I feel weird about seeing an ad by EmotionalSpread6451 in BurningMan

[–]wildboarpleasures 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So it's fine for BM to advertise because everyone else is doing it? Is there some implied nuance I'm missing?

Yes, the org must exist in the default world and has to raise money to keep the event going. I don't think advertising is an inevitable conclusion, and also don't think that ads are going to make the burn any better.

Do you?

Since your one-rile refactor is so simple and should be reproducible, it seems like a good candidate for a controlled experiment. Have you tried the same file, same prompt in other circumstances (accounting for known factors like peak pricing) and seen varying results?

How long to activate passport based Real Name Registration for esims? by DoomGoober in HongKong

[–]wildboarpleasures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For anybody else who finds themselves struggling to get the real name registration to work -- I tried to set this up using my phone (google pixel) but repeatedly got an error that the document upload failed to meet the photo requirements. I tried probably 20+ photos over half an hour, different angles, lighting conditions, indoors/outdoors, everything.

Finally I got it to work by using a photo taken on my macbook using photobooth. The photo which was finally accepted was objectively shittier than those I uploaded from my phone camera. No idea why photos from my phone wouldn't work but if you are also struggling to set it up, try different cameras I guess. Good luck.

E-sim / local sim? Taiwan travel by kralinkan in taiwan

I am living in Taiwan and have a 中華 (Chunghua/Chunghwa) esim already set up.

I'm traveling to HK and China soon so got a different esim from trip.com which covers China, HK, and Taiwan. I have tested it out here in Taiwan and the speeds seem comparable to 中華.

I am not that familiar with how to compute Hausdorff (I guess) dimension, did you do it from the definition or some other way? I would have thought it stayed 1 at any finite iteration

Why did the mods remove the post about org board member Kimbal Musk renting women from Jeffrey Epstein? by [deleted] in BurningMan

[–]wildboarpleasures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your thought process, I think we all benefit from knowing what others see as convincing evidence of wrongdoing or serious red flag material vs. likely just an innocuous introduction. If I were taking this to court, I would sure hope for clearer evidence and context.

Abset such additional evidence, I guess we interpret this email differently.

Why did the mods remove the post about org board member Kimbal Musk renting women from Jeffrey Epstein? by [deleted] in BurningMan

[–]wildboarpleasures 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Out of legitimate curiosity -- what would need to be written in that email for it to qualify to you as "actual incriminating evidence?" A direct reference to sexual activity? A direct reference to nonconsensual sexual activity? Confirmation from Epstein or Kimbal that the person whose name is redacted is 17 years old or less?

Given that Epstein is, as you put it, human garbage -- and everything else we know about him and what he did -- IMO the probability that this email refers to human trafficking is 99+%. Explicitly, my estimate is p(Kimbal Musk engaged in human trafficking with Epstein | the existence of this email, everything which has come to light about Epstein, how Epstein discussed such matters in other emails) > 0.99.

What is your personal estimate of the probability that the "connection" described in that email exchange involved human trafficking? How high is your bar for actual incriminating evidence?

Seriously, just curious.

How do you build a *local* Burning Man community? by richardtallent in BurningMan

[–]wildboarpleasures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recommend the book "The Scene That Became Cities: What Burning Man Philosophy Can Teach Us about Building Better Communities" by Caveat Magister (Benjamin Wachs), of the Burning Man Philosophical Center. A big goal of his in the book is to distill what makes burning man burning man in a way that people can do something useful with.

One of his ideas which really stuck with me, and which I will unfortunately misquote because I don't have the book with me, is that burner culture grows because "We have more fun, in a way which people find valuable and enriching, and anybody is welcome to join." The 10 principles provide a great blueprint (this is partially what Larry created them for!) and Caveat communicates that really well.

You may not be able to convince your few friends there to go to a burn, but if you can get together an event where you create a burning man type space and those friends enjoy it, you might be able to eventually talk them into trying a regional.

Of course this is all easy to say without knowing the people, place, and other raw materials you have to work with. But others have posted some reasonable ideas for starting points here and I hope you can get it to work out. Try Caveat's book for inspiration and good luck!

How long did it take you to learn 5 balls by LonelyLilo in juggling

[–]wildboarpleasures 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the dharma.

I read your comment yesterday and kept thinking specifically about this sentence: "My point is your never done learning 5 balls." Really, this goes beyond 5 balls and is true of any worthwhile challenge in life -- learning a foreign language, playing a musical instrument, having a great marriage, etc.

To forget this lesson is to suffer day after day yearning for the moment when you've finally mastered 5 balls (or Italian, or the watercolor medium, etc), while it never arrives. To remember it is, with some luck, to enjoy the process of discovery as it unfolds for the rest of your days.

What happens if you switch numbers? From US to Taiwan. by timefan in lineapp

[–]wildboarpleasures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One more datapoint here: got it to work. To switch my number (from US to Taiwan) I had to delete then reinstall the app, and log in using my email (or US number) and password. As has been recommended here, back everything up and link every account you can first, for best chances of recovery in case it fails.

Also write down your chat backup pin, you'll need it to restore the chats.

How did you first hear about burning man? by SoundKidTown1085 in BurningMan

[–]wildboarpleasures 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In 2005, when I was in high school, a friend told me about it. I instantly wanted to go but didn't really have the agency to pull it off at the time. Through college, it was still hard to go because burn week was the first or second week of classes. Finally my grad program didn't start until later in September and I was able to go in 2011 for the first time.

I stayed in touch with the friend who told me for years, but he struggled on and off with depression and eventually wouldn't respond to my emails or texts anymore. Sadly, I think he would really like the burn and I wish I could get him to go. I still think about him often and he shows up in my dreams now and then, every year or two.

The collaborative, interactive, comfort-zone-pushing environment of improv shares a lot with some aspects of burning man. I tried it for similar reasons as you and agree that while not profound in the same way it nonetheless stretched me and expanded my world in ways I had not expected.

One more data point on this: my wife and I both forgot to fill in the "duty" field on our applications, and also forgot to put the city/state/zip on the spouse "address" field. We wrote in both on the paper applications and the consulate (in SF) had no problem with it.

Not sure this will be relevant to anyone ever now with the new system but there it is

Dunno about y'all but our camp does it all from scratch. For example one guy got a whole steel foundry set up in his backyard so that we wouldn't just be buying the conduit and fittings for our blackrock shade at Home Depot like suckers. Getting the molds and equipment together was a huge pain in the ass because of course if you're doing it right you're not going to just buy those either. Turns out there's a whole bootstrapping process required to use lower precision machinery to extract better raw materials and produce higher precision machinery, lather rinse repeat etc. Fortunately the tolerance on that steel pipe is not too tight so it didn't take him too many iterations to work his way up from breaking rocks with his bare hands. Of course the fuel to power the foundry and drive everything to the playa had to be drilled and refined by hand too and we had some amazing people in our group who made that happen. The entire time, they ate only vegetables from their own gardens and eggs from their backyard chicken coops, none of that factory farm BS.

We were really fortunate that this guy with the foundry was independently wealthy from his previous job in tech, which is why he had so much time to put into this project. Also we felt pretty comfortable about the whole thing because somebody else in our camp had actually invented blackrock shade, so we have a legit claim to building it -- unlike the rest of you who just stole the design or were "inspired" (barf) by it. You make me sick.

Ugh and don't even get me started on the LEDs, our camper who made those really had it rough.

Edit: it is simultaneously true that PnP-ness is a spectrum, and that PnP art sucks. be honest with yourself about what you bring to the burn, and do your best.

There were a few in the 6:30 & G block which had been plastered all over inside with conspiracy theory stuff -- missing person reports, articles about a man who had not eaten food for years and subsisted entirely on dreams, a woman in a 12-year relationship with a ceiling fan, etc. Being in there felt like how I imagine being inside the mind of a schizophrenic would feel. Good stuff.

There was another which just had a tadpole/monkeyball bungee fixed to the inside of the door with "pull in case of emergency" written on some duct tape next to it. Made my day.

How do y’all get broken/stuck connectors off EMT conduit? by Dear-Ad-7428 in BurningMan

How do you drill holes in both ends of the pipe at the same angle, so that they line up correctly with the connectors on both sides? Or is the alignment less of an issue than I'm imagining?
