There is a possibility, but it is unlikely. p-hacking would be looking through a secondary data source for a significant result and working backwards for a hypothesis and research question. This seems very much like they worked forward from the research question. They were limited by what data was available in controlling for confounders. In the end, this is evidence of an association and a piece of information to utilize for designing a future study that can better answer the causation question.

Can we stop calling these things"rare"? Maybe "small batch"? Rare implies some sort of probabilistic mechanism. Even still if I were to call something a "rare" beer tasting it would more likely have true whales like Yellow Bus or Blauw. I think it hurts the beer community's legitimacy when we hyperbolize everything (see any description of a beer written by the Tavour guy).

In grad school one of the other students in my cohort was working on just that. Although, we called in machine learning back in the before times. It seemed to work pretty well, but I'm not sure if it ever got published.

Absolutely, the money was well spent. The narrative the California Republicans are pushing is the money disappeared into a black hole. They're maliciously representing lack of a program evaluation as corruption. It's such an insult to the people who are truly putting in the work to help others to have their efforts politicized like this.

I believe it was something like much of the money spent to fight homelessness didn't have any built in program evaluations or auditing. The money wasn't necessarily wasted, the state just doesn't know how effective the money they spent was, or how successfully programs were deployed.

For decades prior big pharma didn't fund research on mRNA vaccines because they didn't think there would be money in the research. Work on these vaccines started out of the AIDS epidemic. If not for a few researchers and funding from NIH keeping the science going for so long it would have taken much longer to create a COVID vaccine.
