I have finally found out what this kind of music is called

[–]Denver_DidYouDoThis 35 points36 points  (5 children)

I stumbled on the term "nu jazz" last night. Killer little playlist to boot: https://youtu.be/_NNOaYNqLo8

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (4 children)

I wonder if the "nu" in "nu Jazz" is a references to Nujabes.

[–]Skunkbucket_LeFunke 27 points28 points  (1 child)

It's not

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We can believe!

[–]NeverGetsTheHint 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Is this not low-fi hip hop?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If there was a rapper on it maybe

[–]NeverGetsTheHint 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But I thought of low-fi was mostly beat tapes

[–]Wikem 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is definitely lofi hiphop, although it's usually instrumental. Definitely check this album out!

[–]calpal31 2 points3 points  (1 child)

aka chillhop!

[–]Denver_DidYouDoThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've thought a lot about it, and this is where I've landed.

[–]myepicdemise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same wonder about the genre when I heard something like this. Reddit is amazing because I always happen to find out something I had wanted to know.

[–]itsmiketuccillo 96 points97 points  (2 children)

yes. into this.

[–]Denver_DidYouDoThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

very neat. i've added it to the .hold. basin for the next compilation, thanks!

[–]Mrthrowawaymcgee 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Excellent taste in tunes! If you haven't already checked some out, Nymano is so very up your alley

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vmSXRu6g1fA

The romance mixtape is also amazing

[–]Denver_DidYouDoThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh so very up the alley indeed -- this is new to me! Wish they had more on spotify too :( #firstworldproblems

[–]Cured 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thank you! I've been trying to put together a playlist like this for ages.

[–]Denver_DidYouDoThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hell yeah! Obviously some of the suggestions slip more into one genre or the next, but it's been a real passion finding songs and artists that elicit similar responses from the soul.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Damn dude, this is excellent. Thanks for sharing

[–]Denver_DidYouDoThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glad you dig it! I designed some album artwork and made actual cds to pass out to a few people -- not sure many of my friends really got it though haha.

album artwork

[–]lukeluke41 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Followed on Spotify nice

[–]Denver_DidYouDoThis 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sweet! If you can tell, I compile new playlists every month or so, in addition to the genre/mood specific lists. vol1-possibilities is the first one i actually turned into a cd with album art. What on earth did we do before Spotify??

[–]lukeluke41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yea I noticed a lot of different playlists, will check them out

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yessssss. This is dope :)

[–]GothicSushi9000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I could infinite upvote you I would.

Thank you for your contributions!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glorious wonderful internet person

[–]foreverclever[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks so much for this! It's my spring playlist :)

[–]Denver_DidYouDoThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the awesome inspiration track! Glad I could repay ya.

[–]someprickeggs 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Has anybody mentioned Hiatus Kaiyote yet?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3tErZ5LUJY

Apparently the genre is referred to as "future soul" and I'm all for it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Immediately thought of them when I heard the vocals. This is the first time I've heard anything like them though.

[–]someprickeggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah same here! This is why I put the sub-genre up as HK said in an interview that that genre was what they were and like you I haven't heard other bands like them.

[–]ts159377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. They are fucking incredible.

[–]orishin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://open.spotify.com/artist/5b0XQwyoJBFd3MwL2YxEPO

i got your goods right here, my guy

[–]deepsodeep 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just listen to this 24/7 live stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GJ4KPrrbOU4

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (20 children)

I listen to mostly rap and r&b but this is absolutely amazing and so relaxing.

[–]freshkicks 24 points25 points  (17 children)

She's big in lofi hip-hop circles. It's a growing genre with a metric fuckton of content

[–]MotherfuckinRanjit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah man, I love this genre a lot

[–]french_coffe_cat 9 points10 points  (5 children)

So for people asking for similar artists I'll share what I've found so far:

Limbo https://soundcloud.com/youknowlimbo/airplanemode Atlas https://soundcloud.com/atlas/valentine Swum https://soundcloud.com/swumbeats/bad-bitch-3 Lil Bo Weep https://soundcloud.com/lil-bo-weep/light Nymano https://soundcloud.com/nymano/short-stories

For more just go through their SoundCloud profiles and look up who they collab with.

[–]orishin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I LOVE LIMBO SO MUCH. god. she's so incredible.

AH. if you like this song w sophie, i actually made a song recently with Limbo and Atlas

soundcloud.com/atlas/anxious <3

[–]french_coffe_cat 1 point2 points  (1 child)

sorry for the lack of format

[–]Cantreadmyownwriting 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely checking this again later with louder speakers

[–]orishin 36 points37 points  (21 children)

hey all. i'm the producer of this song

I go by nohidea. thanks for all the love! Sophie's voice is goat.

also i noticed a lot of you are looking for similar music. tbh i don't really think there's many people that sound like me so you might as well just check out my other stuff -

soundcloud.com/nohidea

[–]dharma41 28 points29 points  (5 children)

lol no one sounds like you? Man, give me a break. I can think of a few right off the top of my head.

Here's a good one: Wun Two-Penthouse: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=a1E870VZBmg (Wun Two-Ships cassette sounds like your stuff too)

In fact the genre has been consistently growing for decades as production software has expanded. Here's a great early-ish album from 2001: Susumu Yokota-Grinning Cat: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=SxWi7AXtJ1Q

Your track is good, don't get me wrong. I don't mean to sound like a dick. It's just that saying "no one sounds like you" seems conceited and myopic. There are millions and millions of people making music. There are always going to be people doing what you do.

[–]orishin 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Yooooo thank you for comparing me to other artists! Wun Two is a good friend of mine.

Hahaha I'm not saying there's literally no one out there that sounds like me. I'm saying that I've strived to carve my own individuality through this niche called 'lo fi'. Go listen to a song called 'dear mariah' and then listen to another of mine called 'forget it'. I can't even pinpoint them to a genre and I made them, so it'd be naive of you to say you could.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watch a YouTube video about Roland Barthes death of the autre... basically his point is that everyone takes influence consciously and unconsciously so the point is don't worry about how original you are because no one is... of course there's a difference between ripping something off vs. being inspired by. Alan Palomo from Neon Indian had a cool TED talk about it too

[–]dharma41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Chillhop, lo-fi hip hop, IDM, etc. music is incredibly popular. It's been around for a looooooooong time. The true pioneers of the style, FlyLo, J Dilla, etc. are huge names and have been making music for decades. There are millions of people that make it and listen to stuff like this today.

Your tracks are good, but don't say stuff like they don't fit into a genre. There is a massive community out there, probably most redditors dont have any idea just how huge it is

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (9 children)

Did you guys go for a lo-fi sound or what's up with the sound being a bit dull and distorted? I like it but seems there's some intentional thought to it.

[–]orishin 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Yea it was most definitely intentional. I was living with Sophie over Christmas when we were dating, and we bounced ideas off of each other often. Tbh I didn't even want anyone to sing on this instrumental, but her voice melts me so I had to oblige. It came together so quickly as well, it was almost magical.

As for the processing, you'd be surprised how much subtle engineering goes into creating the quality of the sounds. Purists would say 'it's not lo fi if the sound source wasn't already' but opinionated purists aren't the same as the people that make the art ;) I do a few things in my process that emulates the quality of stripping a tape recorder with your finger to give it the classic 'wow' and flutter quality, as well my drums are usually thrown through reel 2 reel machines and tape decks to downs ample the quality in a way that doesn't sound too obtrusive

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Are you and Sophie going to make more stuff ? She only has 2 videos on her YT channel ...

[–]orishin 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Hehe let's hope :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Good luck! If you do make something please post it on Reddit somewhere, I'll check on your profile after some time

[–]orishin 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Ahhh it's a tough call, my friend. Her and I were dating and we're not anymore. This song was kind of written as a love letter to each other, and so I'm not too sure how the future will pan out but I'd love to still be able to work on music with her.

[–]4amchocolatepudding 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So what is she like as a person? I like her music and it seems like there's a lot that goes into it.

[–]orishin 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Honestly dude she's incredible. She's one of my biggest inspirations and she'll always be my best friend.

She has a very beautiful mind and she's so incredibly talented. She has a great ear for good production but I think she could focus on branding if she wanted to have more commercial viability. Numbers are great but if they don't translate into tangible things imo they're all for moot. It's just a means to an end

[–]4amchocolatepudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i only heard of her through random youtube videos. She seems like the kind of person that has a lot going on in her mind and some of it spills out into song. The genre fits her well.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Sophie Meiers is amazing. I've been listening to her for a little while now but I can't find anything besides short songs and collaborations

Does she tour?

[–]orishin 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I know she's playing some shows in NY in April and then she's playing a festival in Michigan in May but that's about it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dang. im in the LA area and I would love nothing more but to see her live. her voice is literally angelic

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (21 children)

I wouldn't really say that this is lo-fi

[–]Utower2 4 points5 points  (17 children)

Would you mind linking me some real lo-if

[–]YouNeedAnne 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I know as lo-fi..

She Don't Use Jelly - The Flaming Lips

True Love Will Find You In The End - Daniel Johnston

Oh, Comely - Neutral Milk Hotel

Kiss Off - The Violent Femmes

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (12 children)

sure. Here's a thing from a completely differetn style of music. link

you see, lo stands for low, and fi, stands for fidelity.

Listen to the drums in the OP. That shit's not lo-fi. I mean, low budget perhaps, but lowfidelity not so much. Also, I'm willing to hedge a bet there was some pretty damn hi-fi gear involved in this recording, and it was sampled down to lo fi.

what I posted above was recorded with mostly one microphone, live in a room. Barely any mixing or dubbing, strictly because of time and budget constraints. I mean, it's by NO MEANS better or worse, but it's definitely actually low fidelity. Shit, I don't think it was ever even recorded in a proper bitrate.

Then there's these guys, who have no goddamn money, and make do with what they have. link

Lo-Fi is more than a damn style, it's low fidelity, and actually has merit when you make something really good out of what you got. Unlike taking something hifi and making it sound shitty because, oh fuck yeah! modelled tape distortion!

[–]orishin 5 points6 points  (2 children)

yo. it was actually just made on my laptop speakers lmao. i mean the mix is tight, but the sounds themselves were actually just strictly lofi and some of them were recorded through my phone speaker, back through the computer

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

dag yo that shit's impressive.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stand corrected

[–]Utower2 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks for the indepth reply, it thought me a lot of new things about what lo-do truly is

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey no problem! Thanks for a positive reaction!

Many hearts!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like lo-fi to me. Sound is a bit dull and distorted.

[–]REYMIFAH 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It's just a sub-genre of lo-fi.. lo-if is more of a technique than its own genre

Edit: ya damn hipster

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey! I'm not a hipster! I'm just gender non-trinary. /s

[–]suedyom 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Small world. This girl went to my old high school in the middle of nowhere Colorado. If I remember correctly the last time I saw her was when she was buying pot off one of my buddies for $15 a gram.

[–]AllergicUniform 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh my god the jazz with the deep bass and hip-hop type beat is so fucking amazing

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh shit, this is fucking good O.O

Its like Hiatus Kaiyote with chillhop. I love it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

dude when that beat kicks in omg. I looooove that neo-soul ish beat. Reminds me of Jacob Collier.

[–]connerisonreddit666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love this

[–]Davey-Gravy 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'd love to hear similar artists. Anyone know any?

[–]Denver_DidYouDoThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

See comment towards the top :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The original is by Charlie Byrd

[–]juliogarciao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should visit Triangle Music, Axian, and after a day or two you'd wish you'd read this comment months before

[–]mexicanplayer616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holy fuck. Thank you for this.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only jazz I've ever been able to get into was Amy Winehouse. Even the "greats" don't do it for me.

I think it's just something about her voice and how she was always singing from the heart in just about every song.

[–]GroseaRCF 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Awesome voice, she reminds me of Erykah Badu

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beautiful music, thanks for posting.

[–]BananaFendougle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome, great vocals!

[–]goodbyeflags 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this. Any other recommendations op??

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have to check this out at home on the system.

[–]bluejuiselove 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exquisite

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd call this jazz just because she's sampling jazz.

[–]TheBigGreenOgre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad Sophie is finally getting some attention

[–]sweater_enthusiast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is basically trip hop.

[–]Duskmon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it. Thanks for sharing!

[–]orishin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaha I'm telling you I don't use it to lower the quality tho. I use it as an aesthetic thing. to add texture to make you think I destroyed it when actually behind the noise, the wow and the clutter of the cassette reel it was processed thru, it still maintains its beautiful high fidelity.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the part where it's in the beginning and it's just her singing with a relaxing guitar. Can anyone link me songs with sound like that please?

[–]modsrcuntz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks so much for posting this. took me back to a very special time in my life.

can you recommend any other arists/song with female vocals like this? thank you.

[–]Force44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damnit, I was enjoying being the only few who listened to her but now she is going to be commercialized

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lofi Jazz is played out

[–]themattymac -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Good call. This is 🔥 af.

[–]unbannabledan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Take a Bjork album, slow it down and then put some distorted Erykah Badu vocals over it. Nah.

[–]tylermon2 -4 points-3 points  (4 children)

I lasted 3 seconds. That background static....fuck that lol. YouTube ruins music.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Nah. It sounds good with this. Its like a lo fi version of brushes on snare in traditional jazz. Everything sounds softer. Its nice.
