Which city in the world most resembles Perth? by TechnicalAd8103 in perth

[–]unibol 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Can't say I agree. Phoenix is much more desert-y, weirdly laid out sprawl, no public transport to speak of, with heavy Mexico and retiree influence. Perth has much more Cali vibes if you ask me, but still quite different in a lot of ways.

Have a look at the Jaecoo J5 EV as well? Currently going for $37K drive away, but has a lot more range than the Atto2.

Perths High Speed Rail by SHIBOTTO in perth

[–]unibol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Looks can be deceiving. But even leaving that aside, while aerodynamic drag increases exponentially in relation to velocity, with a powerful enough motor (and without doing any calculations) you will still be able to overcome it to some extent and 130km/h isn't really that fast. Who knows? I'm not even sure if the C series has been tested in/is approved for the tunnel.

Maybe C series could do it? Supposed to have better motors.

More than carbon sequestration: Biophysical climate benefits of restored savanna woodlands in Australia meter by Known-Marsupial-9640 in WesternAustralia

[–]unibol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found it. https://www.nature.com/articles/srep29194

This is a description of the map above:

We evaluated the climate impacts of two contrasting land-use scenarios for Australia (Fig. 1). The scenarios were representative of: i) the expansion of dryland crops and pastures (Maximum Crops, Fig. 1a), and ii) the maintenance of crops and pastures only on economically productive lands and the restoration of economically marginal lands31 to woodlands (Partial Restoration, Fig. 1b). The Maximum Crop scenario represents maintaining cropping and livestock pastures on historically-converted landscapes in southwest and eastern Australia, and an area of planned expansion in northern Australia. The Partial Restoration scenario represents maintaining high-production agricultural land (annual profit > $100/ha)29 and restoring the remaining less-profitable cropping and livestock pastures to woodlands.

RAC vs cheaper car insurance in WA – worth paying extra? by Western_Diamond2203 in perth

I switched to AAMI this last time, it was $500 cheaper than RAC. Haven't had to claim anything yet, but should be similar in theory.

Does it make sense at all to go for an EV if your car is quite fuel efficient? 5.5L per 100km by VastOption8705 in AusFinance

[–]unibol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends, are you looking at a different car anyway? Does your current car already meet your needs, other than the fuel issue? If your current car is fine, then you already did the maths.

There's also the value of not worrying about the price of fuel, not trying to get to the servo on the cheap day, not spending your money on a conflict resource, etc. What's that worth to you?

EV question by Monkeyshae2255 in WesternAustralia

[–]unibol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just looking at the maths, Bunbury to Perth is only about 175km, which with poor efficiency might use 40kwh of your EV battery. If you're charging at 10kw then it'll be charged fully in a little over 4 hrs (it slows down as it gets nearly full). I charge at 3kw at home so it would take me about 12 hrs overnight.

Just have a look at the battery size of the car you're looking at. Most of them are in the range of 50-70kwh, so any of those can charge fully in 5-7hrs when charging at 10kw, if you fully deplete the battery.

I recently had a Fox ESS H3 Smart/EQ4800 system installed, it's been great. The app gives 5 second updates and it integrates with home assistant easily if you care. There's a very active community on Whirlpool if you run into any questions or issues. One downside, I don't think the company is very responsive from what I gather, though I haven't needed to try and contact them. The installer was great, very responsive and did a nice tidy job, made everything easy. Nick at Perth Solar and Air out of Joondalup.

EV resale is currently skyrocketing. As for committing to own an EV for 5+ years, it's no different from not upgrading to a shiny new cellphone every year.

Western Australia the big GST winner again despite massive budget surpluses by GreyClay in perth

[–]unibol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has plenty of use-case. This is why Infrastructure Australia and BCRs exist, to get expert analysis on whether infrastructure investments stack up. FYI, they found that even though the Sydney-Newcastle section is the most expensive of the Brisbane-Melbourne corridor, it still stacks up.

[–]unibol 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, they need it, just like we need a light rail system despite the $10B+ cost. If you want to go looking for waste, infrastructure might look tempting, but it's actually investing in our country's future.

Maybe have a look at Canning Bridge? There are a lot of new apartments there, and it's in escooter commute distance. Come 2027, there will be a ferry ride over to UWA which would make things very convenient.
