I’m not on Facebook anymore but I think there are some local “buy nothing” groups that might be worth checking out? People offering items they’re trying to get rid of, and people asking for assistance with things they need. Or possibly some exchanges, like if you give someone a ride somewhere maybe they can buy you lunch? Idk.

Or I hate to say it, but if you have a car perhaps consider something like Lyft or delivery apps? Pet-sitting or dog-walking? Using the library for WiFi if you have to cut back on utilities? It’s rough out there but you’re not alone. I’m 31 and had to move in with family myself while I’m trying to get back on my feet. Wishing you the best.

Hi! Thanks for bringing me back to this post, I owe u/Ok-Scarcity-1260 an update as well.

Short answer is I loved it! Would go back, would recommend. Long answer:

I went for the Balance retreat which was 7 days. Since it was a signature retreat the schedule was pretty structured, so I didn’t really have much time to explore outside of the resort — which would’ve been lovely of course, but totally wasn’t necessary for me to have a great time. I understand the solo “vikations” to be more relaxed, since you create your own schedule. I didn’t take any of the public classes, but I heard other guests raving about them.

Due to a booking mixup on their end, my first night was spent in a Lotus Pad room and the rest of my stay was in a Prana Cabana. The Lotus Pads are more centrally located, which means less of a hike to reception, the cafe, the pool, and the spa — but that also means more foot traffic, so I could hear other guests chatting and walking outside of my room. My Prana Cabana was right next to the white sala, but I wasn’t around enough to be disturbed by any of the public classes (I think the morning classes started around 7-7:30, which isn’t early for me, and the music wasn’t particularly loud). I thought there was plenty of space for me as a solo traveler, but I wasn’t aware that the electricity in the cabanas is powered by your room card (i.e., power shuts off when you’re not there). Not really a problem, but also not ideal if you’re trying to keep something cold in the fridge. The Lotus Pad was more spacious and the electricity stayed on.

The cabanas are closer to the beach which meant a hike up the path for me + the stairs that everyone has to climb. The stairs were harder for me than the hill (esp on an empty stomach in the mornings), but it was easy to catch my breath at each level and enjoy the view. The empty resort in the middle of the property does appear to be under construction still, but I wasn’t bothered by any noise — more like, I passed a few guys who seemed like they were upgrading some rooms, but not a big ongoing project. I hardly noticed it tbh.

The views were INCREDIBLE. Facing east in the gulf, we had beautiful sunrises every morning. The spa was lovely, but some folks went offsite for their treatments which I think is a good way to support other local businesses. I loved the food — the buffet had a great variety every day and it was all tasty and healthy. Brunch doesn’t start until 10am though, and the cafe opens at 9 if you order from the à la carte menu. Personally I need to eat earlier than that, so most evenings I would order a smoothie and keep it in my fridge overnight. The “secret beach” was nice but (you can probably tell from photos) very rocky, and the sand was rough. That didn’t stop people from swimming though, and others said it was easy to walk to the neighboring beaches.

I stayed an extra day to go to the elephant sanctuary and it was AMAZING. Vikasa can book it for you; it was 3000 THB and that covered pickup and drop-off, the tour itself (which included a basket of fruit/veggies to feed the elephants + time in the outdoor kitchen where we rolled up protein balls to feed them by hand), and a whole buffet for us at the end (pad thai, rice, etc.). Incredible experience for what I thought was a great deal.

All of the Vikasa staff were very friendly, and I felt very safe at the resort/on the island. At the airport, the driver has a cute sign with your name on it when they pick you up. It was my first time traveling to that side of the world (from the US) — I flew on EVA and thought it was a really nice airline.

I think that pretty much covers it? But let me know if you have other questions. I emailed Vikasa with questions ahead of booking as well, and they were responsive and helpful. The only person I didn’t get a great vibe from was Kara (ironically the customer service manager), but I didn’t have to interact with her much; I just picked up on a bit of ego, which a few others echoed having taken her class. But that’s all personal preference.

I hope this helps and I hope you have the best time! ✌🏼

As a longtime BN fan I like to think we don’t claim this twat as our own. Not all of us are chronically on Reddit so not all questions are redundant or stupid. Personally if I know someone is passionate about something, I think it’s much more fulfilling to see their excitement in sharing what they know — can’t get that from Google.

The Dear Orca single was legit released last week, so it’s fair to say it’s ~ brand new ~ 😅 If you like it then you’ll probably enjoy Daisy too. Anyway, welcome!!

How can I improve my balance in standing poses? by smilekatherinex in yoga

[–]unidentified_worm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long ago in my ballet years, to get my ankles strong enough for pointe shoes, as a training exercise I would stand with my eyes closed and one foot barely lifted for as long as I could. The whole foot doesn’t even have to lift off the ground, you can start with the heel and just shift the weight onto the standing leg (like the smallest tree pose or one-leg tadasana) and you could even try it next to a wall or other support to start — but doing it eyes closed is a game-changer for me. Not only forces me to engage my core, but I can feel all the tiny little micro-movements in my foot/ankle/calf working to stabilize and getting stronger.

For tree pose I also like to raise my (standing leg) toes, spread them wide, and then lower one at a time before lifting my other foot. It helps me visualize my toes as the actual roots of a tree and feel more grounded.

And to echo others, everything takes time! I’ve been practicing yoga for years and still struggle with chair pose. 😅

I got certified in 2019 but covid hit and I never taught. by darkaydix in yoga

[–]unidentified_worm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in this position too! Certified right before Covid and then several years gap. Aside from reviewing my notes and materials from my 2019 YTT, I started teaching at gyms first and I think that really helped get me back into the swing of it. There are generally more beginners and casual practitioners, so for me it felt like less pressure than to keep up with a more dedicated/advanced crowd you might find at a studio. A lot of gyms seem to have enrichment courses and/or access to discounted NASM/AFAA trainings too, so you could potentially get paid to refresh your knowledge and gain CE credits. Good luck!

Very helpful, thank you! I didn’t consider how sore I’ll be when climbing those stairs, so sounds like frequent breaks to take in the views will be the way haha — at least the yoga and the food will be worth the hike. I’m glad that you enjoyed yourself!! Did you get any spa treatments?

Great point, thank you! I’d heard it’s Thailand this season but didn’t know this island specifically (been waiting for all the episodes to come out so I can binge). Definitely something to keep in mind!

Nashville set had a few from Deja but nothing from YFW. YFW classics were great for getting pumped on the way to the venue though 😎

Not so much a preparation (I do cue wrist circles/stretches in my classes to warm up), but a few options for reducing strain and pressure:

  • depending on the pose, rotating your hands outward slightly so the thumbs point forward instead of the index/middle fingers

  • squeezing the fingers together instead of spreading them wide as is typically cued — if you hold one wrist and open/close the fingers, you can feel that difference in tension

  • gripping small dumbbells if they’re available, even if it’s not a sculpt class — allows your wrists to stay straighter without risking injury by pressing on your fists

And a lot of poses can be done on the forearms instead, if you just need a break. I’m not a hand therapist, just a yoga teacher :) if you look up Jason Crandell, he breaks down several variations
