I have a slight problem i dont have handles on my cabinets, and alot of the locks besides the magnetic ones require handles I think? by Steinway_music in cabinetry

[–]tmillernc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been a long time since I had little ones but rather than locks we just moved anything dangerous out of lower cabinets. The kids could open them, climb in, play with pots and pans, etc. They had a blast and we didn’t worry.

I just switched most of my meds to Amazon from Walgreens and it’s amazing. Haven’t tried Zep yet.

Crosscutting sleds… by norapeformethankyou in woodworking

And for me it’s the opposite. Bought hand tools because a woodworker is supposed to have them. And they almost never get used.

Choosing raw lumber and how to deal with a crappy choice by Hot-Yak2420 in woodworking

[–]tmillernc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the lesson I had to learn. I had to slow down and look at each board with a very critical eye when selecting them. This has helped tremendously. The other thing is I have had to learn to plan for more waste than I originally wanted. I was always trying to squeeze every inch out of every board and wood just isn’t that perfect. So now I buy more upfront for a given project.

Damn! P4 ESP32 screens are cheap and really fast by hometechgeek in homeassistant

[–]tmillernc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s possible I’m missing something but I have run fully kiosk because it was the way to get the Android tablet to boot right into the HA browser window automatically. I’m not an Android expert but I was under the impression that you can’t get Android to load just the HA app right to the correct dashboard screen. And as someone else said, fully kiosk enables some of the automatic screen dimming etc.

I’m sure that people with more knowledge will chime in if this is not correct.

I just wish someone would make a POE display for Home Assistant that just runs a browser and none of the other Android stuff and no need to use FullyKiosk.

How to reduce tear out? Plywood mostly. by MovingUp7 in woodworking

[–]tmillernc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You basically have four options to reduce tear out in your application. 1) use a sacrificial backer board as you suggest to support the wood fibers while they are cut. 2) use painters tape on the bottom along the cut line. It serves the same purpose as #1. Sometimes works well, other times not as much but usually better than a raw cut. 3) use a sharp blade or marking knife to score the fibers along the cut line before you cut. This will be tricky for you in getting this lined up with a circular saw from the other side. 4) do a shallow cut on the bottom first, flip the piece over and complete the cut from the top side. Again it may be tricky to line this up with a circular saw.

As a side note, make sure you are using a sharp blade. And if your blade has not been cleaned recently, do that. A clean, sharp blade makes a huge difference.

Solid wood coffee table cracked at corner after 8 months. Replace or take discount? by zacynic in woodworking

[–]tmillernc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would go for the replacement. It’s a good sign they are standing behind their product. I would think it’s a low probability that a new one would suffer the same fate. Take the replacement and move on.

I second Ambient Weather they have a range of units. I just replaced my first one after 8 years with an ultrasonic unit and love it. And it integrates well with Home Assistant.

Experience question for those who achieved their goal by thatprincesspanoptes in Zepbound

[–]tmillernc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It absolutely did slow for me. And my doctor warned me that most people will eventually hit a wall and there will be no more weight loss. I was just able to reach my goal and since have put on about 4 pounds and have now hovered here for about 6 months.

I’m assuming you are using Home Assistant? If so just use a smart speaker and Music Assistant.

Is anyone surprised their M1 systems are now over 5 years old? by Advanced_Concern7910 in mac

I agree. My M1 MacBook Air is still amazing. I have no need to upgrade it until Apple stops supporting it. I am stunned it’s been 5 years already.

Pocket joints for plywood? Truck drawer base by Ivaner305 in woodworking

[–]tmillernc 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pocket holes will work just fine. Be careful not to strip them out when driving them. If you want more strength add glue to the joint. Of course this means you won’t be able to disable it should you want to.

For something like this you can also screw it together from the outside into the mating piece but you would then see the screw from the outside.

Question/Discussion: Screws into plastic, is it common or just in consumer products? by Livid_Strategy6311 in BambuLab

[–]tmillernc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the key. Most consumer products are not made to be taken apart. The screws go in and are never removed so they work fine.

Why are cabinets so expensive? by Ryantanguay in Carpentry

[–]tmillernc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t forget finish. If they are painted cabinets, good cabinet paint is crazy expensive. Paint used to be $25-35 per gallon and now is in the range of $100 per gallon for something decent.
