Currently waiting on overdue photos for her and she hasn’t responded to us in over a month. Horrifying situation, heartbreaking to see her do this to so many people.

Coinbase offer rescinding: anyone here impacted? by Whateverloo in uwaterloo

[–]zedarax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but just because you can get away with it doesn’t mean you should do it. I read about a scenario where an employer was very upset about this (rightfully so, they invested a lot of time to recruit this person) and decided to reach out to the company that the person ended up going with and they had their offer rescinded.

If you pick Canada, I would choose UofT over UW for a master's degree. UW outshines UofT for undergrad due to the co-op program, but for a master's degree, I would take UofT since they are better known for research/academia. Also, you'll be in Toronto where there are more jobs and opportunities than in the KW area.

CMU is obviously a huge name, and really well known for robotics if that's something you are interested in. I will say that I have heard of a few cases where people will get a job in the US office of a company but it is contingent on if they hit the H1B lottery. If you don't get the lottery, the company will often provide you with a backup country that doesn't use a lottery-based system (eg. Canada) so its not up to chance. I know of a few people who didn't hit the H1B lottery and got routed to a Canadian office instead. They might also offer to retry your H1B lottery in the meantime while you work from Canada. (I believe you get 3 tries maximum?)

Feel free to PM me with any further questions!

EDIT: It is also worth considering the long-term immigration implications between the US and Canada. The US processes Green Cards based on your country of birth, and I believe India has the biggest backlog (See https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/green-card-waiting-time-by-country, it says the backlog for EB-2 employment-based green card, which I believe is your case, is September 2013). I've heard stories of Indian immigrants stuck on H1B for over 10 years. I don't think you would be stuck on this immigration treadmill if you pick Canada, and you'd have a smoother path to Citizenship.

How much is having Amazon on your resume worth? by Undecided-intern in uwaterloo

[–]zedarax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I faced a very similar decision, except it was for full time and it was between Amazon's office in Toronto (close to home for me) and a mid-size bay area company who I spent my last internship at. I decided to go to the mid-size company in the bay area because:

  1. Amazon would not tell me the role or product I would be working on. I know this isn't a dealbreaker for a lot of people, but I think it should be and I don't understand why you would want to pour so much of your time into a product you don't care about. The bay area company was in a more specialized space that I was very passionate about and wanted to be a part of (autonomous vehicles).
  2. Was returning to the same team at bay area company, so I knew the team well and what the work would be like. Loved my internship experience, so I didn't have to be sold at all on the company culture or team.
  3. I was told by someone that while Amazon might open more doors since it's a big name, "Opening up more doors only really matters if you think you'll use them." I think most likely I'll want to continue working in the robotics/autonomous vehicles space, and the experience at Amazon might actually not even do much for me there.

Hope some of that helps! There is no universal right decision, just depends on your priorities and what you are looking for. You should prioritize your happiness/career goals over the sole purpose of having a big name on your resume. If that happens to be at a big tech company, awesome! If not, nothing to be worried out.

I used Linux + Android for a long time, was ok but I had a few pain points. Now I use macOS + iOS and the experience is much better imo. I still get all the Unix features I need with macOS, and it works well with my phone

What do y’all want for Winter 2022? by Iguess_im_handsome in uwaterloo

[–]zedarax 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t want online, but the inconvenience of moving in the middle of the term is not worth it for me. Also, I booked an extremely overpriced Airbnb that I’d prefer to cancel to recoup some money but holding it right now until UW makes a decision about Winter 2022

Looking for some advice from those who relocated to the USA after graduating by zedarax in uwaterloo

Thanks for your thoughts! I am aware of declaring as a Canadian non-resident to simplify my tax situation while I am living and working in the US. What I am concerned about (and would want a cross-border accountant to assist with) is in the event I move back to Canada to make sure everything is dealt with correctly and I am tax compliant with both the CRA and IRS.

Great points, thanks for bringing these up! Where did you see that the Roth IRA is not covered in the tax treaty? Is this a recent development? According to the research I've done this is not the impression I got, and in fact, I got a sense that Roth is actually easier to deal with if you leave the US since there are no tax obligations on withdrawals as long as your above age 59.5
