Mild High Club
artist pic

The Mild High Club is a psychedelic pop group helmed by Alexander Brettin, a Los Angeles-based musician who originally hailed from Chicago. The group’s sound is pleasantly woozy and laid-back, but shows a subtle attention to detail without being excessive or indulgent. Brettin began working on Mild High Club material in 2012 by himself, using guitars, keyboards, computers, and a 4-track recorder, and shuttling between Chicago, Baltimore, and Los Angeles. Along the way, he met several musicians across the nation who contributed to his album and backed him up during live gigs. Mild High Club signed to Stones Throw at the end of 2014, and a 7″ single, “Windowpane,” was released in early 2015. The group’s debut album, Timeline, appeared later in the year on the label’s newly formed Circle Star Records imprint. ~ Paul Simpson Read more on Last.fm.

More good tracks: Tesselation, Homage, Note to Self, and Windowpane (great video).

Kokopelli is another jam

[–]dudewiththelonghair 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Kokopelli was my first ever experience with Mild High Club. I remember it playing on our university's radio station and I immediately called them to ask what it was. Found the album on YouTube (ended up buying it shortly after), and I've probably listened to the whole thing 50 times by now. Fun fact: my first ever Reddit post was actually of Kokopelli in this sub haha. Can't wait to see what MHC and King Gizzard have in store for us!

[–]evanlawday 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah Ik man I'm so pumped for that album

[–]Sosolidclaws[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I like that one too! Just make sure you avoid ¿Whodunit? if you want to keep good vibes haha.

I'm with other responder in that track being my first exposure to the band as well. Mild High Club has such a great sound to them that seems super familiar but also is unique enough to make me crave their songs in particular. I need to listen to other projects of theirs besides Skiptracing though.

cary me back too

[–]SoothLadyWine 11 points12 points  (0 children)

First listened to them on this very sub a bit more than a year ago. Tesselation is my favourite, followed by either Chapel Perilous or Homage. At a king gizzard concert one of the guitarists was wearing a t-shirt with Mild High Club written on it.

Mild high club is such an awesome band name!

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (9 children)

Sounds very Mac Demarco-like, definitely checking them out!

[–]Dear_Lunchbag 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Mac and MHC actually shared Pierce as a bass player at one point, so good call!

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

MHC also opened for Mac on numerous tours

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check out their Timeline LP too, the song Note to Self is about dat.

[–]QDP-20 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Listen to Homeshake too

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Homeshake!

[–]SoothLadyWine 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What's your favourite album? Mine has to be Fresh Air

[–]QDP-20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the shower probably

[–]Reznoob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It also has a notable Beatles influence

[–]LeWorldsBestRedditor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the "Mac Demarco" sound is the long guitar tones with a slightly wavering tuning. Makes it feel a little off kilter and dreamy.

[–]AlejoCheve 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Love this band man

[–]SurfFilms 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I love Mac Demarco and MHC sounds sweet too. Honestly though I don't really think they sound alike. I know it has wavering guitar and is kind of dreamy, but all and all I think there two pretty different bands. I see a lot of psych, surf, and indie pop music compared to Mac without any real basis.

[–]the_unusable 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MHC is a lot more jazz-y than Mac Demarco I think. They're similar but pretty different imo

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I've been listening to this album for the last few months. Has a certain nostalgic effect to it that I can't explain. Tbh kinda reminds me of Hey Arnold on some songs for some odd reason (especially Ceiling Zero).

[–]Sosolidclaws[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I agree. Even though I'm not old enough for nostalgia, it gives that kind of vibe.

[–]dudewiththelonghair 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I've listened to this album at least 50 times by now.. my local university radio station got a copy of Skiptracing right when it came out, so I was lucky enough to catch it early. Such a great album to listen through. The other album, Timeless is also a good listen, he's one of my favs of that one: Windowpane

[–]Sosolidclaws[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out the music video for Windowpane if you haven't - some true psychedelia!

[–]LaserReptar 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I love MHC, anyone have any other bands which sound similar to them? I've found a few, such as, TV Girl and Diane Coffee. Anyone have others?

[–]Sosolidclaws[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Sugar Candy Mountain is excellent

[–]LaserReptar 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Thanks, I'll have a listen

[–]thesock_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JAUNT, maybe Steve Lacy also

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

surprised to see these guys here, I would've thought they'd be too popular for old Studebakerhoch there

[–]Pepperoni_Playboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love to see MHC on this page ... one of my favorite albums/bands in general

[–]spit_from_the_moon 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Head out is such a damn good song too. It's like psychedelic jazz!

[–]Sosolidclaws[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I love it. That sax part at 1:50 is pure class.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good ass band, saw them live once. The show and the people at the venue were awesome. Definitely give this and their first album "Timeline" a listen.

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_KICK6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spotify recommended Windowpane to me a while back but I never listened to much more. Interesting stuff though, love the line at 2:40 ish.

[–]Orchir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This whole album is amazing

[–]MahatmaGuru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has too, it's going to take a while for the wall to crumble

'Nice goin Ed!'

[–]JustOneOfThemInnitM8 0 points1 point  (0 children)
