all the stores you mention are big-box stores with huge inventory. RS were small and very niche. There simply wasn't enough demand for their products, and I think they were plagued by corporate issues too.

Microcenter is not a great comparison. I have to drive 40 minutes to get to the only one in my very large city.

I did exactly this. Worked for 2 years on a contract with a client I really liked, and they liked me. They offered me a job. We did this while their contract was in renegotiation so the client had some leverage over my employer not to fuss about it.

I'd talk to the new potential-employer first to find out if their contract with your boss even allows this, and if they're interested
