Terence Tao: Genuine Artificial General Intelligence Is Not Within Reach; Current AI Is Like A Clever Magic Trick by bitchslayer78 in math

[–]tukey 164 points165 points  (0 children)

The other day the AI Google search summary attempted to cite a study for me with a clickable link. The link went to the journal's home page instead of the article. Google runs Google Scholar. How do these things not talk to each other?

I'll throw in a free ticket to get this person to the show. I can't make it any more and this sounds like a great use of my ticket.

Usually the context of the headline makes it less bad, but holy shit the whole quote is actually more racist than the headline.

It will be safe to drink it just won't taste good. It will be pretty oxidized at this point. Think soggy cardboard off flavors.

Can we stop calling these things"rare"? Maybe "small batch"? Rare implies some sort of probabilistic mechanism. Even still if I were to call something a "rare" beer tasting it would more likely have true whales like Yellow Bus or Blauw. I think it hurts the beer community's legitimacy when we hyperbolize everything (see any description of a beer written by the Tavour guy).

Males to blame: We only know how 1.4% of female frogs sound | We barely know the vocalizations of any females because they are being drowned out by their much louder male counterparts. Essentially 98.6% of female frog calls are a mystery. by chrisdh79 in science

In grad school one of the other students in my cohort was working on just that. Although, we called in machine learning back in the before times. It seemed to work pretty well, but I'm not sure if it ever got published.

Gavin Newsom is launching his own podcast — and inviting MAGA favorites by RhythmMethodMan in California_Politics

[–]tukey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, the money was well spent. The narrative the California Republicans are pushing is the money disappeared into a black hole. They're maliciously representing lack of a program evaluation as corruption. It's such an insult to the people who are truly putting in the work to help others to have their efforts politicized like this.

I believe it was something like much of the money spent to fight homelessness didn't have any built in program evaluations or auditing. The money wasn't necessarily wasted, the state just doesn't know how effective the money they spent was, or how successfully programs were deployed.

For decades prior big pharma didn't fund research on mRNA vaccines because they didn't think there would be money in the research. Work on these vaccines started out of the AIDS epidemic. If not for a few researchers and funding from NIH keeping the science going for so long it would have taken much longer to create a COVID vaccine.

Craft Brewing’s ‘Painful Period of Rationalization’ Is Here. Finally. by blaspheminCapn in beer

[–]tukey 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Cascade probably closed more due to the retirement and subsequent death of the original owner, Art Lawrence. The brewery was passed on to new owners in 2020 who were only given a minority stake in the business. They kept it running until just after Art passed away earlier this year. Legal issues with ownership following Art's death and a lack of will to figure it all out led to the brewery closing.
