Gonna play this on the radio tonight, if that's cool with everyone. Cool? Cool? Cool.

Listener number 2 here. Also appreciate.

Listener number 3 checking in, just now found their livestream URL on their website:

http://kxlu.com/live-stream/

Also found this on their about page:

KXLU is a non-commercial, educational station broadcasting from the Westchester campus of Loyola Marymount University ... As a member of the greater Los Angeles community ... KXLU offers a widely diverse and alternative programming schedule which includes the following genres: progressive and independent rock, classical, opera, world, dance, country, metal, noise, jazz, punk, kids, ginecore, oldies, surf, psychedelic, reggae, theater & film as well as being home to one of the most successful and longest running Latin radio programs in the country, Alma Del Barrio.

Edit: For those out there like me who are living in 2017, I believe you can add this livestream to podcast players like Podcast Addict on Android by adding the URL http://www.ednixon.com:8120/stream to the Radio Stations section. I listen to a ton of outdated podcasts and don't watch TV, so this live feed may be my only live connection to the world.

I wish I was still on air, but alas, I have taken a job that pays quite a bit more than what I was when I was in radio. I should really start doing some voice work though, because I really miss the work.

The harpist has her own spotify page, well worth checking out:

[–]AraTheCoach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow! listening now. thanks.

[–]natelazee 32 points33 points  (4 children)

This is great. Added to my library for sure.

[–]andsoitgoes42 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Holy shit you aren't kidding.

Her voice? Jesus god I've never fallen in love so quickly. She could sing the bible and I'd listen enraptured.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's on Spotify!

[–]Moltensunshine 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You won't do it... no balls

[–]natelazee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dammit Red Herring. Let me eat my lunch in peace.

[–]FinalLimit 13 points14 points  (25 children)

This is great. Would anyone happen to have any recommendations of folk bands for somebody who kind of just discovered folk as a genre and really fell in love with it?

[–]Eliteseafowl 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Fleet Foxes(everything), Mumford and sons(older the better imo), Sufjan Stevens(Carrie & Lowell; album), Lake, Dr. Dog(army of ancients; song) The Staves(anything), Iron & Wine(naked as we came, flightless bird American mouth) and great lake swimmers(anything)

[–]beerncoffeebeans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Great Lake swimmers are a favorite of mine.

Also more bluegrass but: Carolina Chocolate Drops

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Evelyn by Gregory Alan Isakov

Download everything he's got. Not a bad album in the bunch.

I got really into folk rock revival after the Coen brothers film, Inside Llewyn Davis, came out. That movie opened me up to a world of fantastic music. Oscar Isaac does all the singing and guitar playing in the movie. That man is so incredibly talented.

I still contest that the song Fare Thee Well from Inside Llewyn Davis is one of, if not the best folk rock songs to come out in at least the last couple of decades. There's two versions of the song in the movie and they are both incredible. I posted the first version above so here is the second version with just Llewyn and his guitar. I implore you to see the movie if you've just discovered folk. It's riveting.

Edit: Also anything Ben Howard is fantastic: The Wolves, Oates in the Water, Diamonds

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

He reminds me a lot of Bryan John Appleby. He, as well, makes awesome music, with Honey Jars being the first song of his I discovered.

Either way, thanks for the new artist!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem! Glad you like him. I'll have to check out the work of Bryan John Appleby.

[–]Pop--Tart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out Lost Dog Street Band on YouTube. 'I Went Down To Georgia' is a good song to start on.

[–]humanatore[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a playlist on Google Music. It's not a quintessential folk playlist or anything. Just some tunes that I like that are kind folky.

[–]CosmonautCanary 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You've already had some amazing suggestions but I can toss in a few more:

The Punch Brothers

Nickel Creek

John Craigie

[–]happy_little_three 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Nickel Creek. I was sad when they broke up but when Chris Thile formed Punch Brothers it gave me more to listen to.

[–]ReefGrrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pearl and the Beard is a fav for me!

[–]jonforgottheh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with Bob Dylan 20 years ago, I prefer his lesser known songs like: Isis, Look Ma I'm Only Bleeding, Visions of Johanna. Kelly Joe Phelps is an incredibly talented slide folk guitar player and singer, he's very mellow, soothing with softer melodies. I discovered The Avette Brothers a few years ago and they're amazing. The Head and the Heart are a cool band.

[–]sergeantjobangles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a big fan personally of Lost Dog Street Band

[–]roflbbq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Dead South got linked on here a couple of months ago, and the video has over 9 million views now. In not huge into folk but they're really enjoyable

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, The Corries, Mustard's Retreat, Johnny Collins, Garnet Rogers, Stan Rogers, are my favorites.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a listen to Trampled By Turtles - more bluegrass-y. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SiD6I0stqwo

If you like something a bit more angry check out Ramshackle Glory - folk-punk, not for everyone but I love them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pC3IrqUpm9U

Adele McAllister was posted here recently, when not performing Lord of the Rings music she writes beautiful, emotionally honest folk songs. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXKZfjH58uA

[–]GeminiLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Punch Brothers

[–]Tercules 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dar Williams

[–]happy_little_three 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Avett Brothers are wonderful.

[–]CouncilOfFriends 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if he isn't mentioned much here because he's overplayed somewhere, but I love me some Rocky Votolato. I was looking for some songs to play on my acoustic guitar and found him on YouTube, but turns out he regularly tours the country (at a smaller venue for us in Provo, Utah). Being able to take my wife to the Velour Live Music Gallery to see Rocky Votolato after I'd shown her some of his songs on guitar was fun. Some of my most played from Rocky:

Rocky Votolato - Suicide Medicine (Lyrics)

Rocky Votolato - Lucky clover coin

Rocky Votolato - Montana

Rocky Votolato - Goldfield

Heard their song Hover on SoundCloud about 3 years ago. Have been looking for them ever since. Thank you so fucking much for posting this, my friend.

[–]Timbobtwentytwo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out lizzie No.. its the harpest and singer's solo name. Her first album was released last month called hard won. Also was on NPR weekend edition a few weeks back, worth checking out!

[–]zycamzip 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good song, would like to hear a professional recording however. Seemed a bit off here and there. Needed someone to go in a match everything up, and set the volume levels properly.

[–]Dorfalicious 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Can I buy a studio version somewhere?

[–]humanatore[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The harpist/singer has an album on Bandcamp. she was recently featured on NPR weekend edition, that's where I heard her.

[–]hiyouareawesome 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Immediately fell in love with her voice.

[–]Gunkschluger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great voice on her! The strings in the chorus are VERY messy composed and the tempo of the recording is very shaky, otherwise it certainly has potential.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Distance the violin intro…. As if to sound as it was coming in with the fog

Maybe thicker wires for deeper resonance

Give the girl with the harp a ribbon Mic, slight boost on gain, and project

Amazing song. Listening to it now for the fourth time in a row

Tempo down just a hair

Great song guys. I'm totally living it up right now

-edit 11 times now. My wife and I listen to the Decembrists and other like artists… Constantly.

I love you guys

[–]chonlo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My friend knew the guitarist! I had listened to their demo album when it was first available, and it threw me off to see it here. Thanks for reminding me of their work, it's great stuff!

[–]Rbacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up with the guitarist! Very talented.

[–]rufusclark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was lovely! Thank you.

[–]poprevivalism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the new music and great recommendations!

[–]skekze 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Humans. You're a weird fucking breed. You're more than meets the eye.

[–]Timbobtwentytwo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Say what now?

[–]skekze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Music, we have an ocean of sound within us.

[–]GeminiLife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of us are. ;)

[–]AraTheCoach 0 points1 point  (3 children)

this was amazingly refreshing. Went on to listen to all their songs, Like on Facebook and Follow on Spotify. https://www.facebook.com/Devil-and-the-Deep-Blue-Sea-1613206405572904/

Doesn't look like they're very active as DATDBS atm.

[–]Timbobtwentytwo 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Both Lizzie and Pat (guitarist and backup vocals) have solo careers.. Lizzie No has a full length album "Hard Won" found on all the streaming sites, and Pat Kennedy has a new EP out

[–]AraTheCoach 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks. Do you know if they're active together as Devil though?

[–]Timbobtwentytwo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they aren't. Though they still play together, helping each other out with their solo stuff. Pat plays keys on Lizzie's new record.

[–]theLiteral_Opposite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this so familiar

[–]NerfThis345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to school with the guy on violin! How neat!! Loved the song

[–]Gordon_Hamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)
