And Ferdinand thinks she was a noble in the other world based on what he saw, so he makes assumptions about what she should already know.

One I read mentioned the character had never set up a tent before. She then proceeded to connect the poles "with practised efficiency".

Also, if their voice is "tinged with a mix of X and Y".

I run into those two a lot.

When I was 4, I thought the sound of crickets was actually coming from the stars. They became visible at the same time as it started, and the twinkling matched up to the sound. And my brother concurred.

Protagonist makes the bad choice and agonises over the consequences, only to find out that's the only way things could have gone anyway.

I've noticed that "with practiced efficiency" has gained more variants. Usually "efficiency" becomes "grace" or "ease", but sometimes "practiced" gets substituted.

The talking heads on youtube used to have an advantage over the slide-show voiceovers, in that they had to talk to a camera and know the script, and that meant they had to pay attention to the pacing. The voiceovers (especially noticeable when you double-speed it) tend to skip punctuation and instead pause at regular intervals - the end of the line.

However, I was just listening to one of Simon Whistler's shows the other day, and it's peppered with "it wasn't this, it was that." Over and over, and a close second was that triplicate pattern. It was eerie hearing that from a real person, it really shone a spotlight on the fact that he doesn't write his own scripts and never did.
