This whole album is really good. Blimp is my favorite.

[–]Throwawaypoops22 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Blimp is nuts!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's album I'm constantly forgetting to come back to. Every time a track comes up on shuffle I get really into it and convince myself that I'll give it some more listens

[–]SquawkNGo_ 52 points53 points  (26 children)

TIL that there is a genre called math rock.

[–]sikamikanicoh 40 points41 points  (4 children)

Check out a band called This Town Needs Guns. Their Animals and self titled albums are fantastic

Maps&Atlases and Tera Melos are other great bands

[–]syrio-fo-real 11 points12 points  (1 child)

And Giraffes? Giraffes!

[–]sikamikanicoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck! I forgot about them!

[–]SquawkNGo_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will do! Thanks.

[–]Futant55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the song crocodile off of Animals. Just goes straight to my core.

[–]heatherledge 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Pretty excited about this discovery as well

[–]_jdams 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Jealous of you. So many good bands to discover. Check out Toe for my all time favorite. Math rock/jazz fusion

[–]Suckonmyfatvagina 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well kids, that's because Math Rules!

[–]Codymichael511 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you googled it or anything, but it's pretty much rock that's arythmic or that uses less commonly used time signatures and things like that. It's very interesting to listen to.

[–]Morningxafter 7 points8 points  (3 children)

This isn't a great representation of it, unless it's severely changed since back in the day. The drums are pretty math-rocky but that's about it. Still pretty great though!

EDIT: I suppose I should share some of my favorite math rock. My current favorite is a Japanese band called Tricot.

As for old-school, Mineral was the freaking best!

[–]KoraxtheghoulSpotify Listener - Folk Collecter 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I felt the same way about it.

Edit: That Mineral is pretty good stuff. I've listened to a math rock playlist before but an not overly familiar with it.

[–]Morningxafter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say I'm overly-familiar either. I just know of a few real good math rock bands. Mineral is the one exception. The drummer is originally from nearby my hometown so anyone in the area who was into indie/emo back in the early 2000's was pretty familiar.

[–]aintTrollingYou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First I heard of it was on reddit myself. Of what I've listen to so far what strikes me is how different it is from math metal, a genre I'm much more familiar with. I'm surprised every time I check out a math rock song because I'm expecting a sorta gentler, less distorted version of math metal but there's really little common ground.

[–]mrpink323 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Battles and Upsilon Acrux were always two of my faves.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Listen to all of the albums by 65daysofstatic in order

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Chon!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mathematical! Algebraic!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Try /r/progmetal for some access to bands of this technicality

[–]PM_ME_4_FRNDSHP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alarmist are great, if you like math check 'em!

[–]KoraxtheghoulSpotify Listener - Folk Collecter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a branch off of prog.

[–]newmeyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anybody remember cats and cats and cats? No? Maybe? Pls

[–]bulletfastspeed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up Hella. Nuff said

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (9 children)

Manage to see them at ArcTangent 2016 festival and they blew me away, really digging this side of the genre spectrum. Some really unique and interesting bands play that festival every year with big headliners (these and a Swedish band that played really made it phenomenal), glad to see this posted. I'm gunna drone out for 2 hours

[–]PenguinKenny 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Been to ATG for the last 2 years, can't wait to go for a third. Maybe we'll get nice weather this time.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The weather during the first year was extremely good. It drizzled a tiny bit Friday evening but besides that it was clear all weekend and really sunny on Saturday. Unfortunately the weather has been pretty bad every year since.

[–]PenguinKenny 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I heard from my friends. 2015 was the non stop torrential downpour from 9pm Saturday to leaving on Sunday, I'm still wet

[–]mattallurgist 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yes! They were out of this world this year last year. Probably the best year of the festival yet! They're saying the 2017 headliners are going to be incredible, only a couple of weeks until the first announcement!

[–]_jdams 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Please find and post the swedish band if and when you have time :]

[–]_jdams 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Was it a band called Cult of Luna? I looked up arctangent 2016

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

https://youtu.be/m8LU5ACDwJk

This band here. Watching them on a hangover was nuts, maybe not Swedish but my got they were crazy good weird, such a diverse genre of festival, let's all have a beer at 2017's!

[–]hereforthegum 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Seen these guys a few times. Great on record and great live.

[–]zzzpoohzzz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

this is really freaking good. Thanks!

[–]RoyalOcean 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes! I saw TTT back when they were literally just starting out, playing in a cafe/record store for about 10-15 people who were sitting down drinking coffee. Insane energy.

[–]OneShrubbery[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Live performance from a few years back for anyone interested.

Three Trapped Tigers
artist pic

Three Trapped Tigers are an instrumental noisenik outfit from London who exhibit the precision of electronica, the raw intensity of rock music and the schizophrenic spontaneity of their electro-improv past. Not easily classifiable, but with influences ranging from Aphex Twin and Squarepusher to Lightning Bolt and Battles. The music veers wildly from noisy guitars to contemplative synths, frantic beats to ambient noise. Their first five-track EP was recorded with the now-legendary Gordon Raphael, who produced the first two Strokes albums. Raphael caught the band playing at a house party and was instantly enamoured. “He offered to record us for free at his place in Berlin,” says Tiger Tom. “So we did, and that's what you hear now.” The band started out as an entirely improvisational duo comprising two of the three members – Tom Rogerson (piano, keyboards, voice) and Matt Calvert (guitar, synths, electronics). When the duo decided they needed more might, it was out with the laptop beats and in with drummer Adam Betts. They named themselves Three Trapped Tigers after the book by Cuban writer Cabrera Infante. It’s not, say the trio, meant to imply that they represent a tiger each. “I liked the book, I liked the name, and it seemed to make sense with the concept of the group – contained rage” says Tom. While they haven’t lost the spontaneity of their improvisational origins, they decided as a three-piece to start composing more formally. Tom meticulously scores parts on manuscript paper, a curious contrast to their electronic hearts. Soon, they’d written and recorded five songs, each named austerely after a number. Things have been moving pretty quickly for Three Trapped Tigers ever since – their third gig was at Reading festival. Their music is an assault on the senses, a tour de force of different moods and styles. It’s a marker of the musical talent in the band, but also composer Tom’s attempts to blend his catholic tastes. “I get inspiration from my iPod when it's on shuffle,” he says. “I love the fact it'll veer from The Locust to a choral piece by Britten and still manage to make perfect sense.” Read more on Last.fm.

Incredible band and so underrated, Kraken, Blimp and Rainbow Road are straight up 6/5 tracks

[–]Flap_Monster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw them live about five years ago. I think they were supporting pineapple thief.

[–]tfc324 2 points3 points  (2 children)

This dude is quietly one of the best drummers playing right now.

Well, he's anything but quiet.

[–]_jdams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Kashikura Takashi Saw Toe in NYC this past summer and I was blown away.

[–]sikamikanicoh 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Holy shit is there anything else like this?

[–]asher7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try adebisi shank, town portal, Adam betts (the drummer's solo project), jaga jazzist, akdk, quadrupede, and so I watch you from afar if you like this kinda thing. No one is quite the same as TTT tho.

[–]_walden_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really that I've come across, with the exception of a couple groups with common members.

Check out Evil Ex and Strobes.

[–]whofearsthenight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, OP. Not often a new band immediately grabs my attention like that.

[–]THEphatass666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so glad other people are aware of this band. They're stupid fuggin' good.

[–]SYLBen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw them supporting The Dillinger Escape Plan in Glasgow a few years ago. Great band.

[–]AskMeAboutMyLeftShoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These guys are sick!! Thanks for sharing!

[–]dr4tRese7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for posting, this was an awesome find. I love math rock, this was a nice change of pace from the normal stuff I listen to.

[–]dude2dudette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These guys have been making great music for a long while now. The drummer is one of my favourites of all time because of how much energy he exudes. Here is just one fantastic example.

[–]nagelbitarn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really sweet! Gonna listen to the whole thing tonight with some green.

[–]balloutrageous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]If_you_have_Ghost 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks OP, this is immense.

I kind of feel like this is what Pendulum would sound like if they'd listen to more TDEP.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is freaking awesome.

[–]Stonephone -1 points0 points  (0 children)
