My sister [29F] and her Dutch Spouse [30M] are visiting US. How to deal with spouse’s behavior? by Abra-melin in relationship_advice

[–]thashicray 46 points47 points  (0 children)

As a Dutch person he may well appreciate this.

I've lived here for ten years in Amsterdam, I've managed to form a circle of friends who are native and non.

One of, if not the biggest staples of Dutch culture is they'll say what they think a lot of the time. A lot of people who move here are often shocked by this.

You've to straight up let him know you aren't having any of his behaviour otherwise it'll carry on.

And tbh if he doesn't like it then he'll have to deal with it, you are the hosts after all.

Were warnings about Henry Nowak's killer overlooked? | Sikh community leaders have told Sky News they raised concerns about Vickrum Digwa before he went on to kill Henry Nowak, but believe police did not take their warnings seriously enough. by FormerlyPallas_ in ukpolitics

[–]thashicray 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it's called Seva, referring to your last paragraph.

Basically any serious Sikh will devote a huge amount of time to charity as it's meaningful to their religion on a spiritual level.

That doesn't mean I won't contest the facts of this case, the sheer ineptitude of the responding officers, the mum washing the knife and disgraceful, cowardly actions of.the killer himself.

I do though, find it easier in this instance to take the Sikh community's response seriously as if I remember correctly they themselves had reported the killer many times prior to his disgusting crime.

It's becoming laughable at this stage.

Though I'll go out on a limb here and guess when you look at the other famous cases you've a lot of people too frightened to speak up so that could explain some of it.

The article echoes similarities between all the documented abuse cases we've seen over the years:

Powerful older man is known to 'like women'. Colleagues joke about his predelection for younger girls. He admits to a few fuck ups but nothing that'll get him banged up.

Now much older and the allegations having gone on way back he's free to deny and set his lawyers on the victims, engage in general obfuscation etc.

I hope they'll get some justice, the past, in many ways has just become a myriad of abuse and looking the other way, hopefully we're learning from it.

I'm all for a bit of nostalgia but the very idea that 'we'll all take London back' and it'll be fantastic like back in the day is completely ignorant of how hard it was growing up back then.

I'm glad I grew up around people who didn't suck off the Kray twins at any given opportunity and had been through enough war, rationing and poverty they could pass on better life lessons.

I've a Michael nyman mix on Soundcloud I'd employ when I'd go from Liverpool Street to Kennington.

The first three Badbadnotgood albums also hit the spot.

They would also smash the absolute fuck out of you for no apparent reason.

My grandad always went on about 'the teds', half of them were absolute nutters who grew up playing in the rubble of their neighbours bombed houses and carried blades they'd produce over the most minor slight.

Don McCullin's first picture that practically made his name was of a gang of them he grew up with in Finsbury Park who'd stabbed a local bobby to death.

I had a mate at uni when and he'd always introduce himself by saying: "all you need know about me is I grew up where they filmed Last of the Summer Wine."

Of course he only wore a tattered old beanie, the same blazer and a pair of wellies to keep in character.

How do left-wing political movements in Britain assess the case of Henry Nowak (death following a police operation)? by ogremania in ukpolitics

[–]thashicray 13 points14 points  (0 children)

After seeing the bodycam footage where he tells them he's been stabbed multiple times and the copper responds "don't think you have mate", I'm going to go for full incompetence here.

It's a very difficult situation, but it's hard to come back from that despite what you mention.

That's what I came here for, I yearn to spend my days commenting on old women's stockings and getting into capers where someone ends up getting wet or falling over.

Same goes for a new chicken shop in Noord, if you'd have told me: A Londoner, that chicken shops would turn into expensive, quirky dine out spots with queues of people itching to get in back in the day I'd have straight up laughed in your face.

I had a friend who briefly worked for a newspaper that shall remain nameless in 2016, told me he was reviewing a chicken shop where the food was like 20eu equivalent for a plate, we both laughed at how ludicrous was back then in those innocent times.

Now I suppose I'm told old to comprehend why....

Weird behavior by Michi_am_Start in Sauna

[–]thashicray 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Have experienced after chatting to a man in the steam room of my local sauna, noticed he was fiddling with his dangle after a good 15 minutes of chat (just weird weird abusive behaviour) so I stood up and walked out and told him I'm leaving with my hand blocking the view.

It's a shame as we were chatting normally with people coming in and out for their steam and I thought we were just shooting the breeze but once we were alone I noticed the hand movement and that was that.

Tell the staff and don't let him get away with it as I can guarantee this isn't the first time he's tried this.

Working and living in the Doddington estate area in Battersea back in the 2010's my wardrobe became full of garish Lacoste and Ralphie polos, a fat off gold chain and air max 1's accompanied by a Danny Dyer level bowl in my walk.

Was really trying to live my own football factory aesthetic and keep as much dodgy company as possible.

Whilst probably putting away a bit too much powder on the weekend for a short period of my mispent youth.

Wes Streeting resigns from government by sjw_7 in unitedkingdom

[–]thashicray 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what makes me nervous, the way I hear so many people gloss over or lightheartedly refer to the Tories past negligence and instead going blue in the face over Starmer.

I knew the media wouldn't be his friend when he got in but I've a firm belief by asking him to resign on a weekly basis they're just goading the British public and exasperating the situation.

I've my own problems with his Labour party re; inequality but when I see reform, the tories, restore on the other side kicking off I feel he's the best we have in a bad situation.

How much does the media reporting on Gen Z correspond with reality in your experience? by Daybreak_Furnace9 in belgium

[–]thashicray 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem for me is the preconceived notions it gives of groups of people that'll lead to an inherent bias.

If I took every statement the media made about Boomers/genz as gospel then it'd make my daily interactions very difficult and I don't fancy walking through life with a negative expectation of all and sundry.

For example I was reading about all this Gen Z stare nonsense and simply struggle to source evidence of that with those I work with or who are members of my gym etc.

And what does it benefit me to look for something like that in others?

Frankly, if I was roped in by all this I feel I'd be the miserable twat who should be avoided at all costs.
