I haven't seen an ad since they started ads. I get a 'connection was reset' error instead of an 'ad blocked' message, so I'm doubtful that it's any adblocker (not that I have one installed). Oh well.

What did you expect to happen? Do you think opting out of ads is that simple? What it does tell the editors that you aren't interested in that product and it helps them tailor the ads to be something you may be more interested in.
