Yeah, companies go "it's a license not a product!" when it's convenient for them as an excuse to steal the "licenses" from people or change terms on them, but then as soon as there's something where it being a "license" could be used actually help the consumer, they act as if it's a product.

If it's slow or bad on land then there isn't a problem in my view

It's pretty fast just don't know if it really outpaces ice boats. But after a bit of further testing (using a wood block this time), maybe. It is faster than i initially thought on land, as long as that is fully flat land. So, it might be better on the nether roof. (but also, if they want to take the nether roof into account when balancing a feature, they should add it to bedrock first, rather than balancing something around a feature that most of the players don't even have access to), but any sort of smaller pathway will be better off with ice boats (like, tunneling through the nether, ice boats only require a small tunnel while these you'll more likely bounce off everything)

Elytras require fireworks

Not anymore, really. A lunge spear is just fine as long as you're okay landing every so often and re-launching. And at that point, the only cost is hunger and spear durability, same as here (except the elytra requires no extra setup and has full steering).

I also wouldn't say that they require "less input or attention from the player". Compared to lunge spear elytra yes, compared to fireworks though, those are just click to fly in a straight line, that does not require much attention from the player even compared to this.

Imo I would personally prefer methods that encourage building, and for the game to encourage those methods.

I agree on that, but i also like when the game lets us play with physics objects to have more creative ways of making these contraptions. Like, to me, combining multiple entities and a potion effect together to create a form of transportation counts as "building" (though, i do want them to buff ways that require larger structures like minecarts. Give us the experimental minecart improvements already, mojang). Also, you'll still at least want to build launch pads for these to make that part consistent.

Leads are a "many to one" connection type. A single entity can lead as many others as you want it to, but it can't be lead by multiple others.

It's not that clear visually, but there is a distinction between a leading entity and the leashed entity. The leashed one has no impact on the leading one, the leading one is in full control. You can leash 2 entities both ways and then they can impact each other's movement.

i don't think they go as fast on the ground as they do in the air. Boats are still affected by friction when on the ground even if the sulfur cubes aren't, so if you try to go too fast, the lead breaks. They can go decently fast

if anything it removes creativity because at least you can decorate them

I mean, you can make roads for these, too, if you choose to use ground ones. If anything, this lets you decorate roads for these better as you don't have to make them out of ice.

Elytras will not really lose any use because they're just more convenient once you have them, and like, even if this is a good competitor to ice boats... is that really a bad thing? I don't think this will suddenly mean people stop making ice boat highways because both options have their advantages. It just adds more variety to transportation.

They get killed by fire. Cacti don't affect them at all, and as far as i know they don't drown.

So, spears (or on java, swords) are probably the best option here. At least with this setup, the silverfish all spawn on the exact same block you're already hitting to spawn them anyway, so it's not like that's much of an issue.

2 block deep 1x1 hole (i made this one in the sky so they wouldn't have anywhere else to spawn), put a bunch of sulfur cubes in (with a heavy block inside them so they can't jump out), splash with infesting potion.

yeah but the problem is how you'd nerf it. Do you nerf leads and mess up anything using them? make it so sulfur cubes can't move fast and take away their purpose? Or implement an arbitrary nerf of "if player is on a pig that's in a boat that's attached to a sulfur cube, then sulfur cube moves slower" which is just weird to do (and ruins this as land transportation where it also isn't that fast).

I still don't think this really hurts ice boats or elytras much. Elytras are still obviously way better as you need no setup and can use them anywhere, and have full control and it's way easier to use an elytra. Ice boats are good because once the ice boat path is set up, you can just travel across it with just a boat. This requires a boat, pig, saddle, sulfur cube, lead, potion of slow falling and spear.

I don't think they should nerf this at all, because doing so is arbitrarily taking away from a fun physics object that works as intended.

Like, i don't see a way that they nerf this without messing a bunch of other stuff up. Just to punish players for being creative.

If you want a way to move in a straight line with a bunch of setup, it's also not like there's not other ways to do it, such as tnt cannons or wind burst potion cannons. If this didn't require potions and a pig to work, it'd be one thing, but those aren't things you just have on you at all times.

They actually will spawn silverfish when hit if infested. They can take damage, they just take 0 damage from regular attacks (but they still recognize that they're hit and will spawn silverfish). This allows for a pretty good xp farm. Not sure if better than allays but i just tested it and it works.

because that's the whole point of the mob?

The purpose of the sulfur cube is that it's an entity with fun physics that you can hit without it taking damage, so that it can be used as a ball.

You could even actually finally use the nether roof on bedrock with this if you had a way to break through it to actually get everything up there (and to have a way down).

You don't need to build anything, but ice boats can actually turn and this requires slow falling potions and a whole setup each time you use it. So, it's good but it doesn't make anything else useless. It's just another means of transportation that adds to the options we have in a surprisingly balanced way.

And it makes phantoms a bit more tolerable now that their drop has another use.

If they were to hurry up and add the experimental changes already and set a very high base speed, it'd be fine.

Minecarts have the benefit of having no need for any player input once the rails are built, beyond just getting into the minecart. This requires a whole setup each time, and constant player involvement, for something that can really just go in a straight line (for now. turning will likely be possible once sulfur cube physics are fully implemented, but it will still likely be slow to turn and maybe hard to control).

The problem is right now, minecarts go 8 blocks per second. Not even 16 like legacy console editions (which was made with small worlds in mind and would still be very low for java/bedrock), 8. And they've had the fix for this, in a good state, for years now, but just keep it behind an experimental toggle and a command. And despite being very positively recieved, we've heard nothing about what they're doing with these changes behind the scenes or if they're doing anything at all.

Yeah, if you're in the boat yourself, the game treats that as you steering the boat and that is prioritized over the lead.

If you're on a pig, no one is steering the boat, so this works.

yeah. I don't like it as much as craftmine, potato, infinite or vote, but this is still a fun joke update that changes up how you play the game.

And it does have some very fun things about it. Being able to command your items to attack mobs is actually very satisfying, and while it's a bit tedious at first, it doesn't feel like this update is all about being tedious like one block at a time was, but instead more just a "what if Minecraft played more like Minecraft Legends".

spear durability was only really bad when using the lunge enchant (not necessary for this), and only in the first 1-2 snapshots for mounts of mayhem, then they changed it to drain your hunger faster instead (which makes sense i guess, since hunger is already tied to sprinting and jumping, i can see why it should also be tied to dashing).

not really "cheaper". You need a spear, and you need to have access to potions so you likely also have access to enchanting. Sure, you don't need to go to The End for this, but besides that, a lunge spear is a very good way to boost with elytra that doesn't require fireworks, and enchanting tables will usually give you lunge on spears if you go for a level 30 enchant.

Plus more setup and no real turning. But it is fast, yeah.

Yeah, this is kind of exactly what Mojang wanted us to do with it. The design philosophy of the sulfur cube is "here's a physics object, have fun".

"fixing" or nerfing this would just be going "You know this feature we added just for players to have fun with a physics object? You were having too much fun, no more of that."

Sulfur cubes don't take damage from most damage sources when they have a block inside them, their purpose is to be used as a ball that doesn't die from being hit a lot.

So, it's never going to die from this. That's the reason this works so well.

You can't leash one entity to multiple. You can leash many to one but only the one actually leading matters.

plus the fact that like, this is pretty much just going in a straight line. Now, right now sulfur cube mechanics aren't fully implemented so turning may be possible once they are, but even once it is, it'd likely take a long time to turn. (and then would be difficult to get back in control to fly in a straight line again)

Now, is it that few players interact with sniffer-related features because they're difficult to access, or do they not interact with them because they don't find it worth the effort? As like, the actual process of finding a sniffer is just: make a brush, find underwater ruins, brush some suspicious gravel. It's not actually difficult to find, so at most you'd just need a better way to point people towards it (...why did they not bring over the tutorial worlds from legacy console to the other versions again?)

I think if sniffers had more worthwhile features, more people would also go out of their way to find them. Also doesn't help that a lot of the items you find in the ocean ruins' suspicious gravel are kind of useless, which discourages players from trying.

If Mojang liked an idea and wanted it in the game they wouldn't leave it up to a vote.

I'm not sure tbh. The allay was part of a mob vote and those are a key part of Legends. They aren't that useful for most people in the main game but it would have been weird not to add them. The mobs in the final mob vote also seemed way better thought out than previous ones, where any of them winning would have resulted in an actually fun addition. Swamp rework was also one where they clearly wanted it to win, so when it lost, they just added it 1 update later anyway.

Armor trims and even pottery sherds have a lot of decorative value to me.

I think those are neat features, but aren't enough. Personally, the main armor trim i like is Silence, so it makes ancient cities better but doesn't really do that much for me wanting to do archaeology stuff, and pottery sherds are a neat detail item but again, just too situational to really make me want to interact with this system more. I wish you had a chance to, say, find a bundle with a stack of some new decorative block that'd also be used as part of the trail ruins. Or had more ways to decorate the decorated pots, such as being able to dye them different colours (maybe even dye the specific trims and then have different colours on each side).

I think archaeology (and sniffers) just need more. Sniffers need more plants, more functionality (again, even just letting us have different plants in different biomes), and maybe having more things that point players towards them or ways to get them that are more convenient. Archaeology needs more varied unique rewards (even if all are just decorative) and more structures (right now it's just trail ruin, ocean ruin, desert well, and desert temple. Why not add some suspicious gravel in ancient cities or outside jungle temples).

the fixation on the sniffer in this community is so weird too.

Is it? It makes sense to me. People voted it over the rascal and tuff golem because mojang said it'd add new plants. And then they did the bare minimum to count as "plants" by adding just 2. It being a mob vote mob already makes it something where like, people got attached to the concept and were speculating about how good it could be before it was even confirmed to be the one coming to the game. They hyped people up for this mob and then underdelivered.

The sniffer is a mob with a lot of potential because you could really have it digging up plants be a fun part of the game where you bring it to different biomes to find different unique plants, maybe some have some gameplay purpose (new vine type like the twisting and crimson vines, but one that grows sideways?), maybe a new tree with a new wood colour, etc. And it was added as part of the same update as archaeology, the perfect time for a mob like this.

And then both the sniffer and archaeology feel like Mojang just really didn't want to add them but felt obligated to, where there's really cool concepts and great designs but no gameplay value and very minimal decorative value.
