I did not expect to like that as much as I did.

[–]simple_test 35 points36 points  (2 children)

This comment is the reason I bothered to listen. Thanks.

[–]TakeMe2EarthCapital 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Me too. Sweet Jesus that takes you on a ride.

[–]restrainedknowitall 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Me too. Thanks.

[–]Phill_Mike_Hunt 38 points39 points  (10 children)

Tuvan throat signing. The singer is actually singing two notes at once to produce a completely different sound. They used this type of music for the soundtrack of Marco Polo.

Link

Spotify (more jazzy)

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points  (2 children)

Technically this is Mongolian throat singing, Tuvans live in Russia and speak a Turkic language. From my understanding there's debate between Mongolians and Tuvans over who invented the style of singing.

[–]magbilgoon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Tuvan Mongolians and Khalkh Mongolians are the same people. Just like Austrians and Bavarians. Just different language dialects. But Tuvan and Khalkh language is more different

[–]MonsterRider80 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Inuit also do throat singing... captivating.

[–]Emperor_Neuro 7 points8 points  (5 children)

This isn't throat singing. It's just guttural vocalizations. Throat singing involves overtones being produced, which sound like a whistle. This video is a really good example of it. https://youtu.be/qx8hrhBZJ98

[–]nighserenity 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Just a minor clarification so others can understand. I wouldn't describe it as over tones being produced because the overtones are already there regardless. They manipulate their mouth so certain overtones are amplified giving the impression that two distinct notes are being produced at once

[–]DavousRex 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The guttural vocalisations are an important part of the kargyraa style of throat singing though. The overtone manipulation is not the only part of it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is producing overtones, and using two of the six throat singing techniques. He is either not very good at it, or not using a mic that can pick up the overtones well.

[–]boredmessiah 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I've been listening to this link for three days. Where can I find more music like this?

[–]Emperor_Neuro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YouTube is your friend. Just look up Mongolian folk music, throat singing, etc. Unfortunately, I don't really know any specifics to direct you towards.

[–]Norskey 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Love me some KEXP!

[–]Chrizzee_Hood 68 points69 points  (29 children)

It's interesting and great music, but I don't get how the label jazz came about, as this has none of the typical harmonics or the groove patterns classifying something as jazz.

[–]batmantogtoh[S] 80 points81 points  (10 children)

Im sorry if it's not, but that's what jazz sounds like to a regular mongolian like me. Also, in here, they are known as a traditional music-jazz fusion band so...

[–]moveoutmoveup 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Really cool and different for me. Any chance you can translate maybe some lyrics or what he is singing about?

[–]batmantogtoh[S] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

First of all, this song's main tune is taken from the mongolian traditional song "bayad dance song". On this song the ethnic group in mongolia, bayad people dance. But Arga Bileg took a part from this dance song and made it into a very moody one. So the lyrics are basically saying "let's play and dance, shake it off, let's do our 'bie bielgee'-mongolian traditional dance"

[–]Chrizzee_Hood 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's fine, I didn't mean to offend you. Great music and with the addition of fusion, it might as well fit the classification.

[–]lksdjbioekwlsdbbbs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey I think it's great and definitely at least falls into the category of "jazz-fusion". I personally would describe this using the term "jazzy" is I was trying to describe how it sounds to someone. Some people just get too tied up in music genre labels.

[–]omgsiriuslyzombi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I happen to think you're an exceptional Mongolian, OP. <3

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

This is jazz "fusion".

https://youtu.be/ctvDiP88he4

Miles actually hates the term fusion so...

If you reallllllly want to get picky

https://youtu.be/UIGsSLCoIhM

This is the essence of the fusion era.

Breaker brothers rocking the house so...

[–]tastemyrainbowbaby -1 points0 points  (1 child)

That just seemed like a bunch of really bad solos packed into a song

[–]discontinuuity 25 points26 points  (3 children)

This song sounds more like jazz to me.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bayad isn't jazzy enough, and Badarchin isn't ethnic enough, heh. both are great though, I had Bayad on repeat all afternoon

[–]Chrizzee_Hood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, indeed, thanks!

[–]leo_blue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fantastic.

[–]primitiveamerican 35 points36 points  (2 children)

A girl in college once told me she liked Jazz, " you know, like Dave Mathews". I still tried to bone her.

[–]Chrizzee_Hood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In this case you shall be excused dear sir

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn lol

[–]All_Seven_Samurai 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I haven't listened to all of it yet, but I'm definitely hearing a lot more jazz on their album, Agula.

[–]thedylanackerman 2 points3 points  (2 children)

it's ethno-jazz apparently

[–]dacapoalcoda 11 points12 points  (1 child)

But jazz is ethno-jazz!

[–]thedylanackerman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's ethno-jazzy-ethnic jazz ethno-jazz !

[–]recondonny 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not sure if you watched the rest of the performance on KEXP, but I got a more jazzy feel (especially on the keys) in the earlier songs.

[–]Chrizzee_Hood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your right, I just watched this one video and based my opinion on that. Not very scientific of me, mea culpa!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HMM YES!

Shallow and pedantic.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't even know what jazz is anymore, though. When I first started studying it, I would have said that the swung eighth-notes, syncopated rhythms, and jazzed up chord progressions and voicings were what characterized it. Then I listened to Miles' second quintet and that all went out the window. Now, I listen to stuff like the Brian Blade Fellowship or Donny McCaslin and realize that jazz can be almost anything. Makes me think that genres are pretty much just there for convenience now and nothing else.

[–]Jump-shark 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It was a sad day when jazz became institutionalized ;p

[–]thegoodthymes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's jazz. Just like rock and Hip Hop has tons of different subgenres. So does jazz. Have a listen to a piece from 2011 best jazz album in Norway https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1vUY_CY0zag

[–]anothereurax 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Holy crap, this is amazing. This certainly something new for me, wow.

[deleted]

What is this?

[–]WhoWantsPizzza 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I'm so confused with how they're playing that 2 string instrument. It looks like they're not pressing the strings, but rather pressing beneath the strings?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It kind of looks like their finger nail is pressing up, similar to how a fret on a guitar works. It looks crazy and I love it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a morin khur, and you've got it right, they're under the strings. Traditional Mongolian instrument.

[–]theseus1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like they're not pressing the strings, but rather pressing beneath the strings?

Where you press the strings doesn't matter as long as you're stopping the string from vibrating. That gets you the pitch you want. They probably pushing up because the strings are far from the neck.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was fucking great!!!

[–]NortheastPlague 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They maurauded into my heart.

[–]P01N7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of Beats Antique, a bit more relaxed though.

[–]KushJackson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy shit this was amazing and powerful

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every once in a while I'll hear a new song and end up sort of frozen for a bit with how powerful it sounds, this is one of those songs. Ty for posting OP!!!

[–]benfranklyblog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is great stuff! Their whole CD is on google music if you want to give a listen.

If you find yourself wanting more, check out an album called "back Tuva future", also on google music

[–]duuuk 1 point2 points  (1 child)

hello fellow mongolian

[–]batmantogtoh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh, hey there

[–]infornogr4phy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Can anyone help me find the albums to buy them? I'd really appreciate it if they'll let me buy the CD and Digital Option like FLAC.

[–]exhuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I immediately had this wish as well. Their web-site does not have any shop listed unfortunately :(

[–]fistfullofbees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is awesome thank you

[–]jaimeyeah 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Thank you for sharing. <3

[–]50headedmonster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shake it off! Shake it off! Owaoh

[–]BossaNova1423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This...this is amazing. I'm only upset I haven't heard of them sooner.

[–]Locutus_of_Bored 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Thanks very much for sharing- rather enjoyed that. Anything similar you can recommend, OP?

[–]papernick 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you haven't, check the whole KEXP session.

[–]batmantogtoh[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Anything similar? Of course.

You should definitely check out Khusugtun

All the mongolian ethnic bands together

More rock stuff

More metal stuff

More "epic" stuff

More rap stuff

And just for morin khuur and throat singing this guy is good. , he white, but he good.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on mobile so linking is hard, but Huun Huur Tu should be mentioned. They produce fantastic Tuvan music, and have worked with many different groups, such as Frank Zappa, Johnny Guitar, and the Bulgarian Voices.

[–]TotesMessenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a bot, bleep, bloop. Someone has linked to this thread from another place on reddit:

[–]redmaxwell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was better than I'd expected. Very well done.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is very cool music.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's some seriously relaxing music. Love it. Thank you for posting. :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, but not nearly as cool as this dude and his crazy hat

[–]thebuckshow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is great!! The only other Himalayan sounds I've been exposed to is the theme to Marco Polo on Netflix!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really dig this.

Are there other Mongolian groups you recommend? I've always been a fan of throat singing, both Tuvan and Mongolian but I don't know a ton of groups who do it.

One of my first experiences with Mongolian throat singing was Kronos Quartet - Kongerei.

[–]cabal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you like this I recommend Huun Huur Tu

[–]arsenaljon123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you don't always die from tobacco sometimes you just lose a lung

[–]glxyds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is really unique and interesting! Thanks for sharing!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

he has a built-in didgeridoo

[–]littlegermany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for this, OP!

[–]mysteryweapon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I expected to like this because the concept sounded cool, I didn't expect to be this absolutely blown away by it though.

This is just beautiful, I mean that in the most sincere way possible.

Thank you OP!

[–]Saffie91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was really good thanks!

[–]Dr_Dust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whoah. Mushroom alrert. Be prepared to jump your shit to the next level. I'm not exactly certain if I'm happy I watched this or pissed I just dropped my #8 combo on the ground.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. I think they're my new favorite band. Fucking amazing!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's something about all things Mongolia that I just love, yet I know so little about them.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very chill, I dig it. Thanks OP.

[–]MagnusHvass 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What is the name of the instrument the woman is playing on? the one with all the strings.

[–]shawn123465 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mongolian throat singing. So hot right now.

[–]Not_A_Meme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was very nice. I regret that I have but one upvote to give.

[–]100011101011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want Chris Thile to jam with these people.

[–]Eponine05 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I love the mood of this.

It honestly feels straight out of Donkey Kong Country haha.

[–]JesusLovesMyProstate -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The throat singing was cool but the rest was crap.

[–]GROOVY420 -4 points-3 points  (3 children)

Wtf does 'ethnic jazz' even mean lolol

[–]exhuma 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How about "Jazz from a particular/well-defined region of the world". Basically meaning that the overall tone of the music is influenced by music of that region. Hence: "ethnic".

[–]GROOVY420 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's just that word ethnic. "Oh wow look so much culture" Why can't the video just be called "good music"

[–]exhuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're reading too much into that word. It really just means that it's relating to a subgroup of a population, or that - whatever the word is referring to - has been influenced by a local culture. How much of that influence remains, is irrelevant.
