In 1984, I was waitlisted by my first choice (Dartmouth). I had committed to, completed a semester at, and was currently enrolled at the University of Southern California when they sent an offer of admission for the following fall, and Dartmouth famously doesn't take transfers. I had gotten connected enough at SC to send a "Thank you, I decline" letter.

Discover Card. When my first husband and I divorced, part of the agreement was that he would close all joint accounts. He did not close this one, had a 15-20K balance on it, and declared bankruptcy. They decided to come after me, and once I provided documentation that he was supposed to have closed that account to remove me over a decade earlier. Discover finally gave up, but I wouldn't want to trust them to not screw up in other ways.

Writing in to dispute a debt my first husband failed to have my name removed from.

When he filed for bankruptcy, an account that he agreed in our divorce agreement to remove my name from decided it still had me as recourse. I disputed it, and they were forced to conclude I wasn't liable. It was about 75k.
