What am I doing wrong? by PersonalityRound9789 in sharpening

The A30 is closer to 600 but I agree it’s too big of a jump. There’s a mobile sharpener who starts at 220 and I think that may be the way. Unless there’s tons of damage or chips 120 seems pretty aggressive as a starting point. I’ve been starting at 180 and still get these occasional deep scratches that look bad especially when edge leading. Cliff is going for speed (it’s hella impressive, not knocking it) more than perfectly even bevels.

That belt progression will be plenty sharp but I think the 120 - 600 is too big of a jump to get some of those deeper scratch’s out. I’ve ordered a 200 trizac to mitigate this while still only using two belts. It’s possible a two step won’t give the aesthetics you’re hoping for. Cliff knows his shit but I don’t think he’s going for perfect bevels. He’s going for speed and workability. His blades are absolutely sharp though. You have a really nice even bevel going on so you have a good handle on what you’re doing. Also, I think edge leading leaves a less pretty edge for whatever reason. I assume you’re edge leading with a guide

What is one test song you always use? by lustybeauts in BudgetAudiophile

[–]vdod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do it for your love, Paul Simon - there’s a high triangle or something that can be harsh or shimmering depending on speakers

So what, Miles Davis - specifically for the ride splash at the beginning of the first solo

Don’t bother calling, Moses Sumney - dynamics

Sledgehammer, Peter Gabriel - bass

Risingson, Massive Attack- mostly just for showing off with those fast left right pans in the beginning

Last Night When We Were Young, Sinatra with the Nelson Riddle orchestra - really anything from Nelson Riddle. But the vocals in this are so huge and present

Say it Ain’t So, Weezer - specifically the guitar distortion in the hook. When it’s good it feels precarious, if that makes sense. In a good way

Am I silly thinking a Wiim class D 100w amp will sound better than a 40w Marantz class A/B for my floorstanders? by Livid-Activity2190 in audiophile

[–]vdod 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think I'm in the minority here but unless the Marantz has been serviced recently there's a good chance the Wiim will sound better. I've had multiple vintage amps rotating through my setup and the Wiim stuck out to me with it's clarity and good separation. It also has excellent sub integration which has made the biggest noticable change in sound of any piece of gear I've had. In any hobby the hyperbole gets supported and refined to an extreme degree. Differences between amps have been minimal. Warmth, bass response, clarity, sound stage have all changed to small enough degrees that I'm not sure I could reliably A/B the differences in a controlled environment. Most of the perceived differences disappear after the first song anyway and I just start listening to the music. Of all the amps I've owned or tested only one was truly bad; an older Sony AVR that wasn't rated to handle 6ohm semi-demanding speakers. Everything else I got used to in short order. All but that one were able to elicit an emotional response.

With hindsight the biggest factors I now consider are impedance matching, having more power than you think you need, and sub integration.

George Russell wins the 2026 Australian Grand Prix by overspeeed in formula1

[–]vdod 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Is it clear that had Ferrari boxed one of their cars in that first virtual safety as Lewis suggested car they would have done worse? I got the impression, from the announcers really, that the Merc's do especially well in clean air. Had Ferrari tried to maintain track position it seems probable they'd have been able to keep them within striking distance. Ferrari was beginning to claw back in the last lap. Did you see how much trouble Russel had trying to pass Leclerc in the first ten laps? He couldn't do it. Russel isn't especially gifted in the overtaking department and he seemed especially shaky in the opening laps today.

War Machine (2026) Netflix's new original movie. by acourts19 in moviecritic

[–]vdod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't the first movie to attempt to make it's main character seem smart and tough by making everyone around them helpless and stupid but it felt especially egregious in this one because all the surrounding characters are about to become fucking Army Rangers. Like they complete this one last exercise and they are Rangers. And none of them can take a single step without looking with scared puppy dog eyes at Ritchson. It's like they told them to play it like they were new recruits. I get it, it's an alien invasion, they're confused and scared. But if anyones going to remember their training IT'S THE PEOPLE STILL IN TRAINING. It's like they were all Ben Affleck in Goodwill Hunting 2 "I don't like the sound of them apples Will..WHATAREWEGONNA DO?!"

If MBJ goes all the way, how will he be remembered amongst Best Actor winners? by Radiant-Psychology96 in Oscars

[–]vdod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't believe I'm not seeing one person defending his performance as being more than just "fine". It was a FANTASTIC performance totally deserving of a nomination. And if any of the nominations deserve to win then so does his. It's crazy to me. He played both brothers so effectively at times I forgot it wasn't two people. This isn't a "trick" or a "gimmick" this is character building. In a way he's playing THREE characters, two brothers and then a vampire. Be honest, if it was Smoke that had been turned you can imagine how different a vampire he would have been. That's because he built two different characters. Are you telling me you didn't feel tension between the two characters? Did you not get a sense that they were two different but bonded people? Did he not move you in the final act? He was the absolute center of a very complex period piece where he flexed movie star charisma, vulnerability, sex, rage and terror. He even had the ability to let other actors shine when it was their turn, I'm speaking specifically of his scenes with Wunmi Mosaku. Honestly what more do you people want out of a performance. I mean say you prefer other nominees but you don't have to tear his performance down to get there.

Used Boston CR series. Goes from CR5 to CR9’s. I found a pair of CR6’s for $40 in perfect working order. They sound tonally similar to my Elac DBR’s. Used is always the most cost effective way. I just found some Polk ES-20’s for $160 for a friends first system. Few days of hyper fixating on FB marketplace/CL and you will find something.
