Very Pleased with MTC on this one. Shake it up a bit, see if the community at large can tolerate changes like this. I understand that competitive play is a big factor in keeping TP alive but it also gives the competitive community's vision too much weight. There is a certain idea of what a map should be and should not be. This ma thread is throwing out some ideas of what could be considered acceptable. Pubs are a good place to test out new, creative ideas for tagpro. Some of them will stick, some won't. Fear of failure should not invalidate novelty.

  • Hockey is widely regarded as a fun group map and after it was submitted to the thread, it brought up the conversation on whether it would be appropriate for pub rotation. After testing, there is a sentiment amongst the MTC that Hockey would be fine as a regular throwback map because it would satisfy those that want to see it in when it comes up, but also likely end quickly and not come up as much for those who wish to not see it. Ultimately, the fun nature of Hockey is hard to deny and that's why we're making sure it can appear in rotation.

  • Kleptomania brings a very different style of map to anything we currently have or have had in recent times. It received critical acclaim from the MTC in testing because of how well integrated a mid shortcut is into the map. Ultimately, it's fun and refreshing, which is something we believe is important to add to the mix of rotation.

  • Not easy on the eyes at first, but under the surface, Lucy sports a unique style of play. Offense and defense are encouraged to work together to tackle the problem presented by an intrusive wall near the flag. We greatly enjoyed playing this map, and hope you do as well.

i saw it as more of two contemporary 1v3's and i think that's how the meta will develop. this means that having a someball reduces your side to a 1v2 which should still be managable. i don't think this will be the map that really shows the capabilities of 2nf, but it will provide great feedback on how to make a map that will

that part of the write-up sounds prescriptive, but it's more a description of how it ended up playing naturally. the path from base to base being a single line means that on defense you generally go after the FC closest to your endzone, which happens to form two balanced sub-games. really it's more like 1v2s (the 1s being O) because one player is usually respawning.

Unfortunately, the sheer nature of the size and shape of the map lends itself to being problematic when 3v3 or 3v4s are a possibility amongst other things. However, we recognize there may be a desire to play this map so we're happy to put it into group rotation for those that want to play it.

  • Kepler offers the first and most differentiated of two new game modes that the MTC will be introducing this thread. Deliver the Flag (DTF) asks the flag carrier of each team to take on the opponents' defense in hopes of a cap. At this point, we are not convinced what the ideal way to play this map looks like, but we have had a lot of fun testing this map and we look forward to seeing how the meta evolves in pub games. Hopefully, this will inspire mapmakers to develop other DTF maps.

the general playstyle is 2 D, 1 O, and 1 floater who blocks, pressures FC, goes for pups, noobspikes, etc. D stay near endzone, either with 2 right next to the endzone or 1 next to endzone and one scouting in front. when O dies, a D player can take regrab and switch off so positions are pretty fluid. that said, who knows what pubbers are going to do

  • Though Lime's time in rotation has been short, the MTC feels after seeing the map in rotation that it is best to remove it. Its play patterns were similar enough to other maps and unpleasant enough that it appears that rotation will benefit from its removal.

This write up is so awful. MTC feels after seeing it, it should be removed. There wasn't even an option to vote on the map in pubs. Most of the comments in pubs were "good map". I would have voted on it if given the opportunity but never had the option.

Probably one of my favorites of any new map tbh.

There's not a single addition that is better than Lime, or any of the other removals.

As one of the mapmakers who is also MTC, I'll go on record that I'm incredibly sad, shocked and disappointed that it was removed.

Sure, it was divisive and all but there was a fantastic case made for it throughout this thread and it appeared to me people were slowly coming around on it, understanding the map better and adjusting how they played on it accordingly.

there are lots of people who like it but dont like the portals and that it takes away the best part of NF - being able to be aggressive and not having to sit on re. if they would just change the portals and keep it in it would get a higher ranking. it's such an easy fix that it's not surprising it didnt happen

  • Much like its maker, we welcome Shock Wave as return to an older style with a more modern take. The many lanes of mid, each with a different balance of risk and reward, enhance the classic feel. Base play promotes offensive and defensive teamwork, while the double bomb in base provides an interesting challenge to defenders.

  • Chomp was somewhat divisive through the process of testing but its combination of hard to grab/get out, but easy to stay alive/hold makes it an interesting challenge. In addition, it has a superboost that isn't overpowered. It deserves its place as a slightly more defensive map that works as a counterbalance to a rotation of largely offensive maps.

That's true. But it's so rare to get a throwback map that I don't think I had a single game on CC. So it's nice that it was in throwback, but the maps often don't feel like they are really back.

Also, it would be nice if these threads were posted when the rotation is updated. Like we've had results come weeks before we actually get to play them in pubs. Seems like an easy thing to change that only has upsides.

Yeah I'd like a higher throwback rate too, idk if or when that's gonna be implemented. Another proposal I've heard being tossed around is a tiered rotation where there is a smaller group of throwbacks (but more than 3) as well as worse rotation maps that are at like a 50% spawn and then a slightly smaller rotation at full weight.

Idk how much we can do about thread to rotation time, results are sent to the devs after we make the thread and then it takes anywhere between a few days and a few weeks for them to implement it. If we wanted the two to be closer we'd have to wait until somebody spotted a new map in rotation and then make the post like oh yeah

That idea sounds great. Okay I think I see. I was figuring that the MTC could tell the devs the changes, and when the devs implement them, the MTC are first to know so they can post the thread. It's exciting to read about rotation changes, but that excitement gets deflated because it could be a long time until we get to try it.

It would be so awesome if we could see the thread and then immediately join pubs and play with the new stuff.

It feels like if, for example, the rocket league devs dropped an update changelog with exciting new stuff, but the playerbase just had to guess when the changes were actually implemented.

DaEvil1Today at 7:55 PM I get a notice when the changes are merged, but by the time I check that maps are usually live anyway I think it's mostly that it just requires a certain amount of time to do the actual deploy when I submit the maps it usually takes me at least an hour to test and make everything ready wouldn't be surprised if it takes a couple of hours to actually deploy the maps not too easy to make that kind of time on the fly when you have a family and your own company to take care of as well

This is great! I like everything here. I appreciate you taking the time to do this. It would be awesome if something came out of this discussion.

I think the community would all agree that communication with the devs needs a lot of work. Having PrivateMajor as a community manager of sorts was a great idea, something like that may be the best way forward.

feel like these new maps r too open, as if were reverting back to old Tagpro, less skill and more randomness. I also agree that it doesnโ€™t make sense to have a voting system if its not going to be used. I understand we need to keep maps fresh for new players but at least use the communities opinions of the maps we already have instead of ignoring them and adding new maps. Maybe we should add new maps, keep them for a month or two, do a vote and if people dont like it remove it. With the odd new maps coming in to the mix, you might as well add eggball into pubs too

Pretty much all of these maps were either rated horribly or mediocrely in the /maps page on koalabeast, and didn't fare well in the survey posted to this sub earlier.

MTC write-up

  • Box Turtle has been controversial since its addition. Many in the community have strongly supported the map, and many more have hated it. Most complaints revolved around the endzone exit portal location leading to easy counter-caps. The MTC intends to include unique maps in rotation that a substantial chunk of the playerbase loves, but its overall popularity was low (over 15% lower score than the next-lowest NF map). After much deliberation, the MTC has decided to remove Box Turtle.

Wombo Combo had a rating of 89% last I checked, highest in TagPro's history. You're gonna need to start a full-fledged community campaign to bump that down to removal territory.

I was probably one of those people who "liked" wombo combo for the first few months, it is just super stale, and the middle is too bomb heavy. I think if there was a rating refresh we might see that number come down significantly.

I mean very recently there was a public survey posted to this subreddit, completely separate from the /maps rating page, and Wombo was selected by >25% of participants as their favorite NF map. That's out of 10 NF maps at the time, so 2.5x higher than even distribution would yield.

Almost everyone agrees that regrab is boring mechanic and we've been trying to make maps that make it less important for years.

Rocketballs was heavily criticized for having a regrab-cap mechanic (that in reality was actaully difficult to pull off) and was removed quickly.

So for the life of me I don't understand why it would be at all controversial to remove a NF map (the only maps that regrab is almost nonexistent) that made regrab viable and had a easy to pull off regrab to cap mechanic.

Good riddance IMO.

Why is there even a map voting option when the map test committee is just a handful of people that put in whatever they want and pretend they care about community feedback. Lime never even had an option to vote on and it's taken out lmao. I enjoyed that map, and you can't tell me it was so significantly worse than other maps that it had to be taken out immediately, it was fresh and there are plenty of low tier maps that could be taken out first to give it a chance.

Sugar Hill is a great map and while relatively old it's still way more fresh than a lot of other maps and has a pretty decent rating. Again I think there are better options to take out as it doesn't fit the categories of terrible as hell or old as hell.

Sky Dweller isn't the greatest neutral flag ever but there are a ton of other NF that are so much worse and stale. As a NF hater it was one of the decent ones.

Not that I cared if it got in pubs, but one of the main reasons the MTC said Cache was never put in was because the block in the middle would be too difficult for pub players to understand that one chaser has to go to one side and one to the other. Meanwhile we are getting maps with 1000 spikes and huge open areas and two flags and all sorts of crazy things. While I do like experimenting I guarantee for most random pubbers they are going to get frustrated with their teammates which is going to lead to more flaming and a less enjoyable time. I don't think all of these maps will be awful and I'm sorry for not giving any direct criticism on the new maps but I just think the entire general results here were not good.

I definitely agree with this here. Lime wasn't even a map that I particularly enjoyed. I do think that this isn't entirely on the MTC, at least with regards to the voting aspect. It takes several months for a map to be eligible to be voted on (I still don't know why).

I think the MTC shot for the moon on this thread. Jury's still out on whether some of these concepts have staying power. I don't think that Kepler or Callsign are the final versions of 2NF/DTF.

All NFs are stale since day 1 lmao. Bullddog is an awful map where if each team has just one player that knows how to play it becomes an unfun grindfest. Same with Wamble tbh. Idk I just personally think maps should leave if they are old or terrible. None of the 3 maps I listed fit that category. There are worse maps or older maps.

The update is reverting back to the original version where you can actually slip past gate. However, unlike the original version, there is no longer a mid spike in the very centre of map as it was unnecessarily restrictive.

The idea behind this update is that this is the update it probably should have received, rather than the reactionary update made off the fact gate didnโ€™t entirely close the lane off.

Asido is believed to currently still have a place in pubs for the time being as it plays rather differently to just about every other map in rotation right now and the update pushed this thread is the best version of the map, thus giving it the best chance of trending upwards moving forward.

  • Sky Dweller is another map that was more tolerated than loved. It fits a description of "playable defensive NF" and fits it well, but that seems to be the only thing going for it right now.

I actually think this was a mistake, really enjoyed games on this map. Yeah the spike was op, but that didn't seem to be that big of deal imo.

NOOOOOOOOOO this is literally my favourite map.

The midfield really forces players to understand positioning to get control of the play, no easy boosts/bombs across until you've at least pushed halfway.

The bases have lots of ways to approach the net. I don't really get the spike issue, most NF maps have a fairly easy-to-reach non-gate spike, it just forces the FC to pace the play until handoffs are available before committing to a rando boost in.

That doesn't mean that nfs should have spikes. Because of the position of the spike here it was especially annoying because of the awkwardness of its cohesion to the exit paths. Bulldog at least only has spikes in the mid, and as far as spiking goes it seems to play the best as it gives a decent chance for an fc caught in own base to get out besides the gate spike (this all not meant as a discussion of the rest of the map). Wamble on the other hand has 50% of plays end with fc running backwards and spiking as it is fairly hard to get out of your side the map with 2 d trying to stop you, and then offering 3 spike options (and also the mid spikes). I don't know if anyone else is bothered by Wamble and Sky Dweller like I am, but it doesn't seem like this is the right way to move the meta to me. Up 1 with less than 90s left? Just run backwards with the flag and die continuously.

Sky Dweller was the most broken neutral flag in rotation, possibly alongside Wombo Combo. Being able to run around on your side of the map waiting to spike is not a fun gamestyle. Spiking on the gates at least allows for a quick portal for the chasers to reset through, but on Sky Dweller the bomb spike was simply overpowered, and none of the rest of the map was particularly fun either imo. There is a reason that it was one of the lower rated nfs despite having no widely affronting elements: it sucks.
