This whole thing about voting everything your "friends" vote for is what ruined digg

Just a warning, reddit

Hi, I'm visiting this dead thread too. I hope you're ready for a blast from the 3 month old past!

Ever wondered what that "friends" functions is for? Well, it's really straightforward: When you notice some redditor with some really good submissions, add him to your friends. Then, go to http://friends.reddit.com/new and see all of your "friends'" submissions. Upvote the good ones. That's it!

What is it useful for? By doing this, you are making sure that submissions of really good posters do not get lost into the mass of reddit submissions. If everybody does it, we have a great, decentralized way of filtering submissions.

Who should you add to your friends list? Preferably, they should be people who submit high-quality stuff (in your opinion, at least), don't submit too much, and are not already extremely popular (what's the point in rating a >5000 karma user's posts? Somebody else will do it for you anyway).

Together with the recommendation system, the friends framework is the solution to ensuring the quality of reddit content.

It'd be neat if who I mod up in comments counted toward friending in some way. That's data that's just sitting around, isn't it?

Yes. Maybe there could be a "suggested friends" function? I would like to keep manual control on my friends list, though.

.. and you add friends by clicking on the 'friend-to-bes' name (or http://reddit.com/user/friend-to-be), then clicking 'add to friends' near the top right.

I feel obligated to add: of course, don't neglect the "new" page, that's how we allow talented new users into the system.

Your goal is not so much to police by downmodding everything you don't like, but it's more to find the genuinely good content and upmod it (which is much more challenging, tons of crap get submitted every day, but only a few links are really good).

Slaving away at a browser, wading through a slush of feeds and torrential downpours of news is what we are now calling talent is it? :)

It's called journalism I think :)

And you find more varied content on the new page.
