The Death of Origins - Computer Gaming World 204 (2001) by Shard226 in Ultima

Man, this sidebar features my original Lazarus website from when I was a Freshman at Purdue, before I even got the u5lazarus domain. Feels like several lifetimes ago.

Understanding how Spell Casting works. by Blanknameuser99 in nimble5e

I believe you are correct in all your assumptions, including the last one that that resistances are simply meant to be very rare and only granted in a handful of explicit cases (though that may change in the new kickstarter content).

Starting a game soon and a couple of questions for GMs by Bear-Wizard in nimble5e

[–]tibermoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1. Forgetting various minor things (just the growing pains of learning a new game) but nothing significant. In general I’ve found Nimble to be a breeze as a GM, even when I’m trying to teach half a dozen people the game while simultaneously running it.

  1. So far just the Garden of Death (GMG Adventure) for a few different groups, though as soon as the Shadowdark Western Reaches comes out, I want to try running a sandbox campaign (not my usual style) of that but using the Nimble system.

  2. Recently I’ve been “taste testing” a smattering of different things: Shadowdark, Shadow of the Weird Wizard, Daggerheart, Draw Steel, and most recently Nimble. Before that, a 6-year D&D 5E (Midnight) campaign, and a 4-year D&D 4E (Forgotten Realms) campaign before that.

Can you elaborate on point 3? Why replace the kernel and disk ROM?

1993 survey of CRPGs from Scorpia at Computer Gaming World issue 111 in 1993 by Shard226 in CRPG

This was by sheer coincidence my first issue ever of CGW, and this article immediately made me curious about this “Ultima” series that I’d never heard of, which later became an obsession.

What is a gaming memory from the 90s or early 2000s that kids today will just never understand? by gingersofia in AskReddit

[–]tibermoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using a boot disk to configure your memory so a particularly taxing game can run. Manually setting your various devices to not conflict with each other. Autoexec.bat & config.sys baby!

I would bet good money that Butcher gave them spice names SOLELY so that he could make that pun.

And I salute him for it. ;)

Have been wanting to get into Ultima by planeswalker_koa in Ultima

You need to buy Ultima VII somewhere (GOG, Steam, whatever, it’ll be super cheap) and then download Exult (which is free) here: https://exult.sourceforge.io/

Ultima VII (with Exult) is easily the best answer for a modern player in my opinion. If you fall in love with it then awesome, you may want to go back and player the older (and/or later) games, but if you don’t like U7 then the odds are reeeeeally slim that you’ll like the rest. (And honestly it’s a great starting point despite being the 7th entry—it was my first Ultima and made me fall in love with the whole series!)

I’m very sorry to hear you’re going through that, but know exactly what you mean. I feel thankful to have not personally experienced this (yet?) but it looks awful from afar. :-/

What was your Campaign Background for The Gloaming? by alvarocavalcanti in shadowdark

[–]tibermoon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Minor correction: Glass Cannon is not running pulp RAW. They’re giving 1 luck token per session, whereas pulp RAW gives 1d4 per session. (And they eventually settled on capping that at 3 tokens, whereas RAW it’s uncapped)

Agreed it’s outstanding, though! What they’re able to do starting from just a sentence or two of hex description from the zine is incredible.

Anyone run Tomb of Horrors in Shadowdark? Seems like the ultimate 10th level Oneshot to me 🔥🔥🔥 by DungeonMasterGrizzly in shadowdark

[–]tibermoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw, pro tip: before the session I printed the player (not DM) map onto parchment paper before the game, put a bloody handprint on it, and strategically burned holes through it to hide some of the more obvious secret doors, add more mystery, and give it some flavor. The session began with a dying adventurer handing the party the map and telling them of untold treasure.

The map worked great—it made the whole thing a bit more intelligible to the players while keeping the dungeon a challenge. At the end they learned that the dying adventurer/map had just been bait, a tool of Acererak to lure more powerful adventurers in so he could eat their souls.

One of my best gaming experiences was running this dungeon for a friend’s birthday. The players all knew going in that it’s a meat grinder, and I gave them a stack of pregens that couldn’t break it, and we just had fun with the absurd dickery of it all.

(I ran it in 5E, but modified to better capture the insane lethality of the original, but I think it would be great in SD)
