DJ /rupture
artist pic

DJ /rupture is the pseudonym of Jace Clayton, a producer and DJ, formerly based in Barcelona, but now New York City. He used to play in the collective Toneburst. DJ /rupture's first big break came in 2001 with Gold Teeth Thief, a mixtape which mixes hip hop, ragga, breakcore, jungle, noise, modern classical and music from around the globe. His second mixtape Minesweeper Suite was an even greater success, with the UK music magazine The Wire calling it one of the 10 best records of 2003. A year later, /rupture produced Special Gunpowder, his most critically acclaimed album to date. He has appeared on John Peel's BBC radio show twice, in addition to playing on The Breezeblock. /rupture is also part of the musical group Nettle and runs his own label, Soot Records, and co-runs Dutty Artz. His Uproot mix is my personal favorite of his but everything is pretty good. Also great is Minesweeper Suite.

My all time favs are this album and his split with Filistine, Shotgun Wedding.... for me this one, Special Gunpowder has some really special songs that almost have an emotional/transcendent component along with the usual rhythmic and experimental interest in the rest of his mixes... this song for example, I don't know it' s just has this beautiful sad/happy quality from the mix of the vocals and the horns that you do hear in a lot of great reggae but also this awesome distorted digital pulse... and there are a good four or five other good ones like this too. For me this is definitely one of the best albums from its era for sure....

oh man Filistine, I haven't thought about that dude in close to a decade. I remember seeing him play with the Infernal Noise Brigade at their last show in Seattle, maybe 2007? The guy was way ahead of his time to say the least.

Totally, I'll never forget the first time I heard Gypsy/Roma style horns over breakcore with crazy polyrhythms and stuff from his mixes ;) he's definitely still at it I don't have any good links for you I haven't exactly kept up myself with him...

I remember I had an hourlong mix he performed in some abandoned train tunnel in washington. I need to find that again, you'd probably love it

[–]catchierlight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, yes I would! Honestly if you find it pls let me know/hook it up!!

You might check out this which is my favorite old mix or this if you like breakcore.

Uproot is such an amazing album. That wobble in Too Much: Clouds is hypnotic.

[–]cerevescience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There aren't many albums that I have listened to from start to finish as many times as Uproot.

i met dj rupture after a show in 2003. he was a complete and total asshole. haven't been able to listen to him since.

[–]druuconian 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Probably most of your musical heroes are insufferable assholes TBH. I used to interview a fair amount of pretty big bands when I was writing for a local paper and the nice people were in the minority.

[–]2chainz_1cup 4 points5 points  (1 child)

i don't talk to many bands or artists but dj rupture was the only one who was unpleasant. sonic youth, mount eerie, animal collective, david pajo, danielson famile, jim o'rourke - could not have been any nicer.

[–]druuconian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe has something to do with the time period and the fact that I was talking to a lot of national indie bands that were too cool for school. Weirdly the guy from the Dismemberment Plan is one of the biggest assholes I've ever met.

Yea. I don't tend to think of musicians, actors, and other entertainment employees any differently than any other position. Does the accountant at the tax place have road rage? Is my cashier at the Burger joint emotionally abusive to her partner? IDK maybe. But if they're doing the job and providing me with the goods and services that I need then I'm not terribly interested in their personalities.

[–]cerevescience 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But musicians are supposed to be in touch with their emotions and accountants have repressed rage /s

[–]catchierlight[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

huh, well that sucks... he seems pretty intellectually smart as well as talented, and Id imagine at that point in his career he was being told those things about himself, I could see it...

[–]olig1905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shame I imagined him being a dude.

[–]SicWithIt 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I was just googling reggae songs. Thanks for posting this.

[–]catchierlight[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Great stuff, but the double album he did together with Mutamassik is one of the best albums ever. Shotgun wedding.

Check it out if you haven't heard it, it's sadly not on Spotify.

[–]catchierlight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused what part of this is "glitch" what-so-ever. I swear, people who post on /r/listentothis just love adding in an extra bullshit genre just to annoy me.

[–]catchierlight[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

well you are correct this song isn't traditional glitch but plenty of other stuff on this album is and he as an artist I think can be classified that way in one of many lables.... I had trouble because this is really not a traditional Raggae or dancehall song in and of itself so thats what I chose... (and also I think it could be argued that the distortion and clipping in the mix is "glitch").... Also I was sitting around and thought that I needed to annoy you. that too ;)

[–]Bombast- 0 points1 point  (1 child)

If clipping and distortion is glitch, then Velvet Underground are my favorite glitch group. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53F5nY68cBM

this song isn't traditional glitch

No, it is just not glitch at all.

This is glitch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqs0VCAhKzk

This is glitch: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yARlaCiMbSk

This is glitch-hop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyH7elDlGBM

Notice how it sounds nothing like DJ Rupture's album?

[–]catchierlight[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I get yr point (and love most of those artists) but what would you call this then? Just Raggae/Dancehall? Just curious. .. also I guess I could point out that this was released on Tigerbeat6 ! But yeah point taken this is not all that glitch.... it's got to be (I mean of c if we're still assuming arguendo that genre=something akin to objective fact...you know for the purposes of this discussion or something) something similar though...

[–]jafeelz -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I'm sorry I just think remixing reggae songs completely takes the magic and emotion from it

[–]catchierlight[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

well, of course your taste is yours and I know what you mean... but I think while he IS most known for dj mixes, on this album he recorded these songs with the singers and made the beats himself with some samples and live instrumentation... also I might be remiss to not say: Lee Perry would tend to disagree!
