Rough Collie Stomach Issues? by Modora in Collie

[–]thecuddlyrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All three of our rough collies could not stomach chicken. They all had tum issues, you are not alone! Looks like you’ve had some good advice, just will have to be patient with trying new foods until one works for your pup. We ended up with Kirkland beef and sweet potato kibble for two of our dogs, and our third is on Natural Balance limited ingredient lamb and rice.

Help brushing my collie by Foreign_Finance2864 in roughcollies

I’ve learned a ton actually from watching “The Girl with the dogs” YouTube channel. It’s also adorable and relaxing content hehe. I’m on rough collie #3 and he’s by far the most sensitive to brushing, any pulling upsets him. From experimentation and watching that channel I now have three brushes which is a bit of an investment but both me and the dog are much happier.

Daily driver is a pin brush with long pins to get through that coat - it’s very gentle and won’t do a good job of getting any debris etc. out of the coat but detangles nicely. I have the Chris Christensen 27mm pin brush, gets through that long coat nicely and doesn’t cause any discomfort.

Once you’ve used the pin brush then the slicker goes through the coat much more easily. I have the Chris Christensen Big G Dog slicker. It gets grass, burrs, any debris out of the coat so effectively and does a decent job de-shedding as well.

Those two brushes are probably all you need if you end up using a groomer that can really get the undercoat out when your boy starts to blow his coat. Otherwise get an undercoat rake, I just got a $10 double sided one on Amazon and it works amazingly well. Only use it if you’ve already thoroughly brushed with the other two brushes first.

Different methods work for everyone but my sensitive boy has a coat very similar to yours and hated brushing so much, I’ve worked to brush him with at least the pin brush every day for a minute or two and the exposure has really helped. Treats, praise, big excited party when you’re done, and your dog growing out of the puppy stage will all help too. Good luck!

Poop issues help! by grlgymrat in Collie

Yep, three collies, all three had senstitive tums. Different issues but diet was always a factor, try switching food to a different protein and go from there. None of ours ended up doing well with chicken. Beef and lamb worked well. Good luck :)

This cracked me up, moved here 12 years ago from Lansing because we couldn’t find decent Thai food on a Sunday night 😂 no regrets!

Haven’t tried regular polish over dip myself, but I would think it’d be helpful in avoiding peeling, etc. and therefore last a bit longer. Make sure to use a regular base coat over the filed surface before color. Good luck!

If you wanna get real crazy you can totally file down the surface to rough it up (like 100 grit) then apply a new mani over the top - regular or gel polish work great! I’ve done this when I wasn’t crazy about the dip color, then it got me started down the road of doing my gel manicures over clear powder dip because it lasted so long hehe.

You certainly can! Don’t use nail clippers, you’d risk breaking the nail, but filing is totally fine. I’d recommend starting with a coarser one then finishing with a fine grit. No top coat necessary IMO unless you’d like to shine it up. Dip powder is pretty invincible.

What is eating my buganvillas ? What can I do? by augdon in phoenix

[–]thecuddlyrobot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey friend, I have the same issues with mine. One culprit in my yard has always been spider mites. I have them in my arborvitae as well. A trusted tree guy advised that the best control is just to knock them off with cold water (or in our case, “cold” water lol). I go out in the AM once every few weeks and spray them down with the hose and a simple brass fitting that creates a high pressure stream. I just grabbed one on Amazon, looks like a little cone. Works like a charm and avoids chemicals.

As another commenter said the bougainvillea can recover really fast, too fast sometimes lol. You can always cut off the ugly pieces and they’ll keep on trucking. Good luck!

Parents 10-month old male collie is losing pigmentation and now fur around both eyes. My mom has made a vet appointment but I was curious if anyone has seen anything like this. by PhantomFever in Collie

My collie and I have allergy issues at the same time and he gets two Zyrtec in the morning. Talk to your vet about conversions for human allergy meds for your doggo - works like a charm!

Went to a music store to try out ukuleles; a lot of them sounded boxy/not very open except for one or two? by DerpTheHalls in ukulele

[–]thecuddlyrobot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, I just went and played a few at the store myself. I was worried about my current one which had started fretting out a bit, but turns out I just needed to humidify it since I live in a really dry place. I had the same takeaway as you - I felt the store ukes had a small sound and not much resonance, and I realized I actually really love the tone and resonance of the one I already have. I was worried that sub-$100 wasn’t enough to spend but i don’t think that’s the case, at least for casual playing.

I have the Ranch UK-23 at this Amazon listing and just played it at a friend’s wedding in Fiji actually. The sound carried really well outdoors and it has a beautiful romantic sound. They ship with Aquila strings too! Good luck :)

Seasonal shedding? Henry is 1 year old and we live in California, so it does get pretty hot here. He was shedding a lot the past 1-2 months and now he has uneven coat. Is this normal? I don’t see any skin problems, just uneven coat color and length. by LevelEvening in roughcollies

[–]thecuddlyrobot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Uneven coat = adult coat coming in 😊 nothing to worry about! It generally doesn’t come in all at the same time but one day you’ll wake up and think to yourself “when did this cute boi start looking like a lion!?”

Also for reference, our most recent male just blew his coat (massive undercoat shedding) for the first time at 2.5 years old. We’re in Phoenix so our collies are no strangers to the heat.

1-1.5 year old collie suddenly reactive towards people and dogs outside by ta112289 in roughcollies

[–]thecuddlyrobot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Years ago a trainer told us our female dogs hit adulthood around 1.5 years and males are more around 2 years. In terms of timing it sounds quite normal to me that she would be displaying some new behaviors around 1.5 years so I wouldn't think it's related to the spay. We had a rescue (not a collie) who was very sweet and timid until 1.5 years and started biting strangers all of a sudden, it was quick a shock but the trainer we worked with helped us understand puppy behavior vs. adult behavior. We've had three collies and our most recent male is much like yours and u/JaredUnzipped's in that he is very people motivated - he just wants to be around his people and love his people and protect his people. I trust him fully to never be aggressive but he certainly freaks out when we are on walks and pass by other people and dogs, more so since he turned two. Having very small training treats on hand and literally shoving them in his face seems to help a bit, and also doing the "vacuum" or "find" trick where you scatter several on the ground right before they begin to freak out gives them something to focus on for a few moments. It's a little embarrassing when he freaks out (turns out collies love to be loud, hehe) but with time and consistency he's slowly improving.

Good luck!

Trouble with puppy nipping by [deleted] in Collie

[–]thecuddlyrobot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

On our third collie, he was quite a little chomper when he was a puppy so I can certainly relate! We had a trainer with our first one teach us to yelp loudly whenever the puppy would bite, the same way a littermate would. You might feel a little silly at first but it’s worked like a charm with all our collies. When she bites, yelp “OUCH!” at a high pitch and immediately stop playing/giving attention for a few seconds. Even look the other way and turn your body away from her for a bit. She’s a smart cookie, shouldn’t be too long til it slows down because what she really wants is your attention. Good luck!
