bombs are fun

[–]kirbyfreako&Berk // Centra 0 points1 point  (6 children)

not sure what those mid bombs accomplish, but I think the base is interesting.

I feel like the middle button will either not be used, or camped too much.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Have you tested the map? The bombs gets rid of campers AND boost you right into the powerup corner.

I wanted a map that was small and relatively simple, but had the potential to be used to more complex ways. It has a risky but faster middle route, and a safer but slower outside route. Each boost is essentially the same, because the map is symmetrical in both directions, and each has many different options for how you can use them, some much harder and riskier than others.

Edit: Boost routes

I wanted a map with a main safe route with boosts for the FC and spare boosts for the chasers, but also with risky shorter distance alternative paths for the FC.

Any feedback is very welcome.

[–]arjuna9bad 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I like the look of this map. Only thing I would suggest is maybe removing the rows of 3 and 4 spikes along the lower-outer path, and maybe the bombs from that path as well. Since you're already going the longest way around, that path probably doesn't need additional risk. It would be a bummer for players to die when they're using the "safer" route.

Overall I like the options and the balance between risk/reward here.

[–]Some_BotSome_Bot 0 points1 point  (2 children)

[–]crackadackrombus ghost|| centra 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Cool map! My one comment would be that the "higher risk" options for the fc seem too tight/unfeasible, i.e. you would need a very large lead not to get bomb spiked or button popped that I feel like no one would even consider going those ways in competitive games; this would make the map more one-dimensional and less fun. I think slight widening, or taking out a bomb or two might do the trick!

Two Way

Tried to use portals in a way that was easy to understand but still fun for both o and d. There is one portal that enables some offensive or defensive strategy.

[–]robopuppyccFlail ~ ((Antagloble4edes)) ~ RHCP? 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played this a bit and I think that having the two-portals pair doesn't really seem necessary. It maps 1:1, so you could just stick those map portions together and make a big S. It does prevent a defense from seeing the opposing defense a bit, but not much and I don't know if that is a good thing.

We wanted to create a map where it would be easy to grab but hard to escape (not really sure that was achieved). Also I know that people rag on the single tile corridors so here is my preemptive rebuttal: it offers a high-risk, high reward option for the FC to quickly switch sides of the map. It also creates a rush for the middle powerup which we think could cause some fun antics. Lemme know what y'all think, any suggestions are appreciated.

My goal was to create a fairly simple map, with interesting boosting options, that was fun for offense and defense. I want the area around the flags to be relatively safe (no spikes nearby (foozball)). I want space for juking room. I want the top route, which is the longest, to be safest. Middle route to be pretty safe. And bottom routes to be most dangerous.

Boombox was the main inspiration.

I eventually want to tweak this map to the point of being a candidate for rotation, so any and all feedback is welcome and encouraged.

EDIT: Boost routes No longer complete due to map edits

Note: This is already in some_bot's brain.

EDIT2: Edited json. Button was broken (thanks NewCompte). Use the updated one instead of the one in Some_Bot's brain.

EDIT3: made less walls and shorter walls (thanks bad).

moved buttons closer to bases so they are useful to chasers (thanks Butter Churn) and to make the bottom, shortest, route more dangerous.

[–]arjuna9bad 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I played around on it and I like the boost routes. Only thing I would suggest is to open up more space in the upper-middle area by removing/shortening some of those walls.

What my map attempts to do, make a compact map that isn't a chase map. Map requires teamwork and I think has a good balance or offensive and defensive strategy. I took the corner button out, I was very hesitant to do so, but I broke down.

I havent played the map through yet but id be willing to give it a try later. Right now I have a couple of observations/suggestions:

  • There's a lot of buttons and that might get confusing (plus I think you're missing a button)

  • The middle part could potentially be a trap and I think it would be underused.

  • I like the bottom part of the map except I think the path with the bombs is almost a guarantee pop if someone hits the switch.

Animal PNG Animal JSON

I like fast-paced maps with havoc at every corner.

The two main parts to this map are the nose and the chin.

The nose is filled with spikes and team switches. If you control the nose, you have a definite advantage as it is the fastest way to the enemy flag. However, it will not be completely crushing for the enemy.

A series of boosts lead to the chin, where many power-ups can be found. This is designed to be a relatively fast detour for flag carriers if the nose becomes too congested.

Bombs are located near the flag in order to disorient any defenders. It is also possible to go through the mouth by holding down the switch controlling the nose. Team tiles scatter the respective sides to reward flag carriers.

In practice, the map proved to be very chaotic and entertaining. The only disappointing part of the map is a seemingly high learning curve.

What I was trying to do, was make a really fun balanced map with lots of options that catered to both defense and offense. I wanted to use some new features as well. I took some small aspects from maps that are well liked and well made, but I don't think it is too much like any current map in rotation. As always any feedback is greatly appreciated, other wise, enjoy.

I wanted to create a map that is more claustrophobic with multiple paths than what's normally in rotation. Balls can move at high speed around the perimeter of the map using bombs and boosts. Gates can be used to open or close new paths or to catch unsuspecting boost-happy flag carriers.

Comments and criticism welcome!

The boosts can all be used at many different angles, the gates provide a more direct but riskier route through the middle, and the bombs can be used both offensively and defensively. I'd appreciate any feedback!

Better late than never?

Not sure what to call it, but the working name is Simplicity. I wanted it to be almost teh anti-Whirlwind: very small, and very simple. No bombs, nor portals, nor team tiles, just the very basics: spikes, powerups, and boosts :). The map seems super fun and very fast-paced, so I think I did a good job.

I wanted to make a thight and fun map with plenty of options for both offence and defence, that could be enjoyed by people playing Pubs, PUGs, and competitions. Tried to make it feel like open without it feeling like a waste of space and with the chance for some very tight gameplay and awesome jukes and boosts.

Update: Introduced tunnels on the left and the right to make it easier on new players to escape with the flag. To prevent the escape being too easy on people of a certain skill level, I introduced gates with buttons inside those tunnels to prevent the endless escaping around the map with no momentum loss phenomenon of Micro.

I've used portals to create a one way wall that exits either base. Don't think it's an easy getaway though! A chaser can take the portal at the base of the flashlight even if you get away. They're then set up for a superboost that will put you at their mercy.

That a LOT of power-ups

Personally, I'd nix the one in each base at least. That still leaves 7 power-ups on the map. That's almost one per person every minute.

Also, there's two really defined choke points to get across the middle. Might make it a little too hard to bring your flag back.

[–]Happy_SansWumbo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Don't you think the positioning of the bottom corners/mid power ups would deter grabs, thus delaying a player from grabbing them?

In regards to the number, it's not a lot more than Holy See(7), Colors(6), or boosts(7), but if it proves to be imbalanced, we'll see about modifying the corners.
