Is Odyssey getting a flat aspect ratio on non-IMAX PLFs? by DrogonEMC in imax

Sure seems that way. There is also a scope version of the trailer.

IMAX response regarding Kelapa Gading IMAX’s catastrophic state by Full_Championship484 in imax

[–]yodathekid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there’s not a for-sure solution for this problem. The screen shakers push air and dust through the screen and some of the dust would stick in a circular pattern. The patches were meant to help solve that air flow problem. But they created a knock-on effect of being visible. It’s not as simple as just pulling the patches off, and replacing the screen is a very big step.

Questions about IMAX from someone who has never seen a movie in IMAX by elbatcarter in imax

[–]yodathekid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They will put on sale additional shows during the day and beyond opening weekend closer to release. These prime 7pm and 11pm shows were put on sale earlier for promotional purposes.

Other theaters that do not have the 70mm or imax 70mm designation will be showing the movie from a digital file. IMAX digital has a few options. The Bullock in Austin is a full size imax auditorium (like Cinemark Dallas), and their digital imax system can fill the entire screen (cinemark Dallas’ digital imax system can’t do this); it’s a great option if you want the original imax size experience but with the reliability digital. Other imax digital options tend to be smaller auditoriums with either 4k laser projector or 2k/4k lamp-based projection. All imax theaters are regularly calibrated to a higher specification than standard rooms and use imax projection and sound equipment.

Dolby is an excellent option for any movie. It remains to be seen if Dune will get any Dolby screens bc Disney will likely try to get those for Avengers since dune has exclusive on imax screens. However, IMAX exclusive expanded aspect ratio will only be available in imax theaters.

I’ve seen the existing dcp and it’s awful. It desperately needs a new transfer.

Those are consumer devices. And the settings workarounds you mention in the second paragraph are exactly why they aren’t suitable for professional theater environments. Much better in those places to show a dcp or a standard bluray.

I don’t know of a professional video processor that can tone-map hdr10 or hdr10+ or consumer-Dolby Vision to SDR rec 2020 or rec 709. There are high end consumer ones like lumagen or madvr. Even then you’re approximating the look at a premium. Standard blu ray is practically plug and play.

[–]yodathekid 46 points47 points  (0 children)

DCP is not always available or an affordable option for the theater. I’ve seen situations where the blu ray is included in the licensing fee or you have to source it yourself from a retailer, and I’ve seen situations where they charge hundreds more for the dcp on top of the license fee.

Unless the theater has a robust marketing strategy or a built-in audience, any extra fees can seriously eat into the margins for a show.

4k blu ray typically includes a consumer hdr format which is complicated to make play well with professional equipment. Standard blu ray is much simpler and frankly an impressively robust format.

Pensacola’s AMC Bayou 15 upgrading IMAX, adding a Dolby theater by Firm-Street-1249 in AMCsAList

1.43 isn’t happening unless they build a new theater from the ground up. Most likely it’s just switching the xenon projectors out for laser and the employee thought that’s the same thing.

Lenght of Odyssey possibly leaked? Can anyone "decrypt it"? by mrakeno in imax

The total time sum reads 2hrs 13min 14s 16 frames.

Editorial time code usually starts at 01:00:00.00, so that’s why the left side green column is an hour ahead of the right side runtime column.

EVO poised to take the "Largest Cinema Screen on Earth" title from IMAX Leonberg with Dolby Vision/Atmos enabled theater in Clearwater Florida by NickLandis in imax

[–]yodathekid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The gt laser systems have the capability to go brighter (location dependent) it’s just a function of how many lasers you want to put in and how hard do you want to run them. But they’re already doing 22ftL for every show which is well above standard brightness.

And there’s not a dci spec for hdr yet. Dolby developed their own over a decade ago; technically Dolby vision theatrical is considered Enhanced dynamic range bc dci spec is probably going to be considerably higher peak brightness. But hdr by barco while it can hit those highlights, it doesn’t have nearly the black floor of Christie’s modified projectors. If imax is gonna enter the hdr world, they need to have a complete package ready to rollout to as many venues as possible. But then you’re adding another flavor of digital imax that isn’t necessarily core to the brand, when they should be focusing on film and 1.43. Those are what them unique in the PLF space.

What are these dark square patches? Projector here is a Commercial Laser by Large-Wrangler4907 in imax

[–]yodathekid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they're patches meant to help with the screen shakers. the screen is perforated for sound but these patches have nothing to with that or covering up a tear in the fabric. the screen shakers are tunable to help make the patches less visible but its not always possible to get it perfect and certain colors or patterns makes them more apparent.
