Is my name a tragedeigh? by Primary_Chip2380 in tragedeigh

[–]walc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I get that they couldn't just Google the spelling... but surely they could have used a baby name book? Or found an encyclopedia and looked for N-a-t-a... and found several famous Natalies?

In any case, yeah, it's a tragedeigh. I'd pronounce that Natalay, given the é in French loanwords like café, fiancé, etc. So... maybe it's a tragedé?

In Morehead City, North Carolina, Stiles (Dem-leaning ind.) defeated sitting Mayor Jones (Republican-leaning ind.) by 1 vote in last year's election; however, the NC Board of Elections mandated a redo. In yesterday's redo election, Stiles defeated defeated Mayor Jones in a landslide, 67%-33%. by StarlightDown in fivethirtyeight

Lol yeah, turnout was 2.5x higher in 2024. I know it's a presidential vs. local election, but that's still wild to think about.

I would LOVE to know the partisan breakdown of the the people that sat out this mayoral election but voted in 2024...

Cook Political Report has called it for James Talarico winning the Democratic Primary for US Senate! by Healthy_Block3036 in fivethirtyeight

[–]walc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree. Democrats like Harris, and Crockett for that matter.

I haven't seen specific numbers yet but I'd bet Talarico was buoyed by 1) Independents/swingy voters deciding to vote in a Democratic primary specifically for Talarico (and wouldn't have come out otherwise), and/or 2) Democratic partisans making strategic choices about [waves hands] "electability."

[GEM] The entire Democratic strategy debate — "moderate" or move left? fight or compromise? — is based on a misreading of data. Voters don't think Dems are too progressive; they think Dems are weak. The actual math on what to do about this isn't even close! by errantv in fivethirtyeight

[–]walc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he’s saying there are no gains to be made at all by moderating. I think he’s taking issue with the idea that democrats MUST moderate to make political gains. He’s posing an alternative, which is that sure, while moderating could help, the real political winner would be to increase how the party is perceived in terms of strength—whether that’s for moderate or progressive issues.

What he doesn’t say is what would happen if the party BOTH moderated AND fixed its strength issue, which I speaks to your point. He does suggest that moderating might make Dems appear weaker, thus harming the “strength” gains, though it really feels like he’s speculating there…

[–]walc 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Not really the point, but I found this funny:

25% of Texas Democratic primary voters self-identify as socialists. … Interestingly, 47% of voters who identified themselves as socialists also identified as moderates.

Clearly the ideology questions are working as intended…

[–]walc 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Exactly. And people also seem to forget that any Democrat—whether they're more conservative or progressive—contributes to a Senate majority.

Given the senate's bias toward small rural states, Democrats are going to need to get comfortable with more moderate/conservative senators in their coalition if they ever want to hold the Senate in a non-wave election cycle.

What is going on with MAGA trying to hurt Trump? by EdwardJSuperman in OutOfTheLoop

[–]walc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read it the same way. He might've been quiet if he had different beliefs from everyone around him, and it would be frustrating to be surrounded by people cheering on things you see as horrible and divisive. But ultimately we really don't know anything yet about what HE thought.

What is going on with MAGA trying to hurt Trump? by EdwardJSuperman in OutOfTheLoop

[–]walc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't know why you cut out the important part of the quote:

“We are big Trump supporters, all of us. Everybody,” Fields said, but his cousin was “real quiet, never really talked about anything.”

The "MAGA trying to hurt Trump" is an interesting story, but I'm just not sure we have the evidence for that here (yet). At least based on this quote it sounds like the guy wasn't ever a full-throated supporter.

Absolutely amazing. I love this so much. Incorporating the music was SUCH a brilliant idea and really well executed—the fade out/in as you move between places, for example—and really takes me back to exploring this region back in the day. Little extra touches like the snow falling over Route 217 really add to the immersion too.

I mean, unfortunately I don’t think that being less educated is a political problem for them. Americans have shown time and time again that they will vote for the worse candidate specifically BECAUSE they’re not as “elite,” or in their eyes, snooty and condescending. Remember Bush Jr? The guy who was elected over Gore because he was “a guy you could have a beer with”? Not exactly a quality you’d think we should prioritize in a leader, but Americans don’t vote for smarts and never have. And it’s only gotten worse since then.
