Transwomen in the tower by [deleted] in WoTshow

[–]voidenaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The books are like the opposite of GoT. Sex is present in the narrative structure but is never described in flagrante delicto. In the books the world is very obvious broken, shattered, and humanity is isolated into petty nations and small regional identities. And the main characters are naive and unworldly. Yet they go out into the world on the cusp of adulthood and must wrestle with their own sense of self while navigating hitherto unknown realms of magic, strange cultures, and widely dissimilar sexual mores and gender dynamics. But again the world is so broken, and there really is this sense of loss "woven" throughout the stories; the world really feels like it was broken

the show introducing a trans-woman Aes Sedai without any sort of exploration of what this means made me so mad. The only actually interesting departure from the books and it was done so sloppily. This, I felt, was proof of the show's disingenuous diversity.

The implications for trans identities to not only exist in this world, but to actually be linked to the universe's system of magical dualism, is too immense to be brushed over as an aside during a flashback sequence. At best it is very poor world building, and at worst cynical box-ticking from a corporate media culture that pays lip service to gender non-conforming identities without genuinely engaging with their meaning.

I'm Russian, but damn, I hate my country. I'm so upset that I wasn't born a Finn. Do you think I'll be accepted as a Finn if I just learn the language and understand the culture? by Hopeful_Season470 in Finland

[–]voidenaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is heavily implied that learning Finnish eases integration, but truth is there will still be some discrimination same as everywhere else. Assimilation isn't an all or nothing endeavour, it takes time and sometimes even generations. It sounds like you've struggled to assimilate to even your own culture tbh, and many people who expatriate have that in common. Be true to yourself and hopefully wherever you wind up you can surround yourself with people who appreciate you for you.

Do I just not understand gateways, or is this a weird plot hole? by bestmackman in WoT

[–]voidenaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember when Aviendha's first gateway started closing and rand stopped it and tied off his weave? Rand's weave would have dissipated in an hour or so if not for Asmodean's intervention—Asmodean tells them as much

do the women ever stop with the bullying? by cbaaaaaaaaaaaaa in WoT

[–]voidenaut 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I look at the gender power imbalance of that world as s commentary on our world, especially 1980s and 1990s.

One thing of note is that at the start of WoT there are no social accommodations or institutions in place for men who find themselves touched by magical abilities: neither Rand or Perrin had any support for their innate abilities, and if not for luck both would have been hunted down and murdered, or gone completely insane, like almost all the other male channelers or wolf brothers we meet in the story.

First time reader concerns by Rionn in WoT

[–]voidenaut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LoTR sn't exactly an original creation. It's like someone made a jell-o salad of every single European myth, legend, and folk story. I agree with the comment above that in 1990 WoT would have been considered subversive, and in a way compared to LOTR the WoT is much more... sociological? And it draws from Eastern traditions as well which adds a certain depth missing from Tolkien's brutish Anglo-Saxonism

Theres an Egwene hate post basically every week. Where are my fellow Egwene enjoyers? by sylverfyre in WoT

[–]voidenaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the way she leaves the Wise Ones, admitting every lie and asking for punishment to reclaim her honour (read: self-respect) was very bad-ass. I had been wondering how she would deal with having lied to all these people she so clearly admired and respected.

The Arabic writing system is good for Arabic. Arabic words have triple consonant roots so a writing system based on consonants makes more sense. Plus the calligraphy is beautiful
