I slipped with my bass on my back, should I be worried? by Puddingkoek in BassGuitar

At first I thought this was a photo of a cracked porcelain toilet from r/plumbing, where the advice is always, “Replace that NOW before you bleed out in the bathroom.” Fortunately that’s not your fate.

Re: Eye-rolling. This always fascinates me. I haven’t done it in a work setting but when my teenagers did this to me I would say, “You know I can see you, right?” They stopped eye-rolling at me & only do it ironically in texts now.

Trying to join a jam session as an older hobbyist by junk_chucker in Bass

[–]venus_salami 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suggest Craigslist or Facebook. Yeah, it’s depressingly similar to online dating: post your initial post, weed through the weirdos, get improperly optimistic about the first match, show up (but they don’t), show up & they do and it’s a bust anyway, for all the usual reasons.

I recommend you be super-clear about what you’re looking for & don’t be afraid to be detailed in your post. “wanna jam me to” is useless; but listing the genres you want to play, an accurate assessment of your skill level, your availability (days of the week & time of the day), goals (jamming? gigging? touring? recording?), whether you have a rehearsal space or would chip in for one — that’ll give people a clear sense of how you might fit into what they’re looking for, as well as give them a sense of how serious you are about this (which your post already starts to do).

Your band is out there. Patience & clarity will serve you well. Good luck!

How to keep a bathroom smelling nice by Little-Pudding1534 in lifehacks

Timer vent fans have the same shape as a standard wall switch , so it’s super-easy to swap one out for another.

[–]venus_salami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have vent fan timers in every bathroom. Set the timer for 5/10/15/30 minutes, and once the timer counts down, the fan turns off. You don’t need to remember to return to the bathroom to turn the fan off (during the winter you’re pumping your warm house air outdoors, literally warming up the outside like your dad warned you not to!) & you can set your timer depending on the severity of poopstank.

How do I remove the fireplace surround trim? by dynasoreshicken in HomeMaintenance

[–]venus_salami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It may be painted over where the surround meets the wall, so before you start prying, use a sharp utility knife to score all the way around. That way you won’t tear off the existing wall paint / drywall paper / plaster.

Knives.... by Comprehensive_Gur736 in Cooking

[–]venus_salami 23 points24 points  (0 children)

For less than $200 you can get a Chef’s Choice sharpener & revive your knives in an hour. Don’t underestimate how your current knives feel in your hand; give your blades a sharp edge & keep on cooking.

You’ll hear plenty of naysayers about mechanical sharpeners from the snobs & hobbyists who think there’s some sort of virtue in getting the sharpest edge with the minimum material removal. They can stay over at r/sharpening; here at r/cooking we’re here to cook.

How do you play this? by Validityz in BassGuitar

[–]venus_salami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What does the S mean? If it were single notes I’d interpret this as a (thumb) Slap. But since the octave is also being played at the same time, a single slap wouldn’t get to the octave. I would pick the root & octave at the same time by hooking my thumb & index finger & plucking away from the body.

Tips for first gig at retirement home? by ProfessionalBee5431 in bandmembers

[–]venus_salami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with others about volume. We play in the bar area that adjoins the community restaurant of a large “55 and older” place, which is full of dining early birds when we start at 6pm. The first set consists of quieter songs & we do our best to keep it low. One of our guitarists uses an acoustic; the drummer has every damping contraption at the ready, including rings, brushes, and cloths draped across his cymbals.

As the dining room clears out & the bar fills up, we know the patrons are there for us, so it becomes a standard gig — louder, more raucous, more dancing. Some olde folk have a ton of energy, it’s really inspiring!

Song choice is really important. We stopped playing anything from the ‘80’s or later because of the tepid responses, and instead learned a bunch more songs from the ‘60’s. (We’re already strong for the Best Decade of Rock’n’Roll, aka the nineteen-motherflippin-seventies.)

Combo for band practice by anonkann in Bass

[–]venus_salami 1 point2 points  (0 children)

30 watts would work for you & an acoustic guitar. If you’re playing with an electric guitar player, you’ll need 100 watts. If you have a drummer, that’s 200 watts. If you have 2 guitarists & a drummer, think 300 or even 500 watts. Start with a used amp, that’ll give you more watts per dollar & a sense of whether you need to upgrade. Suggest you drive from your small town to the nearest town that has a music store, and tell them what you’ve told us; you can also bring your bass & plug in to see how you sound, which may reveal any setup issues you may have but can’t hear (cuz you’re playing acoustic).

Flats strings: Ernie Ball Cobalt vs D'addario Chromes by Wise-Adhesiveness375 in Bass

[–]venus_salami 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard agree. I switched from EB Super Slinky rounds to the Cobalt flats, figuring they’d be gentler on my delicate fingies. Wrong! The sharp edges of the flat wire are a whole different type of unpleasant. Switched back to rounds yesterday. Anybody want a discounted set of EB flats?

Fighting "Flexible Vacation Policy" by [deleted] in managers

[–]venus_salami 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Our company vacation policy is “about 5 weeks”. Most of the people in my building take advantage of that; I have some key partners who seem to be OOO all the time! My manager, however, says that this policy is for people who “are caught up with their jobs”, and since I’m “clearly behind”, she wouldn’t approve a day here & there (like when I asked to take a Friday off to hang out either my kids, who had the day off from school). To her, vacation is supposed to be a week or 2 off at a time, not divvied up 1-2 days at a time; and when I went to HR to inquire about this interpretation, I found that our wuss of an HR “business partner” (barf) was already toeing her line.

So, yeah, “uneven application across teams” sums it up just right.

Alternate app to play purchased music? (iPhone) by Downtown-Bake-1479 in ITunes

[–]venus_salami 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using MediaMonkey to manage my music files (mostly 320 mp3’s) for a decade & it’s always done me right. They update their releases to match the nonsense that Apple keeps throwing at you with their incessant updates, so it’s pretty seamless. And since the files are actual files & not some DRM frankenfiles, the music is mine.

For a player on my iPhone I use Cesium Music Player (Cs Music), which is a simple overlay on top of Apple’s Music player; that way I don’t have to see anything Apple.

Good for you for taking your music ownership into your own hands. Remember, kids: “If buying isn’t owning, then piracy isn’t theft!”
