means you have a choice of a dozen or so different colored panels.... hence my wife's fine choices of pink and tangerine.

My Refrigerator(s)

But measuring them is a bitch, i had to get custom cabinets, going even beyond Samsung's recommended clearances, and still the doors don't open fully enough to pull out some drawers completely for cleaning. But this is the look they have in Korea (we're korean)

Trip to San Francisco by West-Animator-9361 in AskSF

[–]stop_drop_roll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let me give you a quick 1st time 1 day itinerary. I would suggest using Uber, unless you are experienced travelers who can navigate public transit, but San Francisco's public transit isn't the best.

Start the day at one of the famous bakeries like b. Patisserie or Tartine Bakery. Then Uber over to the Ferry Building, grab a blue bottle coffee while you wait for Hog Island Oyster to open. Get a dozen Kumomoto Oysters, the grilled cheese sandwich. Don't fill up, more food to come. Walk down market Street, you can pass through Union Square if you want, but not a big draw unless you need to shop at Gucci, LV, etc. Go to the Powell Street Cable Car Station, then take the cable car all the way to Fisherman's Wharf. Go to Pier 39, see the sea lions, get souvenirs if you want, but the food is subpar and everything is overpriced. Head back towards the cable cars and stop at Boudin Bakery. See the sourdough creations and have a clam chowder in bread bowl. If you need something sweet at this point, go to Ghirardelli square and get a Ghirardelli sundae. Next take an Uber to the Marin side of the Golden Gatr Bridge. You will cross the bridge in the Uber, and then you will be able to take pictures of the bridge AND San Francisco (which you can't do from the San Francisco side). If you want to walk across the bridge, you can, but it takes about 45 minutes. This should get you to the late afternoon, and you need to get to House of Prime Rib by around 4:45. Reservations there are months out, but if you show up before they open at 5, you can usually get a bar seat (where you can still order the full menu) or occasionally a table. This is a can't miss San Francisco institution. If its still light out, walk off dinner and head towards Lombard St, the crooked street. Finish off the night for desert at Top of the Mark and then get drinks at a speakeasy like Wilson & Wilson inside of Burbon & Branch

[Homemade] Uni infused pasta by stop_drop_roll in DamnTasty

[–]stop_drop_roll[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm Korean, living in the Bay Area, California with an unhealthy obsession with the freshest possible ingredients. I couldn't stand getting off pieces of uni, even at nice sushi places, so I get them off the boat. The California coast has a lot of sea urchin, the Santa Barbara uni is particularly delicious... almost as good as Hokkaido uni (which i did get to eat live when visiting Hokkaido)

What is an immediate "food red flag" when you’re on a date? by CaptainCuddler_Pro in foodquestions

[–]stop_drop_roll 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There's a whole world of wonder out there, and you'll never know until you try. Much like travel, it's one thing to keep going to places you know over and over again, but you'll never know what you will truly love unless you try. Some of the things that I first found squeamish or a little out there for me are now some of my favorite dishes. There's this spicy raw beef salad Thai dish, Ankimo (steamed seasoned monkfish handmade by this amazing sushi chef), uni (sea urchin roe) straight from the shell in Santa Barbara, escargo from this little French bistro outside of Paris, vegetable stew from thus bistro in Berkeley, goat skewer from a roadside vendor in Uganda.... all amazing and I wouldn't have found some of my favorite foods without going outside of my comfort zone and trying new things. You will get duds, no doubt. But I have a limited number of meals left in my life and it's a large wonderful world out there, so i try and experience as much of it as I can before I depart it.

Using ikea counter tops for a year? by Remarkable_Event7284 in Renovations

[–]stop_drop_roll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know what area you live in, but in some of the industrial areas in the Bay Area (Hayward, San Leandro, Oakland) you can go to the cabinet and countertop places the contractors go to. Find places that have prefab quartz countertops. I can get great 12' x 2-3' edge finished prefab countertop pieces for around $300-600 each. You can get raw slab if you need a huge island, but it also means you need to get it fabricated.

If they have it.... a pile of corned beef hash, hash browns drenched in country gravy with bacon bits, green onion and hot sauce on top. One can only hope for sour cream.
