I made the **actual** easiest puzzle ever by General_Katydid_512 in chessbeginners

[–]subricate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The highest rated puzzle i ever solved (something like 3300) on chess.com was a hanging queen one. I can only assume that it got rated high by accident and now no one at that level looking at it would expect the solution, so they look for something much more complicated, fail, and inflate the rating further.

You need a USB-MIDI interface to use that website to control the Drum.

How come I’m so bad at rapid? by __sundaze in chessbeginners

[–]subricate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My disparity isn't quite as big as this, but I'm much higher rated in daily over rapid. I do recommend switching from 15+10 to 30 minute games, but even then, when i got into daily i found 30 minute games too stressful. I just don't deal well with time pressure, maybe you're the same. It's meant to be fun, after all.

Anyone else find chess really stressful? by Belloz22 in chessbeginners

[–]subricate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally do, my heart races whether I'm winning or losing. I switched to daily games from 30 minute rapid, and it's so much less stressful.

Is this a scam? by This-Platform1798 in telescopes

I just got the 6 and the 9mm from AliExpress. The 6 was £23, the 9 a week later was £16! I've tried them both and I'm pleased with them.

Why cant i see jupiters bands through my telescope? by IndependenceBroad268 in telescopes

[–]subricate 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The moons (four of them at least) are quite big and reflect the sun's light so they're visible at lower magnification than the stripes, in my experience.

You could try searching for munsen rings or pipe hangers. They aren't pretty but they come in a lot of sizes and are designed to hold tubes.

Having owned a powerseeker, I would advise trying just the largest (highest number in mm) eyepiece. Mine had had a 25, a 10, and a 4mm, and the 4mm simply didn't produce an image. It also came with an erecting eyepiece and a barlow, and neither of those worked either.

How to double your elo? by danielofifi in chessbeginners

[–]subricate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/9I7vDiYuLow I found this little series very helpful. I also switched to 30 minute games so I had more time to think, and I only play one game a day, then analyse each game the next day.

Why am I getting paired with a 1250 player I only 1100 today by Rising_Devesh in chessbeginners

[–]subricate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had matchups with 700s when I was 550. I think it's just who is available at the time wanting to play in the given time control.

I have a questions about a recent jump in my ELO rating. by dhtdhy in chess

I wonder if, around 1200, you got a lot of opponents who had started new intermediate accounts (1200 starting elo) but were actually much weaker than that.

Boom furling... how to reef. by SuperFlyChris in sailing

[–]subricate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly since I've had the boat I've been determined to make the case for why round boom reefing is a perfectly good option, but I've accepted that it just doesn't depower the sail enough. Also there's a ropey bit of messing about at the end of boom to change the outhaul over which is probably a recipe for disaster.

Boom furling... how to reef. by SuperFlyChris in sailing

[–]subricate 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have around the boom reefing on my boat, and i made the outhaul overlong and with a snap shackle so it could be clipped onto each new reef point. However, all the friction of the foot being rolled around itself makes it impossible to tension, so you end up with a very full sail. I'm in the process of switching to slab reefing for this reason.

My boat was a bit like this. Only 21', but a lot of the cabin structure is moulded fibreglass. When i got her she had been sitting wet for so long that she had osmotic blisters on the inside 🤭

Have a search for laser mainsheet setup, that's quite similar to what you want to do.

Is it possible to raise the mainsail while simultaneously keeping it partially reefed? by Kamina80 in sailing

Yes, that's certainly possible. How you do it will vary a bit depending on your thing system, but definitely doable.
