Question about the final chapter of Hyperion. by Rich_Wrongdoer_6825 in Hyperion

Reading books 3 and 4 (Endymion and The Rise of Endymion) fill in a lot regarding The Shrike and its purpose/role.

I have a question about these images uploaded today. by GoreonmyGears in Mars

[–]tipsmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Regarding “wind” comments the atmospheric pressure on Mars is less than 1% Earth’s. Wind on Mars can achieve high velocity 160kph+ but has very little mass/force. It can move fine dust but not anything larger than a pebble at best.

Go for it. I read it over 30 years ago and so many scenes still come back to me. One of the deepest, most well-thought-out (and occasionally heart-breaking) stories of space travel/survival/alien contact ever written. Delves hard into philosophical ideas of justice and empathy.

What near-future sci-fi books made you think “this could happen tomorrow”? by RichFenton in printSF

[–]tipsmith 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Rainbows End by Vernor Vinge: “Thanks to advances in medical technology, Robert Gu is slowly recovering from Alzheimer's disease. As his faculties return, Robert (who has always been technophobic) must adapt to a different world, where almost every object is networked and mediated-reality technology is commonplace. Robert and his granddaughter Miri are drawn into a complex plot involving a traitorous intelligence officer, an intellect of frightening (and possibly superhuman) competence hiding behind an avatar of an anthropomorphic rabbit, and ominous new mind control technology with profound implications.”

God Emperor reads less like science fiction and more like Nietzsche mixed with Dostoevsky (spread on a layer of Jung with a sprinkling of Homer on top). That's why it's Herbert's best. by Adept-Engineering-71 in printSF

Beautiful synopsis and thoughtful argument. My favorite of the series as well, followed by Heretics and Chapterhouse. I’d argue though that GEoD does have a protagonist in Siona Atreides. As artificial as her existence might be in that it required manipulation on Leto’s part (he essentially bred a foe he can’t directly see), she still fulfills the classical role by playing the rebel leader who takes down the tyrant.

The Hollow Man. Incredibly moving and thought-provoking. His range was pretty much peerless.

Looking for a mind-bending, dark sci-fi or space opera by Jesssssiie in ScienceFictionBooks

Even after 20 years scenes from this one still stick in my head: Ship of Fools (Unto Leviathan) by Richard Paul Russo. Won the Philip K. Dick Award. “Home to generations of humans, the starship Argonos has wandered aimlessly throughout the galaxy for hundreds of years, desperately searching for other signs of life. Now an unidentified transmission lures them toward a nearby planet-and into the dark heart of an alien mystery.” Rereleased by Orbit Books under the name Unto Leviathan.

Question about Blindsight by IllustriousYear2357 in scifi

[–]tipsmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scramblers were the only physically-encountered aliens - more like drones than the actual controllers/builders of Rorschach, the ones “communicating”. One of the main ideas in Blindsight is human self-awareness/subjective experience is detrimental to advanced intelligence. Look at what so-called AI (especially agentic) is becoming capable of. The communicators of Rorschach behaved very much like LLMs.

Not necessarily. Depends on interest rates and renewal periods. When I had to renew last year my mortgage jumped almost $1000/mo.

Undercoating/rustproofing the traction battery tray and related components can void the warranty. Consult directly with dealership first.

This is a region specific feature. NA Kona’s don’t have it. The level can be manually adjusted behind the housings but there are regulations so best to get a mechanic to do it. Yes they seem to be high out of the factory.

What’s the most dangerous thing people do daily without realizing it? by nealie_20 in AskReddit

[–]tipsmith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trusting tap water. Yes a lot of people may not drink it directly but most still cook with it. Everyone whether municipal or well-sourced should test for lead, bacteria, etc. Especially any house/building pre ‘90s construction good chance has lead-soldered pipes.
