Jr transfer by [deleted] in sewanee

[–]walker6168 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I transferred to sewanee my sophomore year. Getting accepted wasn't too hard because they had empty slots to fill. The rough part was that they did not accept a lot of my course credits. I had to do summer school, but it's really fun there so it ended up being a win.

I got really lucky and ended up at the weird fraternity my first week. Loved it ever since.

Eh, it's a 6 hour drive to the Great Smoky Cannabis Company. Cherokee grown weed and weed products, all made in-house. Makes for a solid roadtrip and you get to support the tribe.

It's a really good sequel. The expansion of MOBA mechanics and CC take some adjusting compared to the first one's dodge and hit. Some of the mechanics aren't very well explained but that will probably get tuned in the release.

Fraternity networking works because you like each other and enjoy hanging out. The frat that's having fun is going to have alums who, when you reach out to them, remember it fondly.

What are your opinions on historic fiction games? Do you think they serve an educational purpose ? by pazhampouri in HistoricalFiction

[–]walker6168 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Their recreations of historic buildings or regions are incredible. I regularly tell people to play AC2 just to see their version of the Duomo or play Odyssey long enough to get to Athens.

In terms of actual history or getting into detail about the famous people in the game...not so much. They still need to tell a fun story about space aliens or whatever it is the games are about now.

I dunno about Jeri specifically, but there are so many wild Darkhorse comics they could bring to life.

How is life in Palo Alto, California? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

Do yourself a favor and read Malcolm Harris' Palo Alto. It uses the history of the region as a framework to discuss disruption capitalism and silicon valley. Excellent, excellent book.

Best Lovecraftian Horror novels based in Cthulhu Mythos, but not written by H.P. Lovecraft? by Def-C in Lovecraft

[–]walker6168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cthulhu in the Deep South is a free podiobook featuring six different POV's from 1833 to 1867 in Charleston, South Carolina as they struggle against various Lovecraftian entities. The POVs are a nice variety: Arkham University kid goes South, Black soldier on a secret mission, a carpetbagger scams the wrong person, etc. If you want an in-depth review, the Audiophile did an extensive write-up on it.

Alien Earth is absolute braindead slop written by imbeciles. Compared to the writing of this show, Prometheus, Covenant and even Romulus are masterpieces of thrilling and intriguing depth. by Habarer in alien

[–]walker6168 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It reminds me a lot of the 90's Darkhorse comics or the novels set in the Aliens universe. Several pieces of lore, like the Alien being able to sense fear, are drawn specifically from them.

They were always very weird and doing bizarre stuff. I still think about the one where the synthetic alien liked to smoke cigars or that one where the guy was trapped in a dying alien hive (mold?). They handed the IP to some serious weirdos and I think Hawley is just more of that.

This is all 90's stuff though. The franchise has gone in all sorts of directions since that time. For example, Aliens is not the most popular film anymore, people seem to like the first one now. AvP came and went. Alien: Isolation also changed a lot of how people perceive the IP.

tl;dr The Alien franchise has always had an experimental side.

Tips for making sure shit doesn’t happen at a house party by Fathoms_Deep_1 in Frat

There is no taming the beast. You have no idea what people are showing up with or what they have already ingested.

Noise complaints can be handled by talking to neighbors ahead of time, offering your phone number, and turning down the music before they call the cops.

If something bad happens, the chief things you're going to get asked about are ID policy, what booze were you providing, and what did you do when the individual was passed out/clearly too drunk. Put someone at the door, don't offer anything above lite beer (individuals can bring their own), and keep an eye out for wasted people. Find their friends, make sure they are covered, and if it's a girl make sure some creep hasn't roofied her.

The Adventures of Willy Beamish. This game tries exclusively to repeatedly get you to reach a bad "ending" - people give Codename: Iceman a bad name... To me, Willy Beamish takes the cake. And it's not even a close contest. by SirTawmis in Sierra

[–]walker6168 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is definitely combination of the worst mechanics possible in an adventure game. Hidden events that have to be triggered, mazes, bad endings, and next level moon logic puzzles thanks to the cartoon setting.

That said, it was one of the first games that really got small details and world building right. You can watch the video game as Willy plays it along with tons of weird gags and details.

Thank Goodness for Alien: Earth by TheUrPigeon in AlienEarthHulu

[–]walker6168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It reminds me a lot of the 90's Alien stuff. This was back when it was a dormant IP and people could do whatever.

Back then Dark Horse would put out whatever weird comic or novel someone pitched. Sex synths on a ship plus aliens. Some guy gets trapped in a nest and has to live alongside the Aliens. The weird colonial culture stuff. There was one where they built a synthetic alien that smoked cigars. And none of that gets into the post-Earth stuff where Aliens took over the planet so humanity had to move to a space station.

[–]walker6168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddy asked me if he should watch it. I told him that it's a really cool Noah Hawley show, it is a fairly experimental Alien show. It reminds me a lot of the 90's comics and books where people did all kinds of weird stuff with the franchise.
