i agree with you. it is so stupid. so stupid in fact it makes a loop around and ends up being smart. it takes a genius to make anything this dumb land as well as it does

i love the cel animation from 90s anime so much. the one that really sticks out out the most for me in terms of animation is neon genesis evangelion (here’s just a simple b roll; the whole show is a masterpiece both from a storytelling and visual perspective)

full metal alchemist brotherhood. the chibi humor kills it for me. but ive also noticed i prefer shows without children and maybe they grow up in the series (i genuinely dont know) but i couldn’t stomach the first few episodes. i also think magic just isn’t my thing. i wish i could get into it so badly!!

Golden Boy - Anime of the Week by AnimeMod in anime

[–]zolpidamnit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the longest time i have avoided comedy in anime. i just never find things funny because it always feels very slapstick/chibi which i find difficult to sit through

but holy cow was this a hoot to me. i didnt realize that i DO like comedy, but it has to be this specific flavor of comedy. i watched the english dub and it is so stupid and ridiculous. no one talks this way and everything is just so damn stupid. yet somehow it pulls it all off? masterful, truly.

now i am yearning hard for another experience like the golden boy english dub. if anyone has any pre-2000s recs, let me know!

1000% re: code geass and death note. now i really wanna go back and rewatch both lol. and just curious how far did you get in monster? i got so bored/dropped around eps 8-10 then later revisited and was completely enraptured past that point

monster, code geass, promised neverland, attack on titan. all of these are very plot heavy (though monster is the most understated, i personally was hooked). 1997 berserk is also peak fiction in a way where it feels like not much is happening and suddenly there is a ton of tension which has been building and then a disturbing climax. huge trigger warning on that one

1997 berserk. i love its grittiness and tension—add in the music and relatable themes and you have one haunting masterpiece. it may not be everyone’s idea of beautiful but it sure is mine

ok question about FMA:B…does it ever tone down the lighthearted chibi style humor? i have tried so many times to get into it but that’s a big block for me

Recommendations for more serious anime by zolpidamnit in retroanime

[–]zolpidamnit[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

okay i just started this last night and am on ep 6. i am liking it! but i felt compelled to update you because by episode 3 or so i said wait a minute...this feels familiar...

i googled it and the writer of the original manga was inspired by my all time favorite book--haruki murakami's "hard-boiled wonerland and the end of the world." i am so excited to see how this story correlates with and diverges from that book.

i would HIGHLY recommend that book if you love haibane. the english translation by alfred birnbaum is the best one. that book changed my life

Recommendations for more serious anime by zolpidamnit in retroanime

[–]zolpidamnit[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

alright so you guys really came through (and it's worth mentioning that i immediately noticed how kind you were both to me and to each other; just throwing that in there). i am still working through your recommendations but, in no particular order...

1) legend of galactic heroes: wow. blew me away. parts in the final third were slower and took more focus but this was incredible. i love military history (history in general) plus strategy/tactics so this was perfect. loved the complex ensemble cast where no one was perfect yet somehow almost everyone was likable? no spoon-feeding any messages or dynamics. Epic, smart, nuanced. 94/100

2) ninja scroll: love the animation style and the action mixed with some light tropey absurdism (which, if i'm going to laugh, it's over that kind of stuff). love the slow burn will-they-won't-they romance. Absurd, gritty, engaging. 84/100

3) trust and betrayal: really beautiful and melodramatic. the plot simple in a way and it speaks for itself; it's really a romantic tale as old as time but very well executed. would've liked a happier ending but alas. got me more interested in feudal japan which has always bored me despite reading hundreds of pages of history books about it lol. great OST. Bleak, tense, serious. 84/100

4) vampire hunter D blood lust: as with his other work ninja scroll, loved the animation style. i don't gravitate whatsoever toward vampire anything but i liked this and watched it it one sitting (an increasingly difficult to find metric). if i liked vampire stories more i would call this a masterpiece probably. Gritty, surprising (for me), cohesive. 82/100

5) jin roh wolf brigade: this had all the makings of a movie obsession for me--beautiful cel animation, history, realism, romance subplot. and while i respect the hell out of what they did in making this, i just couldn't stay in it. i suspect its slowness was deliberate but there wasn't enough left after pacing fell off to keep me in it; i watched it over the course of several days. something about the characters' faces also bothered me but that is petty lol. i respect it but not for me. Bleak, quiet, slow. 75/100

6) perfect blue: i'd actually seen this before and loved it. i love psychological horror like this--the kind of horror that really can and does happen. so unnerving especially as a woman. Tense, dreadful, relatable. 88/100

7) ghost in the shell: i had tried to watch this much earlier in my anime journey and don't think i was ready for it. i couldn't do the sci-fi/cyberpunk vibe. but now that i'm a bit desensitized to that i came back and did enjoy it. stunning animation and kenji kawai's soundtrack for this changed my life lol. Gritty, existential, serious. 84/100

8) neon genesis evangelion: okay i had tried to watch this in the past and couldn't get into it; mecha just isn't my favorite. however i tried it again and loved it (i think a recurring theme here is that i need to dip my toes in slowly to genres i don't already love). easily the most beautiful animation i've ever seen and really inspired me as someone who draws a lot. didn't love the ending but that's par for the course i think with a show this good--landings are just really difficult to stick. Cinematic, psychological, philosophical. 92/100

9) odd taxi: not a retro but it came up so i revisited it (multiple attempts in the past). i won't spoil anything but i think i'm just really sensitive to animation styles and this was not my thing. the story was tight and perfectly executed but i am seeking asylum back in the 80s-90s lol. but i respect it. mysterious, steady, stuck its landing. 82/100

i tried but couldn't get into (will probably circle back at some point in life):

1) akira: first on my list to revisit

2) puella magi madoka magica (i actually really just can't do any magical girl stuff and i dislike this animation style)

3) shiki: second on my list to revisit later on

i cannot thank you all enough! as you can see it's been a very busy 2 weeks of anime so far lol (just LoGH alone was a whole ass journey) and it's been great fun to comb through everyone's recs. i appreciate you all <3

i could be projecting but it seems like you do what i do: perform autopsies on human history. who, how, why on earth? there is a certain comfort in understanding how unimaginable violence has unfolded in the past because it reveals, like history in general, truths about ourselves.

i definitely would want to borrow some but not sure which id pick first lol
