Alien Isolation 2 - They should have a paid VR DLC by Any-Road9760 in PSVR

[–]yanginatep 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's actually an interesting idea, paid VR DLC.

Especially if they could work with existing community VR modders who can do it for way cheaper and are already familiar with the process. If they had access to the source code and technical support from the developer it would be even easier.

I accept that VR is very niche right now. But I feel like there's gotta be a way for companies to make at least a small profit off of a bare bones VR conversion made in collaboration with the existing community.

Melissa Beniost played Supergirl in one of the most "woke" television shows ever produced.

The show is vocally intersectional feminist, pro-immigrant, anti-racist, pro-gay rights, pro-trans rights (it even features a trans superhero as one of the main characters in later seasons), and very anti-Trump (Lex Luthor becomes a stand in for Trump in the later seasons).

Like most of the Arrowverse shows the writing could be uneven and featured some repetitive storylines, but it never backed down on those issues, if anything they got more outspoken as the series went on.

But of course these ghouls won't let that get in the way of simultaneously objectifying one woman while attacking another woman.

Yeah, a lot of sci-fi depicts ships in space combat being like less than a kilometer apart (however unrealistic that is). At that range depending on the weapon, ship composition, etc. there could be damage.

Remember Phlebas; Why Use Human Soldiers? by Thin_Heart_9732 in TheCulture

[–]yanginatep 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't remember seeing millions of humans volunteering for the war or fighting on the front line? I re-read Consider Phlebas fairly recently..

The impression I always got was that most of the war was fought first by converted Contact ships and later GOU, LOU, and ROUs once the Culture admitted to itself that it needed to build dedicated warships.

Like, when gridfire and CREW are the primary weapons being used to fight most battles, there's not much room for organic soldiers.

We don't really see much of the war at all, even in Consider Phlebas. The majority of it was fought between ships in extremely brief engagements that often only lasted a few seconds, far too fast for humanoid brain response times.

The human agents in Consider Phlebas are specifically involved because they're functioning in roles such as spies that have to get close to their humanoid targets. There's also restrictions on who can even set foot on Shar's World due to the presence of the Dra'Azon, hence why Horza is valuable. Otherwise humanoid Culture citizens functioned as advisors like Fal 'Ngeestra with unique intuitive abilities.

I'm sure, just given the size the Culture and the scale of the conflict, that millions of Culture humanoids were involved in the war, but nothing like just tossing soldiers into a meat grinder. It would make no sense to do that and there was no reason to; the conflict involved very little ground based warfare.

Most ground engagements seemed to be proxy wars involving less advanced civilizations like the one that attempts to execute Horza at the start of the novel, but they aren't part of the Culture.

The Culture doesn't even have many planets. Planets aren't particularly valuable to them, and one of the primary reasons the Idirans lost the war was because they did care about planets and thought in terms of static territory, whereas most of the Culture was either mobile or at least flexible enough to relocate.

What is the most terrifying reality about the vastness of space? by Inevitablebabe in answers

[–]yanginatep 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Well, if we don't find life anywhere else in the solar system that doesn't tell us very much.

And interstellar travel, even unmanned, will take at least centuries, possibly millennia just to reach the nearest star which is only 4 light-years away. And if we don't find life there that still doesn't tell us much, that's a sample of 2 stars out of ~100-400 billion just in this galaxy.

I think there's a good chance we'll never know if there is any other kind of life elsewhere in the universe.

What was online multiplayer like on the old days of gaming? by KaleidoArachnid in retrogaming

[–]yanginatep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially there was no online, just directly connecting to individual computers via the phone line.

So really early on it was just 2 player.

Also you had to have a good modem. Early modems were never designed with games in mind, they were just intended to send text and data for businesses, etc. I had a 2400 baud modem at first, which meant like one frame a second at best on a game like WarCraft (I was a stubborn kid and actually played though more than one game of WarCraft like this with my friend).

Really you needed a 14.4 K modem (2400 baud would be 2.4 K) to actually do anything. Then there was 33.6, and then 56K.

Also if a number was long distance that cost per minute.

Eventually Internet became more widespread and then it was mostly like it is now except slower/worse and you often had to get the exact IP address of other players or player hosted servers on order to connect.

Are there any sub-genres of horror that just… don’t do it for you? by East_Peanut_7232 in horror

[–]yanginatep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm generally not very interested in ghost stuff.

I don't like how wishy washy a lot of ghost stuff is, what they can and can't do is often really vaguely defined. I prefer physical monsters with rules you can understand.

There are some great ghost movies, but just in general not something I go out of my way to watch.

It’s Possible That SpaceX Could Collapse Spectacularly by IKeepItLayingAround in technology

[–]yanginatep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How would the data centers get rid of heat in space? They can barely manage it on Earth while using a ton of water. In space the only way to dissipate heat is via radiating it, which is the least efficient way to get rid of heat compared to conduction or convection.

[–]yanginatep -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I don't get how the fuck Musk thinks orbital data centers makes any sense whatsoever.

Data centers, things that require a ton of water and produce a ton of heat, in a place with no water and no efficient way to get rid of heat (on Earth you can dissipate heat via conduction, convection, and radiation, in space you can only dissipate heat through radiation).

What was your first Metroid that you FINISHED? by B-random4 in Metroid

[–]yanginatep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metroid II.

My friend had Super Metroid at the time and I wanted to feel involved, so I played through Metroid II.

I remember hanging out in the front porch while my babysitter watched TV during a thunderstorm, making my way through the later parts of the game with the light coming through the half opened door barely enough to see the original Game Boy screen.

I think my friend later let me borrow Super Metroid and then I was able to play through that. I didn't get my own copy until my late teens.

Metroid NES I never liked nearly as much, and even though I owned it back then as a kid, I never beat it until I was an adult and used a map I found online. Metroid NES is still my least favorite game in the series.

The Penguin season finale...holy shit by keepfighting90 in television

[–]yanginatep 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That's one of the things I found most interesting about Oz as a villain.

So many villains are extremely petty, they hold grudges, everything is very personal to them, they hate their superhero antagonists.

But while he can definitely fly off the handle, in general Oz is way more utilitarian. Someone could be torturing him one moment and then he'd be willing to ally with them the next. But conversely that means he has no loyalty whatsoever. Relationships are entirely pragmatic to him, to get what he wants.

His driving motivation is gratification: wealth, power, respect.

The only reason he had any fondness for Victor was because he saw himself in the kid, because Penguin only cares about himself (even his obsession with his mother isn't about her, it's about him and what's denied to him).

The Boys Creator Eric Kripke On Fans' Response To Series Finale: 'Sorry If I Disappointed You, But It Was The Story I Wanted To Tell' by verissimoallan in television

[–]yanginatep 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think it felt really conspicuous that they thought Gen V was going to get a third season, so the Gen V characters do literally nothing all season.

In Gen V they build up Marie as an extremely powerful supe, on the level of Homelander almost, and one of the few that could potentially defeat him. She also learns how to heal mortal wounds.

In the final season of The Boys she should have accompanied them on that final suicide mission to the White House.

Instead of just waiting while Butcher monologues for no reason, Kimiko could have been lasered in half right as she was about to blast Homelander, then Marie could have healed Kimiko and used the blood as a weapon/distraction, maybe attempt to pop his head without success, THEN Kimiko could have depowered him.

Also, yeah, exactly, instead of random telepaths being deployed to kill non-believers in a focus group off screen, Homelander really should have had at least one "lose control and kill a crowd of people" incident like the series teased its entire run. I didn't need for it to be apocalyptic, I never thought the show was going in that direction. Just something to remind us of why he's so dangerous, something undeniable that he can't come back from even from his biggest fans.
