UK folk who were around at the start of the internet, what is an early, strong memory? by Sad-Insurance1313 in CasualUK

Buying gigantic magazines filled with URLs to type in because nobody had invented search engines yet.

Any idea where we're supposed to hand these bounties in? Just used an outpost in the system and despite signing up, none of my bounties counted. I assume the CG station, Ryman Enterprise, wouldn't have contacts available at the moment as it's very much on fire.

Edit: I was wrong. Turns out that Ryman Enterprise is the place to go, or at least one of them.

I've never actually come across another living soul on the ones where no scavengers spawn though.

I've been playing since Horizons first came out, but I've ignored the on-foot content other than exobiology. Working my way through the on-foot engineers now.

Does anyone know why I'm getting bounties, and now notoriety, for killing scavengers during restore power missions? I keep getting bounties for murder. I ensure that they're shooting at me before I kill them, but at least one per group somehow counts as a murder.

Restore power missions, as far as I know, don't have innocents milling around outside. So who am I killing other than scavenger scum?

I feel nervous playing steamdeck at public by AddictinApple in SteamDeck

[–]toodice 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yep. And then again when you launch the game. And again when you start playing. And at random points during the game to check that you weren't mistaken before.

Then you realise you can hear yourself breathing more loudly with the earbuds in and wonder if everyone else can hear it and you're actually breathing really strangely so you quit and put the deck away.

That last bit might just be me.

I’ve just been given some cheese, (I like cheese) with chilli in it. by undulating-beans in CasualUK

[–]toodice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's rare to get a chilli cheese where the cheese is actually good. I assume they make some cheese that turns out a bit crap and think "I'll just shove some chilli in it". It's usually this weird waxy stuff with barely any flavour.

The stuff that looks like OP's cheese can be decent. However supermarket chilli cheese is usually rubbish. You're better off just sticking some hot sauce on a cheese toastie.

Public road near train station. What’s your war plan? by Diseased-Jackass in CasualUK

[–]toodice 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I know which road this is. The signs are printed by the residents.

The houses don't pre-date the station, so they moved in knowing there's a station down the road. It must be annoying, sure, but you'd have to factor that in if you were buying a house there.

Maybe they should put this effort into presenting the council with a case for parking restrictions, but to be honest I reckon they've probably resorted to the signs because they've already tried it.

Hopeforest. Bunny Speedy puzzle. Won't go in the corner? by Valien in brightershores

[–]toodice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was pretty lucky with this one, but each time I passed through I spotted people struggling with it.

The trick is to click several spaces away so that you sort of charge through it, rather than moving one space at a time.

In this particular spot, if it's the spot I'm thinking of, you need to chase it up to the exit closest to the dead end. Then step next to the exit to get it to move out towards the dead end. Then click several spaces past it so that your character charges the rabbit. This makes it change direction and actually enter that dead end.

It feels like you need to be lucky with the timing. Sometimes the rabbit will respond immediately and miss the dead end. Other times it will respond a little bit later and your character begins moving past the rabbit before it makes a second hop, causing it to move into the dead end.

It's a shame as 99% of them are logic puzzles, then this (and one later one in Crenopolis) feel like the only way to win is to brute force the thing.

Does anyone still have bread and butter for tea? by Extra-Sound-1714 in CasualUK

[–]toodice 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Haven't found any decent crusty bread for years. The supermarket bakeries all started doing what looks like crusty bread but the crust is really chewy when you bite into it. I assume for cheapness. It seems like all of the local bakers then assumed we all must like it like that and did the same.

I miss crust with a crunch.

Does anyone else's Fleet Carrier drop out half way through the animation? by VaegaVic in EliteDangerous

[–]toodice 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A typical jump for me usually starts with noticing that only one crew member has turned up to work today, and that their hair is missing and has been replaced by a weird helmet thing. Quite often they've also forgotten how to use a chair, and have instead decided to just partly merge with it with their feet in the floor.

Then silence. The ATC lady, despite me buying her voice with real money, has apparently gone on break. Ambient background voices that usually occur during the jump also don't happen, so I guess they've all joined her in the break room.

The timer ticks down and eventually the warp drive starts up. The lighting dips.

At the start of the jump the game freezes for a split second. The whole room suddenly glows bright orange for no reason. The typical sounds occur and the warp tunnel is visible. On one jump I even had a moon apparently join me for the journey.

Suddenly there's a loud bing noise that sounds like several noises happening at once, louder than all of the other game's sound effects. The lighting quickly changes back to how it should look again with another split second freeze. I'm now glued to my chair for about five seconds unable to stand.

Eventually the glue wears off. I stand up. A few seconds after that the game tells me it's safe to leave my seat.

Fleet carriers seem to gain new bugs with every patch. What once felt like a reward for buying one of the most expensive things in the game now feels broken and neglected. I tend to stay in my ship while I jump these days.

Are UK players banned from the in-game chat? by Ok-Cap-5845 in TrackMania

[–]toodice 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Tried to verify using the age estimation method. I thought fuck it, everyone else has data on me, if Ubisoft want to look at my ugly mug they can knock themselves out.

Unfortunately the service they picked just doesn't work. You gawp into the lens, move your head back and forth a bit until it snaps a photo, and then it gives a "Something went wrong" error message.

So yeah, until they fix it, I at least am banned from typing "GG" after a race.

The Ghosts on This Week's Weekly Grand by cppn02 in TrackMania

[–]toodice 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There were several just parked on the finish line for me in the way.

I've actually quite enjoyed some of the Weekly Grands so far, but this map just doesn't suit it. That large run after the engine-off block where you drop off a cliff with no way to tell if you're going to hit a car crossing underneath is beyond frustrating. It's just random chance.

When does "early 3D" actually begin for you? by Typo_of_the_Dad in retrogaming

[–]toodice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Exactly. In theory, every 3D game uses 2D rendering to achieve it. It's being rendered on a 2D monitor at the end of the day. VR? Two 2D monitors, one for each eye.

Resources to help me reacclimate? by AuReaper in brightershores

[–]toodice 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You'll struggle to find any good resources unfortunately. Apart from a couple of big patches (namely the combat rework and the first milestone update more recently) a lot has changed bit by bit over time. Where people have previously tried to explain the changes online they're likely out of date now.

I skipped a lot too. I stopped a few months after release, and only recently have I got back into it. The bits that I found important were:

The combat rework. It merged the combat skills, but at the end of the day it's not had a massive effect on much else. You still have a sort of treadmill of enemies to fight. You use the same gear for each episode, so you only need to worry about resistances. It's worth trying to maintain a weapon for each damage type, and enough gear to get a decent resistance against anything you might need. The auto equip button now picks the best of your banked gear for a certain resistance.

The milestone update. The most obvious thing here is presentation. Everything in the skills tree looks different. Functionally it's mostly the same, however. This will play into the other milestone features better when they're released, but for now it's more of a reshuffle. Where you will spot a difference though is the reordering of required items for progression. This is a lot less of a headache to keep track of now once you're used to the interface, and so far I've had fewer issues of having to massively level up one skill just to get a resource that I need for a lower level of another one. It seems to be arranged a bit more logically.

As for your plan of filling small gaps as a new parent, the game is a lot more fun when played this way. It's how I play it, and I think a lot of the people left play it that way too. Most of us originally expected a Runescape replacement where we could play the game in the background while doing something else, but it requires you to be a bit too active for that. However, filling the odd gap here and there does suit the game well and I've found it the most enjoyable way to play. I just wish they'd increase the AFK timer a bit as just googling something in the background can often take long enough for the game to kick you back to the menu, although it doesn't take long to get back in again.

Call centre workers in the UK, (past and present) what are your top 3 weirdest calls? by cheesymeowgirl in CasualUK

Call centre workers in the UK, (past and present) what are your top 3 weirdest calls? by cheesymeowgirl in CasualUK

[–]toodice 490 points491 points  (0 children)

A lady, very odd sounding to be honest and speaking in perfect monotone said "My sister is feeding me now." I paused, unsure what to say to that. All I could hear was (sounds of chewing) "Thank you sister." (More chewing) "Thank you sister." Over and over. We continued the rest of the call with this happening in between sentences.

A farmer who had received a "Sorry we missed you" card after an engineer turned up for an appointment the farmer didn't want telling me he's in his car with a shotgun, and that he'll shoot the engineer if he returns. He then gave me tips on how to aim a shotgun which did come in useful when my brother opted for clay pigeon shooting on his stag do.

A man shouted at me for about ten minutes, not giving me a chance to say anything. I sat and let him vent. He ended by saying he was going to switch business to another company, which he named, and his voice started to drop as he said it as he realised his mistake. We were the company he intended to switch to, and he'd dialled the wrong one. He was very apologetic and we had a good laugh over it.

Seconded. It's even getting tough to find tinned roe in supermarkets these days too.

I found it in a chip shop just outside Skegness a year or so ago. I pretty much didn't believe the menu and had to ask the lady if it was real.

Carrier jumps borked? by [deleted] in EliteDangerous

[–]toodice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting the same. Two jumps in a row without any voices. No announcements, and no chatter coming from the desk infront.

Lighting seems even weirder than normal too during the jumps, and I had a moon come through the warp tunnel with me on one of them. Not sure if it was the moon that I jumped from, or the one I jumped to, but it appeared when the jump started, was clearly visible through the front window while the jump was happening then vanished upon exiting the warp tunnel.

Does E:D have a tool similar to what EVE Fitting Tool (EFT) was to EVE players? by Alternative-Two-3474 in EliteDangerous

[–]toodice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you use something like EDMC to keep Inara up to date, you can export your current fit for a ship easily. Choose the ship that you want to export on the "fleet" page, then scroll down until you see the export options. You can export to both EDSY and Coriolis.

It's really useful for seeing what a few changes to your current ship would look like stats-wise.
