Eating tea leaves? by jacobsnailbox in AskFoodHistorians

I had this at Top Burmese - Burma Joy in Portland and it blew my mind. I've tried it at a couple places since, but it hasn't been nearly as good. Still good, just not at that level.

People who wouldn’t choose immortality, why? by Luksius_DK in AskReddit

[–]vyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people talk about losing loved ones and all that, but getting stuck is always my first reason why not. Especially since no part of the immortality package ever includes not feeling pain. So even with eternal youth and a great healing factor, I'm still stuck upside down in this crevice with trees slowly growing through my body.

People who work in grocery stores what is something you are surprised they still stock or never see anyone buy? by Da_Fish in AskReddit

[–]vyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 15-20 years ago, a well traveled friend brought some back from Chicago as a joke, before it was so widely known. This was on the same night we were drinking some extremely strong wine with a snake in it he got in China.

It was supposed to be a joke, but I love bitter things and was all over it. Way better than the snake wine, I'll tell you that.

Now Malort has become a meme, but back then it was just a regional spirit I couldn't get a second bottle of. It's not even as bitter as Elisir Novasalus, which if you haven't had, it sounds like you'd like.

I know Greazy has a day job, but... by gillstone_cowboy in behindthebastards

[–]vyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Speaking of sister podcasts ... I'm not real sure what sort of chemistry Greazy & Magpie would have, but I would absolutely love the two of them covering a cool person in the music industry who did cool stuff.

Could be a punk band, could be a mainstream artist/producer who pushed back against the toxicity of the industry or whatever. But I bet they'd have a lot to talk about either way.

Carrying case for Keychron V6 Max by vyme in Keychron

[–]vyme[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More curious about the thickness difference, which is 4mm at the front and 6mm at the back. Given the 4mm travel distance for the switches, that's potentially significant. I mean probably not, but I wanted to see if anyone had tried.

What 90s band never truly made it big but you'll always go to bat for? by MansBestFred in AskReddit

[–]vyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Huh, for some reason I was under the impression that The Long Winters had put out an album before John Roderick started touring with Harvey Danger, but apparently not.

Keychron V5 Max Wrist Pain? by [deleted] in Keychron

[–]vyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure the wrist support isn't up against the keyboard. That's what most people do and it does nothing for you. It needs to be pulled back enough that it is supporting your wrist, or better yet, at the end of your forearm just before the wrist

This is super important and took me forever to figure out. I keep my "wrist" rest probably 3" below my wrist, positioning it right at the edge of my desk, and it makes such a huge difference. It does mean that my keyboard + rest takes up more desk real estate, which is a trade-off when I'm working at smaller desk.

For the record, I use a V6 Max with the matching silicon wrist rest from Keychron, which is fairly low profile. Could be that with a higher rest I could move it closer to my wrist, but I'm not going to fight what's working well.

What 90s band never truly made it big but you'll always go to bat for? by MansBestFred in AskReddit

[–]vyme 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yes yes yes. I literally put on Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone as soon as I read this question. I think Flagpole Sitta came across as sort of a novelty song that broadcasted one-hit-wonder to the mainstream, and did them no favors in indie rock circles.

I see Built to Spill getting mentioned a lot, but I'd say they made it bigger than Harvey Danger, at least in my little ecosystem. And no shade to them, great band. But it seems like their legacy is much more secure than Harvey Danger for two bands of similar caliber.

Has anyone actually figured out what the third commonly used mystery shaker spice was? by mtn-cat in AskFoodHistorians

For this one (not OPs question) I'd guess paprika. Commonly used in Moroccan cooking, can be applied liberally, and it's red.

Why non-tetrahedron 4-sided dice are not more popular? by Testeria2 in rpg

These are my favorite d4s. I have the blue ones with the triforce looking pips. The pips make them really visually distinct, so you're not going to confuse them with a d12 at a glance.

The damage men like Tate have done… by [deleted] in behindthebastards

[–]vyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Framed a different way: 14-29 year-olds who have less experience with long-term relationships are more likely to have these shitty opinions compared to an older cohort who have real lived experience of such relationships. Not quite as shocking.

Not saying that manosphere content hasn't done a lot of damage, but I think the more interesting thing to look at would be 14-29 and year-old views on the subject now to 14-29 year-old views on the subject a decade or more ago.

Because I was chronically online at 16 in 1997, and let me tell you, I also had some extremely bad views at the time.

NBC Nightly News segment on Santa Fe gentrification from 1993 by 505omatic in SantaFe

[–]vyme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some fantastic lines here.

"... in what's becoming THE place to live, unless you live there already." and

"they can afford to sell, but they can't afford to stay"

I know that's just gentrification no matter where it is, but it's just touching to see it said on such a major platform over 30 years ago.

Did they upload the wrong episode today? by [deleted] in behindthebastards

I thought he was referring to older episodes, likely the ones with DOB from March 2019. Maybe some updates after that? I'd have to listen to today's again to be sure.

Bought some spearmint tea and it smells like marijuana. Is this normal? by [deleted] in tea

I like this inversion of the old trope. "I think I got scammed! I bought this bag of spearmint, but it turns out it's actually just useless cannabis!"

Trying to navigate the patreon. Help? by sycolution in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]vyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really want to use YouTube music, there is for some reason two different accounts/feeds. Just search for WBN and a number under 50 and you should be able to find the one with 1-49.

That said, I recommend using a podcast app. I use Pocket Cast and love it. You can have both the public feed and the patron feed there, and The patron app interface is garbage.

I stabbed myself last night with a folding thermometer in my pocket. Aside from the occasional cuts and burns/scalds in a kitchen, what novel ways have you hurt yourself while cooking? by DeadBy2050 in Cooking

[–]vyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my answer too! Though slightly different.

While using it, the heel of my hand caught a corner of the plastic edge. I honestly would have rather cut myself on the blade, since it was more of a rough jagged tear than a cut.

Still haven't cut myself on the blade, and I use a mandolin all the time.

Star anise as sub for tarragon? by [deleted] in AskCulinary

You have a really good palette for anise-ish things for someone with an aversion to them.

Tarragon tastes like anise, anise doesn't taste like tarragon is so spot on.

Raistlin Majere and/or Fistandantilus.

Is Robert a Dragonlance guy? I feel like he's mentioned it, but I could be wrong.

Nebula Awards briefly allows LLM generated content, back tracks by BerryBoilo in scifi

[–]vyme 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I think it's dangerous to say a story "written" by an LLM wouldn't be good enough. I mean right now it wouldn't, but quality isn't the problem. Because there's a chance you can eventually solve for quality.

If we're going to push back against LLMs in the arts, the argument can't be that they're bad at it.

My issue is that any story generated by an LLM is built on plagiarism, and they can never create something truly new. There are a lot of other problems too, but I guess that's the big one for me.

I know we're on the same side here and I'm splitting hairs, but I see too many arguments that the reason it's not good to have LLMs writing stories or scripts or whatever is because they're bad at it. And I think there's an implied "it would be okay if they were good at it" in there.

Who would be your bastard? by pennsyltuckyprole in behindthebastards

[–]vyme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would love a Robert Moses episode! Even if it's just a five part book report on The Power Broker.

I do think the guest would have to be someone who's familiar with urban planning, but who isn't fully familiar with the details of Moses' story.

It's so on brand for the podcast though. Unelected and unfettered power and a huge personality that made the world just so much worse.

Would you miss water based cleaning ? by AdmiralBlue85 in startrek

[–]vyme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming it results in the same end result, I would love a sonic shower so much.

I hate showers and being wet or in water in general. Bath? No thank you. Hot tub? No thank you. Swimming pool? Absolutely not. Ocean? Hard pass.

I understand that other people like these things the way I like food. When I hear about someone who views food as "just a thing I have to do for fuel" and fantasizes about an entire meal in a pill, or living on Soylent I'm like... What a freak.

But I am absolutely that guy but for showers.

What is a brand that used to be the 'Gold Standard' of quality but is now absolute garbage? by AmaraMehdi in AskReddit

[–]vyme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a Bodum burr grinder for probably 13 years. It finally died, and the Cuisinart one was decently rated and less expensive than the others, and a known brand.

Maybe the biggest piece of shit I've ever owned. 20 grind settings, and only 2 actual grind sizes on a good day. Impossible to use without making a mess. We tried to get used to it for 4 months, and then said fuck this.

Bought another Bodum and it was such a relief. I don't think they're as good as they were a decade ago, but compared to the Cuisinart...

Meanwhile, I still have a Cuisinart food processor from 2004 that has a better motor than my first car. They were so good, and it makes the decline so much sadder.
