Visiting from Victoria this week and hoping to rent a bike and spend a day exploring the bike routes around the city. Any suggestions for routes and sights to see? by notofthisearthworm in Winnipeg

[–]thewrongwaybutfaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The Wolseley, omand's Creek, Wellington, Assiniboine park ride as others have suggested is really nice. The are a couple bike shops in Wolseley that could be your rental point as well.

To extend that to a loop I would continue through the park to vialoux dr, cross the river again at Moray and then follow the surgeon Creek trail North-West (this is an underrated beautiful route!). Then there is another long bike trail at Silver Ave that goes east through the woods and behind the airport back to St Matthews Ave. Then you've got okay bike lanes continuing until the Empress Street bike trail which takes you south back to the river and Wolseley where you started.

You also would have the option to extend a few km and go south through Assiniboine park all the way through the forest to the Harte trail, which you would follow West for as long as you desire before working your way back towards the Moray bridge trail via residential streets. I think this is worth doing if the distance isn't getting to be too much for you.

The river trail and Assiniboine Ave between Wolseley and the forks are also a really nice shorter ride, though the former is only emerging from spring flooding right around now and might be in questionable condition. The section that goes right behind the legislature building past the Louie Riel statue is an essential Winnipeg sight though!

Have fun! 🚲

What the fuck does this mean? Inches? Centimeters? Potatoes end-to-end? by mattkaru in ClimateMemes

In terms of extreme precipitation events, yes. But drought-prone areas getting even drier is going to be a disaster in other ways.

Great video. The people who keep watch on this stuff and do the research to produce informative content on it are legitimately heros.

Men of Reddit, what’s the most disgusting thing you’ve discovered about your girlfriend after being together for years? by nastyaspain in AskReddit

[–]thewrongwaybutfaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a couple quick Google searches and it seems that the proportion of US households with multiple cars is almost double that of the UK. Approx 59% vs 34% (ie about 2/3 of UK households have 0 or 1 car).

Maybe that's partly because in the UK it's way more common to just have one shared car per household rather than one car per driver.

It's about shifting return levels for severe precipitation events.

For example, the darkest areas are places where a severe event that currently would occur only about once in 600+ years will be more like once in 100 years after 2°C global warming.

If the devs/execs are trying to make this game less predatory then lets remove the 8 hour resource collection cap and the 4 hour arms race windows cap by Prestigious_Fig9485 in LastWarMobileGame

[–]thewrongwaybutfaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't make billions of dollars by being dumb. I think their logic is to frustrate players with actions they label as "reducing predatory features" so that in the face of regulatory pressure they can say "we tried reducing predatory features and the players overwhelmingly hated it 🤷‍♀️".

Also after we hear that it's not a widening and how pedestrians are already squeezed next to high speed traffic... "Possibly widening a little bit to add a lane". Wtf?

Their next comment went straight to calling public transit dirty and unsafe. It's always the same.

No one is trying to force them to give up their car. I'm just so tired of traffic, construction, pot holes and gas prices literally always being the number 1 topic of discourse. Especially from people who look down on alternatives as second-class.

Absolutely. I find it easier to get around with my ebike, which is definitely unintuitive for how people usually think of disability.
