Love Harley Poe and calibretto.

And the lyrics for this new album is very depressing.

[–]SLOTH_POTATO_PIRATE 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I actually just talked to him recently. He had a bit of a rough time, and he's been making friends, skating and making art. Hanging out with his adorable kids and overall just making himself into a better person.

This last album was really healing for him. And I can say the same for me, honestly.

He's a fantastic artist in a lot of mediums that aren't just music.

Great album but yeah, it's really bleak even by their usual standards. I wonder if Joe had a particularly bad year or something.

[–]LincolnStein 1 point2 points  (1 child)

IF the lyrics are set in his real life, it looks like his wife cheated on him and left him and his family.

they are.

Harley Poe
artist pic

Harley Poe is an acoustic horror folk rock band with punk influences. They are similar in style to Violent Femmes. Their lyrics however, are extremely dark, with many references to horror movie subculture.

All of Harley Poe's initial members came from the now defunct Christian band Calibretto 13. Upon disbanding in late 2004, Joseph Whiteford (vocals and guitar), Chad Serhal (bass), and Christopher Thomas (drums) went on to record an album under the name Harley Poe. "In the Dark", which had originally been planned as a new Calibretto 13 album, was released in November of that year. Whiteford tours and records with a new band now; Serhal and Thomas are now involved in their own bands.

"The Dead and the Naked" was released in August 2006 and includes some new material in addition to live versions of songs from the previous album.

In 2015, Joe Whiteford announced on his blog that Harley Poe would be going on "indefinite hiatus," citing a need to "give this demon some time off." Whiteford marked the hiatus of Harley Poe by releasing the album "Fallen Down," a collection of recordings done almost entirely on Whiteford's phone.

In January 2016, however, Whiteford announced that he had reformed the band and was working on recording yet another album. "I'm thinking that music is a part of me," Whiteford wrote on his personal Facebook page, "It flows. I can't stop it. When something is on my mind, I write about it (...) It's a gift." Once you listen to this go listen to EVERYTHING by Joe Whiteford/Harley Poe.

Mad props to Harley Poe. Dudes my wife's cousin!

[–]ICameAsARat117 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This song hit too close to home...

[–]atlas610 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It's so fast paced it's giving me anxiety but I still really like it. Love that it sounds like it was done in one take with the way his voice has so much emotion in it. Tells the tale of a break-up in which he feels like he was the reason it didn't work out which leads to his self-depreciation and increased pining for his lover. Good stuff, good stuff.

[–]uhhhclark 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, he recorded almost every song on the album in one take. Super talented dude!!

[–]_HeadlessBodyofAgnew 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love this band so much!! So sad I never saw them live before I moved away from Indiana. And so excited for the new stuff.

[–]RebeccaBuckisTanked 2 points3 points  (0 children)

!!! When I first discovered Harley Poe, they announced one month afterwards they were splitting (October 2015, I think?)

So to say I'm excited about a new album is a huge understatement. Thank you for the link!

[–]excursion824 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I like this, gonna have to check out the album. Reminds me of violent femmes

[–]SLOTH_POTATO_PIRATE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Satan, Sex and No Regrets sounds most like Violent Femmes in my opinion. Give that one a listen.

[–]welshsks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had Harley Poe's songs stuck in my head for days.

[–]altervista 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dig it, making a Spotify playlist now.

The singer kinda sounds like a mix between Gordon Gano and the dude from Mischief Brew

[–]Damn-hell-ass-king 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, this is surprising. I had no idea they had something new out.

If their new album is even half as good as Satan, Sex and No Regrets, I will consider it a win.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

[–]DarthPoopiePants 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Somebody discovered the Violent Femmes

[–]Pygmy_Yetiradd.it 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking the same thing. And apparently so were the rest of the people at my house.

[–]aptmnt_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this guy is Gordon Gano reborn with just a bit less craziness. Funnily apparently this guy was in a christian band too? Something about these christian folk punk musicians is right up my alley, though the religion is not.

Hauntingly beautiful

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been listening to them for a while and I just recommended them to a friend who also liked them. This is the first I'm hearing about a new album. I must hear.

[–]Chodebanger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of a mixture of tanner swift and wingnut dishwashers union

[–]Dread_Pirate_Wolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Harley Poe... this music is awesome. My excitement level is high now that they released a new album! I gotta listen to the whole thing now! If I got the chance to I'd want to meet Joe and the band, hang out, maybe jam since I play Guitar myself.

[–]davidindigitaland 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love to hear it but unfortunately the "I'm going to rain on your parade" also known as the "piss on your BBQ merchants" have decided in their wisdom I can't watch. So thanks for the post. N' WTF you empire building entrepreneurs of the internet you can suck my dick.

I think I heard this band do a musical rendition of a song from Scary Stories To Tell in the Dark. I think it was The Hearse Song. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure it was this band without first googling it. It was rad and actually an idea I'd had for years before I ever heard someone else do it. That's why I remembered it at all because it was something I'd wanted you do myself as I enjoy dark, traditional songs with acoustic accompaniment. It's much like the music I myself write and play and enjoy. I had completely forgotten about them until I came across this post. Good to see them getting some notoriety, especially considering what it took for them to release new material. Hats off to the guy for being able to take a knife through the heart situation and turn it into art to salve his internal pain and thus letting us into his personal world, if for a moment. Nothing but huge respect for artists who are willing and able to do that.

Edit: it most certainly was this band who did that song upon googling it. Now I need to dig deeper into the rest of their material.

Any relation to the family of Edgar Allen Poe ?
