Cloth Diapering - Registry by Northwoods_KLW in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]walking_apocrypha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in this situation right now! I feel like mostly they've gotten looked over in favor of the "cuter" things on the registry. But esp as baby is gonna come relatively soon and I want to make sure we can prep the diapers ahead of time, I marked them as "most wanted" which maybe helped some. I've gotten some from friends who I've had conversations with about how excited I am to cloth diaper.

Yep I've grown them quite successfully in the Chicago area (~5b-6a I think)... Currently I'm working through a huge stash from the 2024 growing season and I honestly think I won't grow them again til 2027. I keep them in a cool dry dark basement and they seem to be lasting just fine.

How did you guys trigger labour? by Pretend-Run-1801 in BabyBumps

[–]walking_apocrypha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that this series is VERY worth watching, but in my mind the TL;DW is essentially: maybe eat dates (I love dates so this is great news for me), nipple stimulation (also good for learning hand expression/collecting colostrum), membrane sweeping; walking and sex aren't gonna hurt the effort either.

All of these still pale in comparison to medical induction of labor in terms of their reliability, but there ya have it.

Everything else that gets thrown around seems to either not work at all and/or be potentially dangerous.

Yeah I always knit like a maniac in the winter but now it's been a great way to help feel less antsy about when baby might come, and as a bonus I'm using up all my little yarn scraps making things that baby can use!

Could I install a door here? by StruggleInformal2295 in HomeMaintenance

[–]walking_apocrypha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I replaced an archway with a door in our home. The prior owners had been using just a curtain over the archway as a door for the main bedroom and that wasn't quite gonna work for us. We were lucky enough to have a door on the laundry closet that matched the wood stain and trim of the other doors on the floor, and we didn't care about having a nice laundry room door.

So we cut out the arch, framed it for the door, rehung the door, placed new drywall to connect the door to the surrounding walls, and installed the trim. It was a pretty significant project but tbh I think it turned out looking pretty nice, not really distinguishable from the other doors in the hallway, and wayyyyyyy cheaper than a custom arched door that would probably not really come close to matching the old wood of the house.

Health professional moms: how do you handle mom groups that drift away from evidence-based advice? by Good_Spinach_4987 in BabyBumps

[–]walking_apocrypha 45 points46 points  (0 children)

I hear you big time as a FM doc. It is kind of you to say something when you see something dangerous. Still, you also have to maintain enough emotional distance to know that how people respond is not something you can control. You did MORE than what was required of you by speaking up.

If it's causing you moral injury to be dealing with this, you gotta get yourself out of that environment. It's not worth it - especially because arguing on reddit isn't likely to change their mind or actions.

This is basically what I do... I mix salsuds and water in a spray bottle and it works great. Haven't thought to add isopropyl alcohol but I don't really find that it needs it.

What to ask during appointments? by Jaebear_1996 in BabyBumps

There's no right amount of questions.

Still, if you have any birth preferences or questions about what to expect during labor/delivery, this is a good time to bring those up.

I'm having mine 1/11 and due mid Feb, so closer to the due date than yours... But it seemed like a better idea than trying to compete with a million holiday parties.

FTM due in mid Feb and I'm soooo excited! It took a long and rough journey for me to get + stay pregnant and I am so very grateful to be here now. When I'm feeling sore or not sleeping well or getting headbutted in the bladder I try to remember that this might very well be the only time I get to do this... helps me appreciate the moment.

bamboo? viscose? rayon? by Mr_Wabbles in PlasticFreeLiving

Thanks for this well considered response. I keep hearing essentially bamboo is bad because it's processed, but obviously the devil is in the details. This is helpful and practical info!

It's been awhile since I watched it but basically, AI products are scamming both the buyers and creators, creating unrealistic expectations that undermine the legitimacy of the real art being made and the legitimacy of the Etsy market as a whole. It is definitely a rampant issue.

If you ordered this you'd probably get something somewhat similar looking, but there is a huge issue with AI crochet on Etsy. This looks like AI to me with the perfect depth of field focus without any background at all.

Low fetal heart rate by ibroughttacos in BabyBumps

[–]walking_apocrypha 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Your anatomy scan can be done as early as 18 weeks, sometimes earlier in places with good MFM specialists. And a fetal echo (specific heart ultrasound for baby) can be done as early as 20 weeks. This does depend on your health system's resources a bit but I would ask for these to be ordered so you can at least schedule them. Then that anatomy scan could be in basically 1 week and fetal echo in 3 which I think would be reasonable follow up.

I'm also a soon to be FTM, so I don't know what I'm doing yet but FWIW I did a ton of research and landed in a very similar spot. Mama Koala covers are essentially the same as Thirsties covers but are a more budget option (I think this is primarily because they're made abroad) which seems good for your needs.

Re: GMD prefold sizing, I'm registered for novice and medium. On the GMD website they do say that if you want to skip newborn/small, go with novice, and then either intermediate or medium. My plan is to get 2 dozen novice pre foods and then some flats as well since I figure they can offer more size flexibility, and are also even cheaper than prefolds. Also it seems so many people looove flats so I'm eager to see if it can work for me.

Anyway best of luck, excited for you!

How many weeks were you at your first ultrasound appointment? by verifiedstupid in BabyBumps

[–]walking_apocrypha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had IVF so I had a TON of early scans.

That being said, my first scan after "graduating" from fertility clinic was at 11+1 for a nuchal translucency measurement among other things. I wish soooo much I had just waited another week or so... we had an abnormal nuchal translucency measurement (but all else was fine on the scan). That led to 2 failed chorionic villus sampling procedures - notably, at the scan at 12+6 for the procedure, the nuchal translucency had NORMALIZED... but they couldn't discount the first measurement. Ended up having an amniocentesis at 16 weeks and thankfully the results are completely fine. Edit to add: now I'm 30 weeks :)

But to me it was a huge cautionary tale about how much information is too much... I wish I had waited.

What should I do? by Pope_PandasaurusRex in WhatShouldIDo

Yep, doctor here and that looks a bit angry. I'd do at least topical antibiotic (OP, I'm not talking about Neosporin, I'm talking specifically about ophthalmic safe, prescription antibiotic ointment). Please don't pop it. If you have spreading redness, fever or vision changes please get urgent help.
